Histopathological findings of X-linked retinoschisis with neovascular glaucoma.

BACKGROUND: X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS) is rarely complicated by neovascular glaucoma. Only a few reports of XLRS histopathological findings with neovascular glaucoma have been published. METHODS: A 41-year-old man with XLRS complicated by neovascular glaucoma in his left eye was examined with electroretinography, B-scan, ultrasound biomicroscopy and computed tomography. He was examined by ophthalmoscopy and fluorescein angiography in the other eye. An enucleation was performed in his left eye due to uncontrollable high intraocular pressure and persistent ocular pain. We examined the enucle…

Familial foveal retinoschisis associated with a rod-cone dystrophy.

A brother and sister born of a consanguinous marriage had bilateral foveal retinoschisis and a generalized rod-cone dysfunction. This was associated with nyctalopia, hyperopia, minimal vitreous opacities in the sister, a paramacular tapetal sheen reflex, normal retinal vessels, an abnormal electroretinogram, and a normal electro-oculogram in the less affected brother. Foveal retinoschisis is not pathognomonic for x-chromosome-linked juvenile retinoschisis. It may be seen as a manifestation of a macular dystrophy or associated with a generalized tapetoretinal dystrophy.

Profound Effect of Light on Cysts in X-Linked Retinoschisis.

PURPOSE: X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS), caused by RS1 pathogenic variants, leads to macular dystrophy. Patients with XLRS show diurnal changes in optical coherence tomography (OCT), with more schisis in the morning. We studied diurnal variation in Rs1-knockout (KO) mice retinal structure and electrical function. METHODS: Rs1-KO mice 2.5 to 4 months old (MO) had electroretinogram (ERG), OCT, and intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements collected at 5 AM and 5 PM on different days and under different experimental conditions. Mice were maintained under standard 12-hour light/dark cycle, reversed …

The Progression of Peripapillary Retinoschisis May Indicate the Progression of Glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To identify the temporal correlation between the increase in peripapillary retinoschisis (PPRS) and glaucoma progression during PPRS fluctuation. METHODS: We performed a comparative clinical timeline analysis for PPRS and glaucomatous progression in eyes with PPRS. In particular, the interval between the increase in PPRS extent and glaucoma progression was analyzed. Temporal correlation was defined when the interval was less than one year between glaucoma progression and PPRS increase, including both de novo development and an increase in the amount of retinoschisis on serial optical…

A case of X-linked retinoschisis with atypical fundus appearance.

PURPOSE: Mutations in the RS1 gene are known to cause retinoschisis, an X-linked hereditary retinal degeneration. Here, we present a case of atypical retinoschisis with clinical findings of retinoschisis and retinitis pigmentosa. METHODS: This report is an observational case report. The detailed ophthalmological examinations included visual field determination, multimodal imaging and electrophysiological recordings. Targeted next-generation sequencing of a retinal disease gene panel was performed. RESULTS: The 55-year-old male, highly hyperopic patient, presented with a best-corrected Snelle…

X-linked retinoschisis with point mutations in the XLRS1 gene.

BACKGROUND: X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS) is a relatively rare vitreoretinal dystrophy that causes visual loss in young men. Recently, a gene responsible for this disease, designated XLRS1, was identified, and several deleterious gene mutations were reported. OBJECTIVE: To analyze Japanese patients clinically diagnosed as having XLRS formutational changes in the XLRS1 gene. METHODS: Ten patients with XLRS underwent full ophthalmologic examination, including slitlamp biomicroscopy and dilated funduscopy. Genomic DNA was isolated from leukocytes, and all exons of the XLRS1 gene were amplified …

The role of inner wall retinectomy in the management of juvenile retinoschisis.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to describe the technique and application of relief of vitreous traction and inner wall retinectomy in the management of juvenile retinoschisis (JRS). In addition, during the course of this study a previously undescribed form of tractional retinal detachment associated with retinal schisis was observed. METHODS: Six eyes of four children with visual field and/or central vision loss underwent vitrectomy (in five of the six eyes the lenses were preserved), inner wall retinectomy and photocoagulation for rhegmatogenous/schisis retinal detachment, tractional …

Genotypic and phenotypic spectrum of X-linked retinoschisis in Australia.

BACKGROUND: X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS), an X-linked recessive inherited degenerative retinopathy, is characterized by splitting in the nerve fibre layer and is caused by alterations in the RS1 gene. The aim of the present study was to review both the phenotypic features of XLRS and the mutation spectrum of the RS1 gene in an Australian cohort. METHODS: Patients were recruited from ophthalmic and paediatric hospitals as well as private ophthalmic clinics across Australia. A cohort of 18 presumably unrelated families was identified. Twenty-two affected patients underwent clinical examination…

Degenerative peripheral retinoschisis simulating occlusive retinal vasculitis in intermediate uveitis.

Retinoschisis, the horizontal splitting of retinal layers, is classified into four types: hereditary (juvenile or X-linked), degenerative (senile, which is more frequently encountered in clinical practice, or acquired), tractional (associated with vitreoretinal interface abnormalities) and exudative (linked to an optic disc pit).Acquired retinoschisis is reported in intermediate uveitis and is hypothesised to result from chronic vascular leakage and subclinical retinal ischaemia, although evidence remains limited.A senior female patient was referred to the uveitis service for management of sus…

Peripheral Degenerative Retinoschisis: Imaging Evidence for Two Distinct Structural Configurations.

PURPOSE: To characterize vitreoretinal architecture in peripheral degenerative retinoschisis using high-resolution swept-source optical coherence tomography and to distinguish two morphologically and potentially mechanistically distinct forms of retinoschisis. METHODS: This retrospective imaging study evaluated eyes with peripheral degenerative retinoschisis using swept-source optical coherence tomography with extended dynamic-range processing and volume rendering. Retinoschisis was categorized as columnar retinoschisis, with residual intraretinal tissue columns, or bullous retinoschisis, wit…

Intraocular Pressure Lowering Associated With Worsening Optic Pit-Like Retinoschisis.

In this article, we present a case of optic pit-like macular retinoschisis in the absence of advanced glaucomatous cupping. Intraocular pressure (IOP)-lowering therapy, which was started due to an early concern for glaucoma, caused a worsening of the retinoschisis, which subsequently resolved on discontinuation of the IOP-lowering therapy. Lower IOP likely triggered intraretinal fluid accumulation by facilitating a translaminar gradient from the subarachnoid to intraretinal space. [Ophthalmic Surg Lasers Imaging Retina 2024;55:100-102.].

Disc hemorrhage following peripapillary retinoschisis in glaucoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Disc hemorrhage (DH) is an important factor often associated with the development and especially progression of glaucoma. In contrast, some studies have reported peripapillary retinoschisis in glaucoma, but it is not recognized as a pathognomonic finding, and opinions on the clinical significance of retinoschisis are not consistent. Here,we present the case of DH following peripapillary retinoschisis in the same area within the same glaucomatous eye. CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old man with high intraocular pressure (IOP) was referred to the glaucoma clinic. At the time of the ba…
