Refractive errors in children with cerebral palsy, psychomotor retardation, and other non-cerebral palsy neuromotor disabilities.

The aim of this study was to analyse the refractive state of four different groups of children: those with spastic cerebral palsy (CP), aged between 7 and 81 months (N=50); psychomotor retardation, aged between 19 and 70 months (N=16); other neuromotor dysfunctions, aged between 12 and 75 months (N=37); and without psychomotor retardation, aged between 9 and 73 months (N=181). Refractive errors were determined using cycloplegic retinoscopy and non-cycloplegic retinoscopy (Mohindra's technique). We found higher percentages of hyperopia, tendency toward hyperopia, and other refractive anomalies …

The tilted disk syndrome.

We noted occasional diagnostic confusion with papilledema and chiasmal compression when its true congential nature was not recognized in 12 patients with a benign ocular syndrome. Retinoscopy, fluorescein angiography, ocular ultrasonography, and histopathology suggested that associated visual field defects were related to a localized staphylomatous ectasia of the posterior globe.

[Investigation of the related factors between newborn history and red reflex].

The red reflex test is an important part of the newborn's ocular exam. This study investigated the relationship between red reflex in premature newborns (PN) and factors of the newborn history. It's a descriptive, exploratory, quantitative study conducted in a public maternity in Fortaleza, State of Ceará, with 114 PN between the months of April and May of 2004. For data registration was used a questionnaire, and for the ocular exam a direct ophthalmoscope. Data showed the following findings: 68% of PN had an Apgar under seven during the first minute; 112 were submitted to oxygen therapy; and

Development of spherical equivalent refraction in prematurely born children during the first 10 years of life: a population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the development of refraction, expressed as spherical equivalents, in prematurely born children during the first 10 years of life. METHODS: Retinoscopy in cycloplegia was performed at 6 months, 2.5 years, and 10 years of age in 198 prematurely born children from a previous population-based study on the incidence of retinopathy of prematurity. Spherical equivalents were calculated. Myopia was defined as a spherical equivalent of less than 0 diopters (D), clinically significant myopia at 10 years of age as -1 D or less, and moderate or high myopia as less than -3D. Hyperm…

Aphakic correction in ectopia lentis.

Ectopia lentis may cause a reduction in visual acuity, which varies with the type and degree of dislocation and the presence of other ocular abnormalities. Retinoscopy may reveal a significant refractive error, usually myopia and astigmatism. Occasionally, an accurate refraction may be difficult because of tilting or dislocation of the lens. If aphakic refraction improves visual acuity, an aphakic correction should be considered.

[Prescription of weak corrective lenses (author's transl)].

Ophthalmological examinations of patients with asthenopic complaints should include measurement of fusion in addition to retinoscopy under cycloplegia and testing for heterophoria. If fusion is poor in the absence of heterophoria it is advisable to correct even small refractive errors up to 0.5 D; 63% of such patients are cured of complaints as a result and there is an improvement in almost all the others. On the other hand, only 22% of heterophoric patients are cured of their asthenopia by "weak" glasses, although 64% show an improvement.

Comparison of cyclopentolate versus tropicamide cycloplegia in children.

This double masked study compares the cycloplegic effects of tropicamide 1% and cyclopentolate 1% in 20 nonstrabismic, nonamblyopic, hyperopic 6- to 12-year-old children with a mean refractive error = +1.48 +/- 1.10 diopters (D). Unlike previous studies which used only amplitude of accommodation to measure the depth of cycloplegia, this study compares refractive error as determined by retinoscopy, distance subjective refraction, and distance autorefraction (Canon R-1). In addition, we compare the amplitude of accommodation as measured by subjective push-up and objective autorefraction methods.…

Keratometric changes after cataract extraction.

One hundred cases of uncomplicated cataract with clear corneae had cataract extraction and were examined at 20 days and six weeks after operation. Keratometry was done preoperatively and keratometry and retinoscopy at each of the follow-up visits. The study was undertaken to evaluate the type (whether pre- or postplaced) and the number of sutures (one, three, or five) that produce the least postoperative astigmatism. We found that the type of suture was immaterial but that three sutures produced the least astigmatism.

Clinical evaluation of the 6600 Autorefractor.

The 6600 Autorefractor was evaluated on 200 patients undergoing refraction. The automatic refractor showed a high degree of accuracy in determining the needed refractive correction, but the errors are sufficient that the automatic refractor alone without subjective refinement cannot be substituted for conventional complete refracting methods with subjective refinement. However, for aphakic patients and for patients with clear media and cylindric corrections over 0.50 diopters, the automatic refractor can be used as a substitute for retinoscopy in determining the starting point for a subjective…

[Research Progress in Measurement of Human Accommodative Amplitude].

Accommodation is an important function of the human eye, which can change the parameters of ocular refractive system and also has a strong correlation with the development of myopia and presbyopia. Several subjective measurements have been applied in accommodation assessment such as push-up test, push-down test and minus-lens procedures. It can be measured objectively by measuring the change in refraction of the eye with dynamic retinoscopy or autorefractor. This article reviews the application of measurement of accommodative amplitude and research progress in accommodation, providing clinical…

Prandial presbyopia.

Loss of accommodation amplitude during eating (prandial presbyopia) is a rare phenomenon that has been reported in only 1 patient who had had head trauma. We report 2 patients who had not had head trauma and whose accommodative amplitudes, measured by dynamic retinoscopy, became markedly diminished within 1 minute of starting a meal and did not recover for 55-60 minutes. Apart from this abnormality, there appeared to be no autonomic or other neurologic dysfunction. The cause of this isolated disturbance in these patients is a mystery.
