The Asymmetric Spillover Effects of Retirement on Disability: Evidence From China.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Recent research has explored the spillover effects of retirement on spousal well-being, yet limited attention has been given to the short-term impact on spousal disability. This study explored the asymmetric spillover impact of retirement on spouses' disability severity among a national cohort of urban residents in China. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Utilizing 4 waves of data (2011-2018) from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey, we employ a nonparametric regression discontinuity design to estimate the short-term effect of retirement on spousal disabi…

Incarceration's lingering health effects on Black men: impacts persist into retirement.

BACKGROUND: The unique challenges Black men face within the criminal justice system underscore structural and systemic factors driving widespread inequalities. The long-term effects of these challenges on economic, health, and social outcomes as individuals transition to retirement remain poorly understood, highlighting a critical gap in our knowledge of life trajectories long after justice system involvement. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the enduring health impacts of incarceration on Black men, particularly focusing on the transition into retirement. It aimed to explore the influence…

Retirement Age Ranges from Clinical Practice of Maternal-Fetal Medicine Physicians.

Objectives Retirement of "baby boomer" physicians is a matter of growing concern in light of the shortage of certain physician groups. The objectives of this investigation were to define what constitutes a customary retirement age range of maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) physicians and examine how that compares with other obstetrician-gynecologist (ob-gyn) specialists. Study Design This descriptive study was based on American Medical Association Masterfile survey data from 2010 to 2014. Data from the National Provider Identifier were used to correct for upward bias in reporting retirement ages. …

[Aldosterone receptor antagonists in heart failure. Rightly brought back from retirement].

There is growing evidence that aldosterone plays an important role in the development of endorgan-damage e.g. vascular and cardiac fibrosis, remodeling and endothelial dysfunction. Aldosterone-antagonism has become a novel therapeutic principle beyond its sodium retention properties in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. In patients with severe left ventricular dysfunction spironolactone could reduce death and hospitalisation. A new selective aldosterone antagonist, eplerenone, was effective in patients with left ventricular dysfunction after myocardial infarction added to optimal medica

[Causes of early retirement of workers chronically exposed to carbon disulfide].

A comparative study was carried out between the divisions of one of the viscose industry plants where workers carry on shift work in CS2 exposure and shift workers of a wool industry plant--in the same town--with no chemical exposure. It appeared that more of the CS2 exposed workers became disabled at a younger age and after shorter employment duration. As to the diseases resulting in the untimely job leave most frequent were stenocardia, accidents and tumours; on the other hand no such observations referred to diabetes mellitus and obliterative inflammation of lower extremities arteries. Chro

Ageing on the job: How raising retirement age affects work accidents.

As populations age, many countries have increased the statutory retirement age to sustain pension systems and maintain labor supply. This article examines whether delayed retirement increases workplace accident risks, a potentially important but underexplored cost of pension reforms. We exploit the 2012 Italian pension reform - which sharply tightened eligibility requirements and abruptly raised the retirement age - to estimate its causal effects using administrative data on private-sector employees. Leveraging firm-level variation in exposure to the reform, we identify the impact of delayed r…

Physical Fitness Index for Older Adults in a Chinese Retirement Community.

BACKGROUND: Physical fitness is important for health and independence in older adults, but existing systems do not always provide a continuous multidomain score. OBJECTIVE: To develop and preliminarily evaluate a Physical Fitness Index (PFI) for older adults in a Chinese retirement community. METHODS: A total of 561 participants aged 65-89 years completed assessments of body composition, strength, endurance, balance, mobility, and flexibility. Scores were normalized within sex and 5-year age groups and combined using a fixed radar-axis order. RESULTS: The PFI averaged 39.24 ± 13.43 points (…

Putting it off: family breast cancer history and women's retirement planning.

OBJECTIVE: Cancer diagnoses have significant consequences that extend beyond the individual to family members. Our research builds on prior research by examining how a family history of breast cancer is related to women's retirement preparations. METHODS: Taking guidance from the stress process model, we generate and test hypotheses using multivariate logistic regression and unique data on retirement planning and familial cancer histories for 467 women. We supplement this analysis with the qualitative findings from two focus groups. RESULTS: We find consistent evidence that women with a moth…

Dental practitioners and ill health retirement: causes, outcomes and re-employment.

AIM: The aim of this project was, by means of a questionnaire to ill health retirees, to determine the factors which have contributed to the premature retirement of general dental practitioners (GDPs) due to ill health. METHODS: A questionnaire was designed to determine the effects of illness and ill health retirement (IHR) on the lives of those dentists who were affected. This was distributed to 207 dentists who were known to have retired because of ill health but were not suffering from serious, debilitating or life-threatening illnesses. RESULTS: A total of 189 questionnaires were returne…

Skeletal benefits after long-term retirement in former elite female gymnasts.

Bone strength benefits after long-term retirement from elite gymnastics in terms of bone geometry and volumetric BMD were studied by comparing retired female gymnasts to moderately active age-matched women. In a cross-sectional study, 30 retired female gymnasts were compared with 30 age-matched moderately active controls. Bone geometric and densitometric parameters were measured by pQCT at the distal epiphyses and shafts of the tibia, femur, radius, and humerus. Muscle cross-sectional areas were assessed from the shaft scans. Independent t-tests were conducted on bone and muscle variables to d…

Lifetime achievement patterns, retirement and life satisfaction of gifted aged women.

The relationship of lifetime achievement patterns and retirement to life satisfaction for gifted aging women was investigated. Participants were 352 women in Terman's study of the gifted who were surveyed in 1977 at a mean age of 66. Lifetime achievement pattern was defined by either homemaker, job, or career work history. Dependent variables included health, happiness, life satisfaction, work attitudes, ambitions and aspirations, and participation in leisure activities. Results showed variations on life satisfaction measures as a function of lifetime career, with job holders generally less sa…

Fifty years later: the "rule of Spence" is finally ready for retirement.

Determination of the optimal approach to traumatic atlas fractures with or without transverse atlantal ligament (TAL) injury requires a nuanced understanding of the biomechanics of the atlantoaxial complex. The "rule of Spence" (ROS) was created in 1970 in a landmark effort to streamline management of burst-type atlas fractures. The ROS states that radiographic evidence of lateral mass displacement (LMD) (i.e., the distance that the C1 lateral masses extend beyond the C2 superior articular processes) greater than 6.9 mm may indicate both a torn TAL and need for surgical management. Since then,

Neuropsychological functioning in ageing retired NFL players: a critical review.

Recent discovery of chronic traumatic encephalopathy in former National Football League (NFL) players has led to a surge of papers investigating cognitive functioning in these former athletes. This critical review of the literature focused on the neuropsychological functioning in these ageing athletes, and included 22 articles published between 2013 and 2019, of which 13 reported on neuroradiological imaging and four focused on dose-response relationships of repetitive head injury on cognitive outcomes. Four studies suggest higher prevalence of MCI and neurodegenerative disease among NFL retir

Late onset of Strongyloides stercoralis meningitis in a retired Belgian miner.

We report a rare case of Strongyloides stercoralis meningitis in an immunocompromised patient treated for a lung carcinoma. Despite his Belgian origin, he was infected with S. stercoralis due to his former work as a miner. Although mostly prevalent in (sub)tropical areas, there are temperate regions where this nematode can occur.

Concussion Frequency Associates with Musculoskeletal Injury in Retired NFL Players.

OBJECTIVE: Concussion is commonly associated with immediate and persistent alterations in motor function affecting postural control and gait. Patients with lower extremity joint injury have demonstrated functional alterations in the cerebral cortex, suggesting that musculoskeletal injury may be linked to alterations in brain function. Therefore, we examined the associations between concussion frequency and lower extremity musculoskeletal injury sustained during professional careers of National Football League (NFL) players in a cross-sectional study. METHODS: An inclusive health history surve

In vivo measurements of lead in fingerbone in active and retired lead smelters.

OBJECT: The aim of this study was to determine the bone lead concentration in lead smelters and reference subjects, relate them to the lead concentration in blood (B-Pb) and urine (U-Pb), and to use the measured bone lead to calculate a biological half-life for lead in bone. METHOD AND DESIGN: The lead concentration in the second phalanx of the left index finger (bone-Pb) was determined in vivo using an X-ray fluorescence technique. The study population comprised 89 smelters with a history of long-term exposure to lead (71 active and 18 retired) and 35 reference subjects (27 active and 8 reti
