A 66-year-old woman who had been treated at a nearby hospital since 1977 for rheumatoid arthritis complained of cough. Chest X-ray films disclosed multiple nodular shadows with cavitation in the fields of both lungs. The patient was admitted to our hospital and a thoracoscopic lung biopsy was performed. Histologically, the nodule consisted of necrotizing granuloma, indicating a necrobiotic nodule. Rheumatoid nodule was diagnosed because the patient exhibited rheumatoid arthritis. The chest X-ray shadow disappeared without medication. Rheumatoid nodules without coniosis are uncommon, but should…

Rheumatoid nodules are not uncommon in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Two patients with rheumatoid arthritis and rheumatoid nodules are described. The MRI characteristics and enhancement patterns of five nodules are examined.

Rheumatic nodules occur in some 20 to 25% of cases of chronic polyarthritis, and need special diagnostic, in particular differential diagnostic, consideration. They have to be differentiated from numerous other nodules in rheumatoid and non-rheumatoid diseases. To achieve this, palpation, a knowledge of the preferred sites, and the use of such technical means as laboratory and x-ray investigations are all useful.

Nodules obtained from five patients with classical seropositive rheumatoid arthritis were studied by an immunofluorescence technique using polyclonal antibodies to IgG, IgA, IgM, C3c, and fibrin, and monoclonal antibodies to the terminal (C5b-9) complement complex (reaction with a neoantigen in C9 revealed during activation), DR antigens, T cells, macrophages, and interdigitating cells. In all instances the central necrotic areas stained strongly for fibrin and more weakly for IgG, IgA, IgM, C3, and terminal complement complex. The surrounding palisading cells reacted with antibodies to DR and

The regression of small rheumatoid nodules was noted in four patients after starting sulphasalazine therapy. This coincided with an improvement in synovitis and also falls in erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C reactive protein (CRP). The relation between the nodule regression and the sulphasalazine therapy is discussed.

Eighteen nodules from patients with rheumatoid disease were studied histologically and immunohistochemically. A continuum of microscopic cha … f these cells were entirely free of iron. These findings confirm the chronic inflammatory nature of rheumatoid nodules but provide no support for the view that they originate in areas of vasculitis. A relative lack of cytoplasmic antiprotease along with a strong expression of ferritin appears to be a characteristic feature of macrophages in rheumatoid tissue.

A new case of rhumatoid nodulitis is reported in à 28 year old man presenting with rapidly regressive arthralgia, numerous rhumatoid nodules and metatarsal lesions without signs of associated arthritis. The biochemical profile was non-specific; serology was weakly positive for rhumatoid factor; there was no obvious immunological disorder (no circulating immune complexes, total complement and its various fractions within normal limits). The clinical findings, treatment and classification of this condition are discussed with reference to six other published cases with a similar clinical and para

INTRODUCTION: Rheumatoid nodules are possible extra-articular manifestations of rheumatoid arthritis. These lesions are mainly located in subcutaneous tissues but may also rarely affect deep organs, exceptionally the meninges.
CASE REPORT: We report herein a case of meningeal nodules observed in a 52-year-old man with rheumatoid arthritis who underwent brain MRI to explore an acute visual impairment. Subsequent MRIs showed similar new lesions contrasting with total regression of the initially observed lesions. The final control brain MRI performed four years after the onset of the ocular symp…

The nodules associated with rheumatoid arthritis and rheumatic fever appear with other signs of active rheumatic disease. Rheumatoid nodule-like lesions irrelevant to rheumatoid disease occasionally occur in children who are well and have no complaints associated with rheumatoid diseases. Laboratory tests are normal. Children with benign rheumatoid nodule are not at increased risk for rheumatic disease. No therapy or prophylaxis is required. We present a two-year-old girl with a subcutaneous nodule on the right pretibial region who was diagnosed with clinical and histological findings.

The authors describe the appearance of rheumatoid nodules during cyclosporin A (CsA) therapy for RA. Their course was evaluated by sonography that revealed an increase in number and size of rheumatoid nodules. The relationship between CsA treatment and the onset of nodulosis is not clear and further studies are needed to assess the role of CsA treatment in the extra-articular manifestations of rheumatoid arthritis such as rheumatoid nodules.

2 cases of Rheumatoid arthritis associated with multiple subcutaneous nodules were presented, which resembled "pseudoxanthomatour rheumatoid nodules" as before reported. In the first case, the asymmetrical joint involvement has been preceded by the formation of subcutaneous nodules since 5 years; In the second case, arthritis appeared long before the nodules were formed. In both cases, circumscript vasculitis and high titer of rheumatoid factor were noticed and cystic activities were found in several nodules.
