Anaemia during pregnancy: could riboflavin deficiency be implicated?

Anaemia affects more than 36 % of all pregnancies globally and is associated with significant maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. … atological status and anaemia. Various mechanisms have been proposed to explain the contribution of riboflavin deficiency to anaemia, with the strongest evidence pointing to an adverse effect on iron metabolism, given that riboflavin co-factors are required for the release of iron from storage ferritin in the production of red blood cells. Overall, this review investig …

Peripheral neuropathy of dietary riboflavin deficiency in chickens.

A strain of rapidly growing meat-type chickens was fed a diet deficient in riboflavin from 1-40 days of age. Diminished growth rate, progressive gait abnormality and reluctance to move were noted beginning on day 8. Neurologic abnormalities were related to peripheral neuropathy characterized by Schwann cell hypertrophy and degeneration with cytoplasmic lipid droplets' and segmental demyelination. Lesions were initially detected on day 10, and in concert with clinical signs became more profound between days 14 and 21. Sequestration of myelin debris within Schwann cells was common. Embryonic death in mink due to riboflavin deficiency.

Riboflavin deficiency has been produced experimentally in mink by adding to the feed 10--20 mg galactoflavin--anti-B2 vitamin--per animal daily during the pregnancy. The experiment included 44 standard female mink (Table II). Riboflavin deficiency led to embryonic death; none of the mated females in the deficient group delivered kits. At the expected time of birth, six of the females were subjected to uterectomy or investigative laparatomy, which showed remnants of embryos that were mostly decomposed (Figs. 1 and 2). In a parallel group, four of six females on the same diet with the same doses…

Asynchrony of erythroblast maturation induced by riboflavin deficiency.

Ultrastructural studies indicate that galactoflavin-induced riboflavin deficiency induces asynchrony of rat erythroblast maturation. During the latter stages of maturation erythroblasts retain significantly larger numbers of ribosomes as compared to control cells. Nucleoli are not evident in erythroblasts whose nuclei indicate cells in the latter stages of development. Membrane whorls develop within the mitochondria of plasma cells, eosinophils and neutrophils during the fifth week of riboflavin deficiency. No further evidence of degeneration was noted among additional cell organelles.

Adaptive regulation of riboflavin transport in heart: effect of dietary riboflavin deficiency in cardiovascular pathogenesis.

Deficiency or defective transport of riboflavin (RF) is known to cause neurological disorders, cataract, cardiovascular anomalies, and various cancers by altering the biochemical pathways. Mechanisms and regulation of RF uptake process is well characterized in the cells of intestine, liver, kidney, and brain origin, while very little is known in the heart. Hence, we aimed to understand the expression and regulation of RF transporters (rRFVT-1 and rRFVT-2) in cardiomyocytes during RF deficiency and also investigated the role of RF in ischemic cardiomyopathy and mitochondrial dysfunction in vivo

Effect of riboflavin or pyridoxine deficiency on inflammatory response.

Inflammatory response has been assessed in riboflavin or pyridoxine deficient rats. Edema was increased by 54% in pyridoxine deficiency as compared to weight-matched control rats. Food restriction per se reduced the volume of edema by 63%. In pyridoxine deficiency, concentrations of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (which indicate the extent of lipid peroxidation) increase by 30 and 43% respectively in the edematous tissues of the paw as well as in the wounded skin. Both these parameters were not affected by riboflavin deficiency. Activities of NADPH oxidase and superoxide dismutase in …

Occurrence and significance of riboflavin deficiency in preterm infants.

Few studies have explored the importance of riboflavin deficiency in premature infants. Infants receiving human milk during the first 2 weeks become biochemically riboflavin-deficient, partly through photodegradation of riboflavin during the banking and delivery of human milk. Animal studies have shown that the metabolic lesions of riboflavin deficiency in sucking neonates differ in important ways from those seen later after weaning. Techniques are described for non-invasive study of functional riboflavin requirements by premature infants. It appears prudent to supplement human milk-fed babies…

[Clinical and biochemical aspects of riboflavin deficiency in Haiti].

A study has been carried out in Haiti, involving 65 human subjects, mostly children, 39 of which had clinical symptoms of riboflavin deficiency, in order to correlate clinical symptoms and erythrocyte glutathion reductase activity. Angular stomatitis was associated with overt biochemical deficiency in 25% of the cases examined and in most cases seemed to be related to other nutritional or infectious disorders.

Thiamine, riboflavin and pyridoxine deficiency in psychiatric in-patients.

One hundred and seventy-two successive admissions to a district general hospital psychiatric unit were examined. Routine psychiatric, drug and dietary histories were taken and signs of avitaminosis B specifically noted. Red cell transketolase (for thiamine deficiency), glutathione reductase (for riboflavin deficiency) and aspartate transaminase (for pyridoxine deficiency) were measured. Of the patients, 53 per cent were deficient in at least one vitamin, 12 per cent in more than one (30 per cent in thiamine, 27 per cent in riboflavin and 9 per cent in pyridoxine). Schizophrenics and alcoholics…

Effects of riboflavin deficiency on the lipids of rat liver.

Newly weaned male rats were maintained on a riboflavin-free diet for 5 weeks, and a study was made on the effect of the deficiency upon liver lipids. The content of glyceride in the livers varied among the deficient rats. High contents of glyceride were demonstrated in one-third of the deficient rats, whereas the similar level as that of control was shown in the remaining deficient rats. Contents of phospholipids and relative amounts of individual phospholipids were not altered significantly by the deficiency. Riboflavin deficiency exerted effects on fatty acid components of liver lipids. The …

Riboflavin deficiency in infants and children with heart disease.

Thirty-one infants and children with cardiac disease were randomly selected to determine whether riboflavin deficiency is more prevalent among those with cardiac disease than among a group of comparable socioeconomic status without cardiac disease. Riboflavin studies were initiated since it is a representative member of the B complex and a specific and sensitive biochemical method is available to detect deficiency of this vitamin. The method involves the determination of the degree of saturation of erythrocyte glutathione reductase. Twenty-seven of the subjects had congenital heart disease and…
