Mus (Pyromys) dumbara, a new endemic species of spiny mouse (Mammalia, Rodentia, Muridae) from Sri Lanka.

A new species of spiny mouse, Mus (Pyromys) dumbarasp. nov., is described from the Dumbara (Knuckles) Mountain Range in Sri Lanka, based on an integrated assessment of external morphology, cranial characteristics, mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequence data. This species is assigned to the subgenus Pyromys on the basis of two defining cranial characteristics: the presence of a supraorbital ridge and incisive foramina that extend to the mid-length of first upper molar. Mus dumbara sp. nov. is characterised by a tail distinctly longer than its combined head and body length and a moderately promi

Syphacia obvelata (Nematode, Oxyuridae) infecting laboratory mice Mus musculus (Rodentia, Muridae): phylogeny and host-parasite relationship.

Syphacia obvelata is a pinworm nematode parasite infecting man and laboratory animals in high abundance. This parasitological study was carried out during the period of March 2014-February 2015 to investigate the helminth parasites infecting the laboratory mice Mus musculus in the Animal House at Cairo University, Egypt. The prevalence of S. obvelata in M. musculus was 75.0 %. The extent of infection with S. obvelata is analyzed according to the sex of the host mice. It was shown that the prevalence of male infection was greater than female worms. Morphological characterization revealed that t

Host cell/Orientia tsutsugamushi interactions: evolution and expression of syndecan-4 in Asian rodents (Rodentia, Muridae).

Scrub typhus is an acute febrile zoonotic disease and worldwide more than a billion people may be at risk for infection. Orientia tsutsugamushi, the causative agent of scrub typhus, is an obligate intracellular bacterium. Rodents are reported to be the primary reservoir hosts of the disease and according to the most recent surveys, all species within the Rattus sensu lato complex of the tribe Rattini are carriers of scrub typhus. There is no evidence that any of mouse (Mus) species serves as the primary reservoir of the bacterium even when occurring in sympatry with wild infected rats. This co

New Pudicinae (Trichostrongylina, Heligmosomoidea), Pudica ctenomydis n. sp. parasite of Ctenomys talarum (Rodentia: Octodontidae) from Argentina.

A total of 138 nematodes were found in the small intestine of Ctenomys talarum (Octodontidae) from Mar de Cobo, Argentina. A new nematode species, Pudica ctenomydis n. sp., is described. The new species more closely resembles P. pujoli Durette-Desset, 1990, parasite of Microcavia niata Thomas, from Bolivia. It can be distinguished from P. pujoli by the number of ridges and characteristics of the synlophe, the spicular morphology, differences in length between rays 9 and 10, and by the presence of a symmetrical caudal bursa and a cuticular expansion surrounding the body between vulva and anus i

Western gray squirrel (Rodentia: Sciuridae): a primary reservoir host of Borrelia burgdorferi in Californian oak woodlands?

In California, dense woodlands have been recognized as important biotopes where humans are exposed to the nymphal stage of the western blacklegged tick, Ixodes pacificus Cooley & Kohls, the primary vector of the Lyme disease spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto (s.s.), in the far-western United States. To identify the principal reservoir host(s) of this spirochete, and of closely related spirochetes in the B. burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) complex, in dense woodlands in Mendocino County, California, approximately 50 species of birds and mammals, including wood rats and kangaroo rats, w

Ecological factors shaping the ectoparasite community assembly of the Azara's Grass Mouse, Akodon azarae (Rodentia: Cricetidae).

Parasites are integral members of the global biodiversity. They are useful indicators of environmental stress, food web structure and diversity. Ectoparasites have the potential to transmit vector-borne diseases of public health and veterinary importance and to play an important role in the regulation and evolution of host populations. The interlinkages between hosts, parasites and the environment are complex and challenging to study, leading to controversial results. Most previous studies have been focused on one or two parasite groups, while hosts are often co-infected by different taxa. The

Parasitism underground: lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera) from Ctenomys talarum (Rodentia: Ctenomyidae) along its coastal distribution in Argentina.

Species of South American subterranean rodents belonging to the genus Ctenomys (commonly called tuco-tucos) are widely distributed across the southern Neotropical region. Despite their relatively well-studied biology and reproductive physiology, current knowledge of their ectoparasite fauna is limited to a few ambiguous studies, based on scattered samples from a small number of host individuals. Ctenomys talarum is the most widely distributed species in the genus. Lice (Phthiraptera) were collected from these tuco-tucos throughout their entire coastal range. Two species, one chewing louse (Gyr

A new Syphacia species (Nematoda: Oxyuridae) collected from Bunomys spp. (Rodentia: Muridae) in central Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Syphacia (Syphacia) rifaii sp. n. (Nematoda: Oxyuridae) is described from endemic Bunomys chrysocomus and Bunomys prolatus (Rodentia: Muridae) on Sulawesi Island, Indonesia. The new species is closest morphologically to Syphacia (Syphacia) sulawesiensis , parasitic in Rattus xanthurus from Sulawesi Island, by having large vesicular lateral alae in males, but is readily distinguished by having a smaller body, a round cephalic plate in both sexes, the absence of lateral alae in females, a longer relative distance between excretory pore and vulva, and smaller eggs. Syphacia (S.) rifaii is surmise…

Gaudeamus lavocati sp. nov. (Rodentia, Hystricognathi) from the early Oligocene of Zallah, Libya: first African caviomorph?

A new African species of hystricognathous rodent, Gaudeamus lavocati sp. nov., is described herein from the early Oligocene deposits of Zallah locality (Sirt basin, Central Libya). The dental morphology of this species is very close to that of some earliest South American caviomorphs. It allows a reinterpretation of molar crest homologies among earliest caviomorphs, pentalophodonty being confirmed as the plesiomorphic molar condition in Caviomorpha. This morphological resemblance argues for close affinities between Gaudeamus and earliest South American hystricognaths. Cladistic analysis suppor

The PCR-based detection of Leishmania major infections in Meriones libycus (Rodentia: Muridae) from southern Iran.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is an increasing public-health problem in the countries of the Mediterranean region. In southern Iran, for example, the incidence of CL has more than doubled over the last decade. As part of an investigation of this worrying trend, the leishmanial infections of the wild rodents that may act as reservoir hosts were investigated in the Iranian province of Fars. Overall, 82 rodents, 56 of them Libyan jirds (Meriones libycus), were collected, in live traps, from a new, hypo-endemic focus of zoonotic CL. When Giemsa-stained smears of ear tissue or any lesions on the rod

Morphological and molecular characterization of Aspiculuris tetraptera (nematoda: Heteroxynematidae) from Mus musculus (rodentia: Muridae) in Saudi Arabia.

Aspiculuris tetraptera a pinworm of mice, is an important parasite in institutions with mice colonies for both research and teaching purposes. Infection with this parasite has impact on biomedical research. This is likely due to the availability of the parasite's eggs in the environment, therefore can easily be transmitted and infection is generally asymptomatic. No information regarding the prevalence, morphology or phylogeny is available on A. tetraptera from Saudi Arabia. A group of 50 laboratory mice were investigated for the presence of A. tetraptera. Worms were described morphologically

A taxonomic review of hymenolepidids (Eucestoda, Hymenolepididae) from dormice (Rodentia, Gliridae), with descriptions of two new species.

In present study the systematic and taxonomic position of hymenolepidids parasitizing rodents of the family Gliridae from Europe and Central Asia is discussed. Hymenolepis myoxi is redescribed on the basis of the type material from the fat dormouse Glis glis deposited in the collection of the Museum für Naturkunde, Berlin, Germany. Significant corrections of morphologically distinctive characters attributable to H. myoxi include: (1) recognition of a rudimentary rostellar apparatus; (2) absence of rostellar hooks and spination on the suckers; and (3) tissues of the scolex and neck filled with

On cognitive ecology and the environmental factors that promote Alzheimer disease: lessons from Octodon degus (Rodentia: Octodontidae).

Cognitive ecologist posits that the more efficiently an animal uses information from the biotic and abiotic environment, the more adaptive are its cognitive abilities. Nevertheless, this approach does not test for natural neurodegenerative processes under field or experimental conditions, which may recover animals information processing and decision making and may explain, mechanistically, maladaptive behaviors. Here, we call for integrative approaches to explain the relationship between ultimate and proximate mechanisms behind social behavior. We highlight the importance of using the endemic

Long-term balancing selection at the blood group-related gene B4galnt2 in the genus Mus (Rodentia; Muridae).

Recent surveys of the human genome have highlighted the significance of balancing selection in relation to understanding the evolutionary origins of disease-associated variation. Cis-regulatory variation at the blood group-related glycosyltransferase B4galnt2 is associated with a phenotype in mice that closely resembles a common human bleeding disorder, von Willebrand disease. In this study, we have performed a survey of the 5' flanking region of the B4galnt2 gene in several Mus musculus subspecies and Mus spretus. Our results reveal a clear pattern of trans-species polymorphism and indicate t

Prevalence of two species of Litomosoides (Nematoda: Filarioidea) parasites of Akodon cursor (Rodentia: Muridae) from southeastern Brazil.

Two species of filariids, Litomosoides silvai and Litomosoides chagasfilhoi, were collected from the thoracic and abdominal cavities, respectively, of Akodon cursor, from Catimbau Grande, Rio Bonito, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Fifty-eight rodents were necropsied and 15 (25.9%) were parasitized. Four of the 15 infected rodents (26.7%) presented concurrent infections, but each species had separate and specific sites of infection. This is the first report of a rodent species parasitized with naturally occurring, concurrent infections with two species of filarial worms.

Acoustic repertoire and vocal activity of three juvenile female cerrado red-nosed mice, Wiedomys cerradensis (Rodentia: Cricetidae).

We describe and classify the vocal repertoire of three juvenile female Wiedomys cerradensis from 144 h of continuous recordings. We identified 42 260 calls, categorized into six distinct vocalization types: quaver, flat, varied, sustained, sweep, and scream. A supervised Random Forest algorithm mathematically validated these classifications with high accuracy (98.12%; Kappa = 0.96), identifying frequency modulation and spectral structure as the most informative parameters for discrimination. Preliminary analysis revealed daily activity peaks across the 24 h cycle. This preliminary study charac
