Pituitary Abscess Syndrome in Ruminants: Nine Cases.

Pituitary abscess syndrome (PAS) is a rare neurological disorder, typically associated with progressive dysfunction of the cerebrum and brainstem. Reporting PAS in ruminants is essential to broaden the global veterinary understanding of this condition. The present study describes the epidemiological, clinical, laboratory, microbiological, and pathological findings of nine ruminant cases diagnosed with PAS. Neurological signs were the most prominent clinical manifestations and included altered mentation, tongue hypotonia, nystagmus, blindness, ear ptosis, circling, facial hypoalgesia, head pres

Trichostrongylosis: a zoonotic disease of small ruminants.

In the present world a significant threat to human health is posed by zoonotic diseases. Helminth parasites of ruminants are one of the most common zoonotic organisms on the planet. Among them, trichostrongylid nematodes of ruminants, found worldwide, parasitize humans in different parts of the world with varying rates of incidence, particularly among rural and tribal communities with poor hygiene, pastoral livelihood and poor access to health services. In the Trichostrongyloidea superfamily, Haemonchus contortus, Teladorsagia circumcincta, Marshallagia marshalli, Nematodirus abnormalis and Tr

L-Arginine Nutrition and Metabolism in Ruminants.

L-Arginine (Arg) plays a central role in the nitrogen metabolism (e.g., syntheses of protein, nitric oxide, polyamines, and creatine), blood flow, nutrient utilization, and health of ruminants. This amino acid is produced by ruminal bacteria and is also synthesized from L-glutamine, L-glutamate, and L-proline via the formation of L-citrulline (Cit) in the enterocytes of young and adult ruminants. In pre-weaning ruminants, most of the Cit formed de novo by the enterocytes is used locally for Arg production. In post-weaning ruminants, the small intestine-derived Cit is converted into Arg primari

Gross intestinal morphometry and allometry in ruminants.

While some descriptions of ruminants' dietary adaptations suggest that the length of the intestinal tract reflects the proportion of grass or browse in the diet, this assumption has been questioned. We collated data on body mass (BM), as well as small intestine, caecum, colon/rectum, large and total intestine length in 68 ruminant species, and, while accounting for the phylogenetic structure of the dataset, evaluated both allometric scaling and the potential influence of diet, digestive physiology or climate proxies on measures of intestine length. Intestinal length generally scaled to BM at a

Spartium junceum L. poisoning in small ruminants.

An outbreak of neurological disorders in a flock of 20 sheep coming from a rural farm in Civitella Roveto, Italy, occurred in winter 2015. All the animals showed tonic-clonic convulsions followed by muscle paralysis associated with dilated pupils, tremor, tachycardia, tachypnea and diarrhea. The presence of bundles of dry broom of Spartium junceum L. in the feed, eaten by the animals supported the hypothesis of plant intoxication. Two animals died after worsening of clinical signs. The anatomopathological findings and the laboratory results ruled out viral or bacterial infections or accidental

Toxicity of Crepis lacera in grazing ruminants.

BACKGROUND: Crepis lacera is a plant from the Asteraceae family that is common in the Mediterranean region. Farmers believe that this plant may be deadly to small ruminants in areas of southern Italy. However, scientific evidence is lacking, and no proof exists that C. lacera is toxic to ruminants. Necropsies conducted on four sheep revealed lesions in their livers and kidneys. RESULTS: In the current study, we described sheep poisoning and isolated secondary metabolites from Crepis lacera to assess the metabolites' biological activity both in vitro and in vivo. Phytochemical study of the aer

Advances in peste des petits ruminants vaccines.

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a highly contagious disease of small ruminants that leads to high morbidity and mortality thereby results in devastating economic consequences to the livestock industry. PPR is currently endemic across most parts of Asia and Africa, the two regions with the highest concentration of poor people in the world. Sheep and goats in particularly contribute significantly towards the upliftment of livelihood of the poor and marginal farmers in these regions. In this context, PPR directly affecting the viability of sheep and goat husbandry has emerged as a major hurdl

Implantation and Establishment of Pregnancy in Ruminants.

The establishment of pregnancy in ruminants occurs during the peri-implantation period and involves the suppression of the endometrial luteolytic mechanism to maintain progesterone production by the corpus luteum (CL). Reciprocal interactions between the elongating conceptus (embryo/fetus and associated extraembryonic membranes) and endometrium culminate in implantation. Antiluteolytic effects of the conceptus are due to the production of interferon tau (IFNT) by the trophoblast that has a paracrine effect to inhibit the upregulation of oxytocin receptors in the endometrial epithelia, thereby

Artificial insemination of small ruminants - a review.

Artificial insemination (AI) can undoubtedly be regarded as the oldest and most widely used assisted reproductive technique/technology (ART) applied in livestock production and it is one of the most important ARTs. The three cornerstones of its application are that it is simple, economical and successful. Artificial insemination offers many well-known benefits for producers. Fresh, fresh + diluted + chilled and frozen semen can be used for AI in small ruminants. To ensure its successful use, the AI technique must be selected on the basis of the type of semen planned to be used. This review pap

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in small ruminants.

Small ruminants are an important component of the global production systems of meat and wool, and their reproductive biology is well known. However, the incorporation of assisted reproduction techniques (ART) in the production systems of small ruminants is not as well developed as for other domestic species. Normally, production systems that incorporate ARTs are restricted to artificial insemination or in vivo embryo transfer. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is one of the ARTs techniques reported for small ruminants and consists of the injection of spermatozoa inside an oocyte, bypassi

Detection of early pregnancy in domestic ruminants.

Tests for the detection of pregnancy early after insemination have not yet reached their full potential. Currently, the milk progesterone assay provides the earliest possible test, at an interval of one oestrous cycle after insemination, i.e. 17, 21 and 21 days in sheep, goats and cows respectively. This assay is pregnancy non-specific and rate of detection of pregnant animals is acceptable but less than desirable. Detection of activity of early pregnancy factor may develop into an excellent early test for many species, but the rosette inhibition test which is currently required has limited de

[Biochemical semiology of the liver in ruminants].

Many different serum biochemical tests can help in the diagnosis of liver disturbances in ruminants. The best tests for hepato-cellular damage are the measurement of enzymes such as glutamate dehydrogenase, sorbitol dehydrogenase and, if available, arginase or ornithine carbamoyl transferase. Disturbances of biliary function can be investigated through the measurement of so-called "cholestasis enzyme markers" such as gammaglutamyl transferase or alkaline phosphatases; bilirubin and bile salts can also be helpful. Liver insufficiency can be approached through the measurement of serum albumin, f

Isolation and molecular characterization of peste des petits ruminants' virus in small ruminants from outbreak cases in Eastern Ethiopia.

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is highly contagious viral disease threatening the health and productivity of small ruminants across Africa and Asia. Despite the wide spread vaccination efforts in Ethiopia, recurrent outbreak continue to occur, with limited molecular data on circulating virus strain, particularly in east Africa. This study aimed to isolate and molecular characterization of PPRV from outbreak cases in small ruminants in eastern part of Ethiopia and evaluate the diagnostic performance of immune-capture ELISA (IC-ELISA), conventional PCR, and real time RT-PCR. Molecular cloning of CD18 of bison, deer and elk, and comparison with that of other ruminants and non-ruminants.

Pneumonia caused by Mannheimia haemolytica is an important disease of cattle, domestic sheep, bighorn sheep and goats. Leukotoxin (Lkt) produced by M. haemolytica is cytolytic to all leukocyte subsets of these species. Lkt utilizes CD18, the beta subunit of beta(2)-integrins, as its functional receptor on leukocytes of these species. Cytotoxicity assays revealed that leukocytes from bison, deer, and elk are also susceptible to Lkt-induced cytolysis. The availability of cDNA encoding CD18 of bison, deer and elk would facilitate the comparison of a greater number of ruminant CD18 cDNA with that

Some phytotoxins causing reproductive alterations in ruminants.

The presence of phytotoxins in plants constitutes a health risk for herbivores, particularly on ruminants who accidently consume them. Among the adverse effects produced by these are reproductive alterations, represented by abortion, infertility, and morphological alterations in neonates, which are frequently attributed to other causes. While in some cases the plants that contain such metabolites are known, other times they are not, leading to alterations that are difficult to treat considering that their toxicodynamics are unknown. The objective of this documentary research is to provide info

Anthelmintic resistance in ruminants: challenges and solutions.

Anthelmintic resistance (AR) is a growing concern for effective parasite control in farmed ruminants globally. Combatting AR will require intensified and integrated research efforts in the development of innovative diagnostic tests to detect helminth infections and AR, sustainable anthelmintic treatment strategies and the development of complementary control approaches such as vaccination and plant-based control. It will also require a better understanding of socio-economic drivers of anthelmintic treatment decisions, in order to support a behavioural shift and develop targeted communication s
