Health Beliefs and Breast Cancer Screening in Rural Appalachia: An Evaluation of the Health Belief Model.

PURPOSE: This study explored the role of the Health Belief Model in predicting breast cancer screening among women in rural Appalachia. Health beliefs (perceived susceptibility to breast cancer, severity of breast cancer, and benefits and barriers to screening) were used to predict health behavior (mammogram frequency). METHOD: A total of 170 women aged 18-78 were recruited at a free health clinic in central Appalachia. Women completed surveys that assessed demographic characteristics, mammogram frequency, and perceived susceptibility, severity, and benefits and barriers to mammography. FIND

Rural health care workforce retention measures: A rapid scoping review.

PURPOSE: Rural Veterans face persistent barriers to care, often exacerbated by health care workforce shortages. Although recruitment initiatives are important, retaining providers in rural areas is equally critical to sustaining access and continuity of care. This rapid scoping review examined how "rural workforce retention" is defined and measured in the peer-reviewed literature and synthesized recommended reporting elements to improve clarity and comparability. METHODS: Six bibliographic databases were searched (2014-2025) for English-language studies of rural health care in the United Stat…

Menstrual health among adolescents and young adults in rural Haiti.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent and young adult (AYA) females in low- and middle-income countries often face disparities in menstrual health (MH). Poor MH and lack of sexual and reproductive health education leads to school absenteeism, increasing risk for adverse psychosocial and educational outcomes. Further, disasters (e.g., earthquakes) are linked with unsafe living environments and sanitation facilities for women. We sought to describe MH perspectives and practices among AYAs in rural Haiti. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey in two rural communities in Haiti. AYA females aged 14-24 y

Dental anxiety and oral health outcomes among rural older adults.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to determine the degree to which rural older adults are able to complete a measure of dental anxiety and to assess the prevalence, as well as the demographic and oral health characteristics, of individuals reporting high dental anxiety. METHODS: A population-based sample of 635 African American, American Indian and White older adults (age ≥ 60 years) completed an in-home survey, and 362 dentate participants completed an oral examination. Dental anxiety was measured using the four-item Corah's Dental Anxiety Scale (DAS). Gender, ethnicity, age, educat

Health status of illicit stimulant drug users in rural Ohio.

The SF-8 health survey was used to assess the physical and mental health status of a community sample of not-in-treatment, illicit stimulant drug-using adults (n = 249) living in rural Ohio. Physical health status scores indicative of poor health were present in 30.5% of the sample. Poor physical health was associated with older age (OR = 1.06; 95% C.I. = 1.02-1.11), chronic disease (OR = 2.24, 95% C.I. = 1.14-4.40), and frequent opioid use (OR = 3.14, 95% C.I. = 1.16-8.50). Poor mental health status scores were present in 63.9% of the sample. Men were less likely (OR = 0.25, 95% C.I. = 0.11-0

Recruitment of rural health care providers: a regional recruiter strategy.

CONTEXT: Access to care in rural areas is a major problem. Despite more than 20% of the US population residing in these areas, only 9% of physicians practice there. Extensive research has documented multiple issues that affect where physicians decide to locate and maintain practices. Creative strategies have been used to influence these recruitment and retention decisions. An emerging strategy, borne out of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Southern Rural Access Program (SRAP), effectively uses a targeted regional approach to assist rural communities and health care facilities in assessing

Health risk behavior of rural secondary school students in Zimbabwe.

A socioculturally appropriate health risk behavior instrument, modeled after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), was administered to 717 secondary school students in a rural area of Zimbabwe. Comparisons of risk behaviors by gender and school grade were made using univariate procedures and multiple logistic regression. Males were significantly more likely than females to have had sexual intercourse (odds ratio = 5.02, p < .0001) and to report drug use behaviors. Males also were significantly more likely to report early initiation (by age 13

The effects of housing on health and health risks in an aging population: a qualitative study in rural Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Over the last decade, Thailand has experienced an aging population, especially in rural areas. Research finds a strong, positive relationship between good quality housing and health, and this paper assesses the impact and living experience of housing of older people in rural Thailand. METHODS: This was a mixed-method study, using data from observations of the physical adequacy of housing, semistructured interviews with key informants, and archival information from health records for 13 households in rural Thailand. RESULTS: There were four main themes, each of which led to health

Breast cancer knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors: a comparison of rural health and non-health workers.

The present study surveyed the current levels of knowledge and the attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors of health workers (mostly nurses) with respect to breast cancer and its early detection. In addition, health workers were compared with non-health workers to determine whether the two groups differed with respect to the above variables. The sample comprised 402 women sampled from work sites in a rural community in the Midwest. The results indicated that health workers (n = 96) scored very high on knowledge, had a very positive attitude toward the notion of early detection, and reported strong i

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects of opening a school-based health center (SBHC) on primary and preventive care utilization among students in a rural setting. The sample included patients aged 5-18 years residing in 1 school district that opened an SBHC and those residing in similar districts without a center, spanning 2.5 years before and 2.5 years after the new center opened. Women's non-farm employment and household dietary quality in rural China: evidence from a national rural health perspective.

BACKGROUND: Improving dietary quality and reducing nutrition-related inequalities remain important public health challenges in rural populations. Women often play central roles in household food purchasing, meal preparation, and resource allocation, suggesting that women's employment transitions may be closely linked to household nutritional outcomes. This study examines the association between married women's non-farm employment and household dietary quality in rural China and explores potential pathways underlying this relationship. METHODS: Data were drawn from 1,723 rural households in th

Student-led rural health fairs: attempting to improve medical education and access to health care.

OBJECTIVES: Residents of rural communities, especially in the Southeast, have decreased access to health care. Ensuring medical students receive adequate exposure to their issues is complicated by the urban location of most schools. We describe health fairs conducted in rural communities to suggest how having medical students use screening tools can identify patients with risk factors for disease which can offer students the opportunity to learn about rural health issues through patient counseling. METHODS: The Mitchell Wolfson Sr. Department of Community Service, a University of Miami Miller…

An Overview of Public Health Services Among Local Health Departments in Rural Versus Urban Jurisdictions.

CONTEXT: Rural populations face greater barriers to care and worse health outcomes than urban populations. Local health departments (LHDs) serving rural populations may play a key role in bridging the clinical care gap within their communities. OBJECTIVE: To assess and describe the differences in services provided by rural and urban LHDs, as well as the contextual factors contributing to those differences. METHODS: Data from the 2022 National Profile of Local Health Departments was used to estimate the provision of various clinical and population-based services and types of occupations emplo

Engaging Rural Youth in Community Health Assessment: A Visioning Session Tool for Health Promotion Practice.

Community health assessments (CHAs) are a foundational component of public health planning and accreditation, yet youth are often underrepresented in these processes, particularly in rural communities. Excluding youth perspectives limits opportunities to understand community assets and needs that directly shape young people's health and well-being. This article describes a low-cost, practice-based visioning session tool developed by a local health department to engage rural youth in the CHA process as part of routine public health practice. The visioning session tool uses creative expression t
