Preparation of bioplastic consisting of salmon milt DNA.

The microplastic that pollutes the ocean is a serious problem around the world. The bioplastic consisting of biopolymers which is degraded in nature, is one of the strategies to solve this problem. Although the bioplastics consisting of protein, polysaccharide, polylactic acid, etc., have been reported, which consist of DNA, one of the most important materials in the genetic process, have not been reported to the best of our knowledge. In addition, a large amount of DNA-containing materials, such as salmon milts, is discarded as industrial waste around the world. Therefore, we demonstrated the…

Is it advantageous for Atlantic salmon to be triploid at lower temperatures?

Marine organisms living at low temperatures tend to have larger genomes and larger cells which suggest that these traits can be beneficial in colder environments. In fish, triploidy (three complete sets of chromosomes) can be induced experimentally following fertilization, which provides a model system to investigate the hypothesis that larger cells and genomes offers a physiological advantage at low temperatures. We tested this hypothesis by measuring metabolic rates and swimming performance of diploid and triploid Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) post smolts acclimated to 3 or 10.5 °C. At 10.5 …

Effects of growth hormone on the salmon pituitary proteome.

Growth hormone 1 (GH1), a pituitary hormone, plays a key role in the regulation of growth. Both excess GH1 treatment and overexpression of a GH1 transgene promote growth of salmon, but these animals exhibit physiological abnormalities in viability, fertility and metabolism, which might be related to pituitary function. However, the molecular dynamics induced in the pituitary by excess GH1 remain unknown. In this study, we performed iTRAQ proteome analysis of the amago salmon pituitary, with and without excess GH1 treatment, and found that the expression levels of proteins related to endocrine …

Relapsing polychondritis, another cause for a "salmon patch".

We present the case of a patient with long-standing relapsing polychondritis and, first, an orbital mass and, then, a "salmon patch" conjunctival mass. The histologic pathologic findings were similar on both occasions, showing an inflammatory process with reactive lymphoid hyperplasia. In both situations, the masses responded to a short course of systemic corticosteroids. Although ocular inflammatory changes from relapsing polychondritis have been well described, to our knowledge, there have been no previous reports of conjunctival changes in the form of a salmon patch lesion, as described her…

Summer lesion syndrome in salmon: a retrospective study.

The factors involved in the development of 'summer lesion syndrome' were studied on 13 salmon farms based in the coastal waters of the west of Ireland. The primary causal factor in the development of the syndrome appeared to be overexposure to solar ultraviolet radiation. The pathology of the condition is described, the predisposing and reinforcing factors are considered and a hypothesis for the cause of the syndrome is proposed.

An evaluation of antibodies and clinical resistance to salmon calcitonin.

21 patients with Paget's disease of bone and one with osteoporosis were studied to detect development of antibodies to salmon calcitonin during chronic therapy. Antibody titers ranged from 1:40 to 1:30,000 in plasma obtained after treatment of 11 patients. Radio-immunoelectrophoresis revealed that the antibodies were restricted to the gammaG class. One patient, W. O., with Paget's disease initially responded to treatment with a decrease in bone turnover, but later became resistant to the hormone in association with the appearance of a very high titer (1:30,000) of antibody against salmon calci…

Vertebral column regionalisation in Chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha.

Teleost vertebral centra are often similar in size and shape, but vertebral-associated elements, i.e. neural arches, haemal arches and ribs, show regional differences. Here we examine how the presence, absence and specific anatomical and histological characters of vertebral centra-associated elements can be used to define vertebral column regions in juvenile Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha). To investigate if the presence of regions within the vertebral column is independent of temperature, animals raised at 8 and 12 °C were studied at 1400 and 1530 degreedays, in the freshwater phase…

Time-delayed subsidies: interspecies population effects in salmon.

Cross-boundary nutrient inputs can enhance and sustain populations of organisms in nutrient-poor recipient ecosystems. For example, Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) can deliver large amounts of marine-derived nutrients to freshwater ecosystems through their eggs, excretion, or carcasses. This has led to the question of whether nutrients from one generation of salmon can benefit juvenile salmon from subsequent generations. In a study of 12 streams on the central coast of British Columbia, we found that the abundance of juvenile coho salmon was most closely correlated with the abundance of adu…

Diphyllobothrium latum infection after eating domestic salmon flesh.

Diphyllobothrium latum infection in human is not common in Korea and only thirty seven cases have been reported since 1921. We report two cases of fish tapeworm infection after ingestion of raw cherry salmon (Oncorhynchus masou) caught in the domestic river. Among four family members who ate together raw salmon flesh six months ago, just two, mother and daughter, were infected. It is our expectation that the salmon associated tapeworm infections would be enlisted as one of the major parasitic problems with the growing consumption of salmon in Korea.

L-ascorbyl-2-sulfate alleviates Atlantic salmon scurvy.

Duplicate lots of 150 Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), average weight 0.5 g, were fed NRC diet H-440 base containing L-ascorbic acid (C1) or L-ascorbyl-2-sulfate (C2S); or L-ascorbyl-2-monophosphate (C2MP): at 0 or 100 mg C1; 50, 100, 300 mg C2S; or 50, 100 mg C2MP per kg dry diet in 12 degrees C freshwater tanks. After 12 weeks, negative controls (no vitamin C) exhibited reduced growth, scoliosis, lordosis, and petechial hemorrhages typical of fish scurvy. All other lots grew normally. Four 100-fish lots of scorbutic salmon, average weight 3.3 g, were placed on recovery diets of 0, 50, or 300 m…

Chromosome aberrations in pressure-induced triploid Atlantic salmon.

BACKGROUND: Triploid organisms have three sets of chromosomes. In Atlantic salmon, hydrostatic pressure treatment of newly fertilized eggs has been extensively used to produce triploids which are functionally sterile due to their unpaired chromosomes. These fish often perform poorly on commercial farms, sometimes without explanation. Inheritance patterns in individuals subjected to pressure treatment have not been investigated in Atlantic salmon thus far. However, work on other species suggests that this treatment can result in aberrant inheritance. We therefore studied this in Atlantic salmon…

Nocardiosis in freshwater reared Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha).

CASE HISTORY: An investigation was conducted to identify the cause of mortalities in freshwater reared Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha). Mortalities occurred in juvenile salmon, at a salmon rearing facility in the South Island of New Zealand. The affected fish were from a pen inside the facility with no surrounding pens or other year classes affected. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Clinically affected fish presented with skin lesions. The majority of skin lesions were unruptured, boil-like, raised circular masses up to 4 cm in diameter, particularly on the dorsolateral aspects and the flank. A n…

[Salmon-pink colored conjunctival tumor with amyloid deposits].

An 82-year-old male patient presented with a salmon-pink colored conjunctival tumor of the left eye. A circumscribed, dense and whitish portion was detected by clinical examination. The histophological and immunhistochemical examination of the biopsy tissue revealed a CD20+ marginal zone lymphoma of the conjunctiva with amyloid deposits. Extranodal marginal zone lymphoma at this site is the most common lymphoma of the ocular adnexa and accounts for 5-10% of malignant diseases. An association with amyloid production is very rare and according to the current state of knowledge has no known impac…

American dippers indicate contaminant biotransport by Pacific salmon.

Migrating salmon can increase productivity in Pacific Northwestern streams and lakes through the deposition of nutrients from their decomposing carcasses after spawning. Several studies also report simultaneous biotransport of persistent organic pollutants that have contaminated lake food webs, although no similar effect has been shown conclusively in rivers. We tested the prediction that salmon enhance contaminants in river food webs using the American dipper (Cinclus mexicanus), an aquatic songbird and a recognized indicator of stream quality. Over 3 years, we analyzed 29 dipper eggs and aqu…

Pacific salmon extinctions: quantifying lost and remaining diversity.

Widespread population extirpations and the consequent loss of ecological, genetic, and life-history diversity can lead to extinction of evolutionarily significant units (ESUs) and species. We attempted to systematically enumerate extinct Pacific salmon populations and characterize lost ecological, life history, and genetic diversity types among six species of Pacific salmon (Chinook [Oncorhynchus tshawytscha], sockeye [O. nerka], coho [O. kisutch], chum [O. keta], and pink salmon [O. gorbuscha] and steelhead trout [O. mykiss]) from the western contiguous United States. We estimated that, colle…

The Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) antimicrobial peptide cathelicidin-2 is a molecular host-associated cue for the salmon louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis).

Chemical signals are a key element of host-parasite interactions. In marine ecosystems, obligate ectoparasites, such as sea lice, use chemical cues and other sensory signals to increase the probability of encountering a host and to identify appropriate hosts on which they depend to complete their life cycle. The chemical compounds that underlie host identification by the sea lice are not fully described or characterized. Here, we report a novel compound - the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) antimicrobial peptide cathelicidin-2 (Cath-2) - that acts as an activation cue for the marine parasitic co…
