[Isolated myeloid sarcoma involving the mediastinum].

Myeloid sarcoma is a rare extramedullary solid tumor consisting of immature myeloid cells and most commonly involving the bone, skin, lymph nodes, soft tissue, gastrointestinal tract and testis. Mediastinal myeloid sarcoma is very rare. There are two major types of myeloid sarcoma: granulocytic sarcoma and monoblastic sarcoma, according to immature cell type. Myeloid sarcoma is found in 2%-8% of patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Myeloid sarcoma may develop before or concurrently with AML, or may be the initial manifestation of AML relapse in previously treated patients. Blast transfo

Vaginal Myeloid Sarcoma: A Rare Extramedullary Presentation of a Myeloid Neoplasm.

Myeloid sarcoma is a rare extramedullary tumor often associated with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), but it can also appear as an isolated lesion. Vaginal involvement is extremely rare and may lead to delayed diagnosis due to nonspecific symptoms. We report a 41-year-old woman with a history of two cesarean sections who presented with dyspareunia. A firm, fixed mass was palpated on the posterior vaginal wall. Transvaginal ultrasonography and pelvic MRI revealed a 7.5 × 4.3 cm mass in the rectovaginal space without rectal infiltration. The lesion was excised vaginally, and intraoperative endoscop

Isolated Intracranial Myeloid Sarcoma Occurring as Relapse in Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

Myeloid sarcoma (MS) or chloroma is a rare extramedullary tumor composed of extramedullary proliferation of blasts of granulocytic, monocytic, erythroid, or megakaryocytic lineage occurring at sites outside the bone marrow. MS occurs in 2%-8% of patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), sometimes it occurs as the presenting manifestation of relapse in a patient in remission. We describe the case of a young male with AML in remission for 6 years presenting with central nervous system symptoms. Magnetic resonance imaging showed an extra-axial altered intensity lesion in the parasagittal pariet

Testicular myeloid sarcoma: an unusual presentation of infant acute myeloid leukemia.

Testicular myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a rare disorder; even more so during infancy. There are only 3 cases described previously. We report a 3-month-old baby boy with MS who presented with a testicular mass. This case also features cerebrospinal fluid involvement at diagnosis and bone marrow pathology only detectable by genetic analysis. After completion of the initial treatment, the child relapsed with an MS in the brain and succumbed despite further therapy.

Bilateral orbital myeloid sarcoma as initial manifestation of acute myeloid leukemia.

BACKGROUND: Granulocytic sarcoma is a rare orbital complication of acute leukemia. It concerns primarily children under 10 years of age suffering from primitive acute myeloid leukemia. The diagnosis is made by clinical examination, computed tomography and confirmed by haematological investigations. The treatment approach is based on chemotherapy associated with intravenous steroid therapy. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 6-year-old girl who presented with bilateral proptosis revealing acute myeloid leukemia. The patient was treated by a combination of chemotherapeutic drugs in two phases

Oral Myeloid Sarcoma as a Marker of Relapse in Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

A 20-year-old woman with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with monocytic differentiation in remission presented with a recent onset painful indurated swelling on the tongue with fever. Although her peripheral blood picture was normal, the bone marrow biopsy was suggestive of a relapse of AML. A biopsy from the tongue lesion showed diffuse infiltration of lamina propria and submucosa by blast cells, positive for myeloperoxidase and CD11c and suggestive of oral myeloid sarcoma (MS). This presents an uncommon site of occurrence of MS and was a marker of relapse of AML. This case highlights the variab

The Progression of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia to Myeloid Sarcoma: A Systematic Review.

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a slow-growing type of cancer that originates in the blood-forming cells of the bone marrow and is caused by a chromosomal mutation that is thought to occur spontaneously. CML could potentially lead to the development of myeloid sarcoma (MS), which is a rare neoplasm composed of immature myeloid cells that could evolve into a tumor mass at any anatomical site other than the bone marrow. MS can develop spontaneously or as a result of another form of myeloid neoplasm. Most instances of CML precede blast phase (BP) within two to three years after the first diagno

Myeloid Sarcoma of the Paranasal Sinuses in a Patient with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is an uncommon extramedullary malignant tumor, and often represents a subgroup of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). MS of paranasal sinus origin is extremely rare. We report an uncommon case of sinonasal MS associated with AML, who was successfully treated with hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation. A 39-year-old male was admitted with complaints of left nasal obstruction and proptosis. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging identified a left ethmoidal mass involving the maxillary sinus, the orbit, and the skull base. Nasal endoscopic examination detected a whiti

Myeloid sarcomas of the head and neck in pediatric patients with myeloid leukemia.

Myeloid sarcoma is a rare extramedullary tumor composed of malignant myeloid cells that occur in the presence of myeloid leukemia. We report a case series of pediatric head and neck myeloid sarcomas representative of the epidemiology, symptomatology, laboratorial correlations, prognoses, and treatment of extramedullary leukemia. Presented are 3 cases involving patients ranging from 17 months to 11 years of age. Two patients were successfully treated with chemotherapy, and in the third patient, a large lytic lesion was treated palliatively with proton beam therapy. Knowledge and recognition of

Myeloid sarcoma in essential thrombocythemia that transformed into acute myeloid leukemia.

A 72-year-old man was diagnosed with essential thrombocythemia (ET) and was treated with hydroxyurea for approximately 5 years. He was well until April 2007. In May 2007, a slight fall in hemoglobin levels was found. In June 2007, an upper endoscopy performed to investigate the cause of anemia showed multiple polypoid lesions in the body of the stomach. A gastric biopsy showed a diffuse infiltration of very immature cells. Several additional immunohistochemical staining showed that the cells were positive for CD13, CD34, CD117, and HLA DR, but negative for myeloperoxidase, CD42b, glycophorin,

Acute Myeloid Leukemia with Myelodysplasia - Related Changes after Isolated Myeloid Sarcoma.

BACKGROUND: As a tumor mass, a myeloid sarcoma consists of myeloid blasts and presents at an anatomical site other than the bone marrow. In about one quarter of cases, myeloid sarcoma happens without an underlying acute myeloid leukemia or other myeloid neoplasm, and it may precede or coincide with AML or form acute blastic transformation of MDSs, MPNs, or MDS/MPNs. METHODS: Herein, we described a rare case of acute myeloid leukemia with myelodysplasia-related changes (AML-MRC), with WT1 mutation and high expression of TP53 after isolated myeloid sarcoma of lymph nodes showing a higher propor
