Myxoid synovial sarcoma: an underappreciated morphologic subset.

Focal myxoid change is a well-recognized feature of synovial sarcoma, but the presence of a predominantly myxoid stroma is rare. We describe seven cases of myxoid synovial sarcoma in which marked myxoid change initially obscured the diagnosis, leading to confusion (principally with malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor). The median age (20 yr) and tumor location (four lower extremity, two upper extremity, and one head and neck region) were similar to those found in typical synovial sarcoma. Histologically, five cases were monophasic spindle cell lesions with a lacy appearance in areas with a

[Penis synovial sarcoma: a rare case report].

Malignant neoplasms of the penis are infrequent, with sarcomas accounting for 5% of all cases. Synovial sarcoma is a specific subtype that has been reported in the scientific literature in this location on four occasions with clinically aggressive behavior, requiring oncologic resection of the lesion and management with complementary chemotherapeutic agents. The origin of these penile lesions is unknown and has been associated with predisposing factors such as previous exposure to radiotherapy and the presence of the SS18-SSX1/2/4 fusion gene. We present an unusual case of monophasic penile sy

Delayed PET/CT of Pericardial Synovial Sarcoma.

Pericardial synovial sarcoma is a rare malignancy. We report the case of a patient who was referred to our institution for a large pericardial effusion requiring pericardiocentesis. CT imaging revealed an inhomogeneous pericardial mass beside the right atrium, and then a PET/CT scan was performed. Standard images were inconclusive whether delayed images showed an FDG-avid pericardial lesion that was surgically removed with histological diagnosis of a poorly differentiated biphasic synovial sarcoma. When considering mediastinal or pericardial mass, a delayed PET/CT may improve lesion-to-backgro

Laryngeal synovial sarcoma: Report of 2 cases.

Synovial sarcoma is a malignant mesenchymal tumor. It most commonly occurs in the lower extremities of young adults. The head and neck are rare sites, accounting for less than 10%. The larynx is an extremely rare site. We report two cases of 27 and 18 year-old men who developed a synovial sarcoma of the larynx. They presented with hoarseness of voice and hemoptysis. Endoscopy detected a mass in the supraglottic region. The biopsy concluded a synovial sarcoma. Immunohistochemistry conveyed diagnostic certainty. They had been treated with total laryngectomy and post-operative radiotherapy. The 2

Primary Cardiac Synovial Sarcoma: A Case Report.

Primary cardiac sarcomas are rare clinical entities with an incidence rate of 0.0001% in collected autopsy series and are regarded as very aggressive tumors. We herein describe a 21-year-old woman presenting with syncope, dyspnea, and abdominal distention. She suffered from massive ascites, plural effusion, and liver congestion demonstrated by abdominal sonography and chest X-ray. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed a heterogeneous solid mass located in the right atrium; therefore, the patient underwent radical surgical excision of the tumor and 3 cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy. Fifteen m

Giant subcutaneous synovial sarcoma: an interesting case.

A 45-year-old lady presented to us with a large subcutaneous swelling on her left side of back of 1 year duration. Local examination revealed a 13×12 cm spherical swelling on the left lower paraspinal region. Magnetic resonance imaging of lumbosacral spine revealed a 13×12 cm mass having solid and cystic components with internal septations in the subcutaneous tissue of left posterior paraspinal area. The mass was hetrogenously hyperintense on T 2 weighted images suggestive of synovial sarcoma. Wide local excision of the lump was carried out followed by closure of the defect with a lateral inte

Synovial sarcoma: clinicopathologic features, treatment, and prognosis.

Synovial sarcoma is a characteristic subtype of soft tissue sarcomas with a predilection for young people. There may be a long delay in diagnosis or misdiagnosis, because of its insidious growth, varied presentation on imaging studies and associated joint pain, which can be confused with trauma. Diagnosis requires a tissue sample in the form of a needle or open biopsy. The needle biopsy may not be representative of the tumor, particular if it is biphasic, and it may be necessary to proceed to open biopsy. Ideally, the biopsy should be performed by the surgeon who will be performing the definit

Pediatric intradural extramedullary synovial sarcoma: case report.

OBJECTIVE: The diagnosis of intradural synovial sarcoma has not been previously published. This report provides a summary of the literature on this tumor and on tumors arising in this location, as well as a description of this patient's clinical course. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: An 11-year-old girl presented with back pain and radiculopathy. A magnetic resonance imaging scan of the spine revealed a spinal intradural, extramedullary mass at L2-L4 and four additional nodules of enhancement. INTERVENTION: The mass was nearly totally resected. Radiation and chemotherapy were administered. Intracran

Canine intrathoracic sarcoma with ultrastructural characteristics of human synovial sarcoma - case report.

BACKGROUND: Canine joint sarcomas, designated synovial sarcomas, are uncommon malignant mesenchymal neoplasms that occur in the large joints of the extremities of middle-aged, large-breed dogs. We report the diagnosis of an intrathoracic sarcoma with ultrastructural characteristics reminiscent of human synovial sarcoma in a dog. CASE PRESENTATION: A 7-year-old female spayed Tibetan terrier crossbred dog was presented for acute severe labored breathing and diagnosed with an intrathoracic neoplastic mass. The neoplasm resulted in the accumulation of substantial amounts of viscous pleural fluid

Synovial sarcoma, histologically mimicking primitive neuroectodermal tumor/Ewing's sarcoma at distant sites.

We report a case of synovial sarcoma (SS) showing unusual histology at distant sites. A 47-year-old man was aware of a tumor on the sole of his left foot. After preoperative chemotherapy with a diagnosis of SS, wide excision was performed. During postoperative chemotherapy, multiple tumorous lesions developed in the bone (including the whole spine) and both lungs. The patient died 1 year later. Histologically, the excised tumor of the foot showed a biphasic cellular pattern typical of SS, whereas at autopsy the bone and lung lesions were composed only of undifferentiated small round cells with

Bilateral corpus cavernosum thrombosis revealing penile synovial sarcoma.

Corpus cavernosum thrombosis is rare, and its association with penile malignancy is exceptionally uncommon. Although most penile cancers are squamous cell carcinomas, primary synovial sarcoma is exceedingly rare. We report a 36-year-old man with bilateral corpus cavernosum thrombosis and persistent perineal pain, managed conservatively for two years, during which imaging failed to identify a neoplasm. He later developed a rapidly enlarging penile mass with nodal involvement; total penectomy with lymphadenectomy confirmed synovial sarcoma. Early recurrence with metastatic progression required p

A case of primary tarsal sinus synovial sarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Primary intra-articular synovial sarcoma is a rare condition that is frequently misdiagnosed due to its indolent growth pattern and similarity to other common joint disorders. CASE PRESENTATION: A 48-year-old Chinese woman presented with a 3-year history of recurrent pain and limited mobility in her left ankle. She had previously been misdiagnosed with conditions such as ankle sprain, synovitis, or tarsal sinus syndrome. After undergoing arthroscopic synovectomy, pathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of synovial sarcoma. CONCLUSION: Primary intra-articular synovial sar

Pediatric tonsillar synovial sarcoma: extremely rare case report.

BACKGROUND: Synovial sarcoma (SS) is a malignant tumor characterized by partial epithelial differentiation. While SS predominantly affects older children and young adults, it can arise in nearly any anatomical region. Its occurrence in the tonsil, particularly in the pediatric population, is extremely rare, with only one other case reported in the literature. This rarity poses diagnostic challenges, as its symptoms often resemble more common conditions such as a peritonsillar abscess. Reporting such cases is crucial to expanding the understanding of SS, refining diagnostic approaches, and guid
