Dissecting cellulitis of the scalp.

Dissecting cellulitis of the scalp or perifolliculitis capitis abscedens et suffodiens is a rare, chronic, progressive, suppurative disease of the scalp of unknown etiology. It is characterized by painful nodules, purulent drainage, burrowing interconnecting abscesses, and cicatricial alopecia. The pathogenesis is unknown, although it is probably related to follicular occlusion, secondary infection, and deep inflammation. Black men in their second to fourth decade are predominantly affected. Treatment varies from systemic antibiotics to incision and drainage, x-ray epilation of the affected ar…

[Histiocytoid hemangioma of the scalp].

We report a case (the second from France) of histiocytoid haemangioma, an entity created by Rosai et al. (14) in 1979 to accommodate several cutaneous and extra-cutaneous diseases hitherto known under other names and characterized histologically by the proliferation of vessels with peculiar "histiocytoid" endothelial cells. Our patient was a 56-year old woman who developed, within a few weeks, a slightly haemorrhagic nodule of the scalp. The histological examination, performed in a private laboratory, led to a diagnosis of cavernous angioma or angioleiomyoma. Two months after the lesion was re…

Pilar tumor of the scalp.

An elderly woman presented with a large, fungating mass over the occipital portion of the scalp. Biopsy revealed this to be a pilar tumor of the scalp. The tumor was excised with a margin of normal tissue and the defect was closed with advancement of scalp and neck skin. Follow-up at 6 months revealed no recurrence of the lesion.

A pleomorphic lipoma in the scalp.

The pleomorphic lipoma is a benign neoplasm of lipocytes with atypical histologic features. The tumor shows a predilection for the region of the neck and shoulders of midde-aged and elderly men and must be differentiated from similar-appearing malignant entities such as liposarcoma and malignant myxoid fibrous histiocytoma. An occurrence of a pleomorphic lipoma in the scalp is reported and its histologic features described and discussed.

Malignant melanoma of the scalp.

Malignant melanoma of the scalp has a significantly worse prognosis than cutaneous melanoma arising in other head and neck sites. In this series, 125 patients were treated for Stage I invasive melanoma of the scalp and followed 3 to 19 years. Survival rates for these patients were calculated on the basis of several factors. Survival after treatment was not affected by the age and sex of the patient, size and site of the primary, or treatment of the primary lesion, although local failure was higher among those treated by primary excision and closure. Patients undergoing elective neck dissection…
