An anthropomorphic Rando phantom was used to compare radiation doses sustained during helical and conventional axial CT of the pelvis. The values obtained with the Rando phantom were validated against cadaveric phantoms, and show good agreement. For the authors' particular CT unit, helical scanning was found to deliver a lower radiation dose than conventional axial scanning. This was most prominent at 1.0-s tube rotation times (average dose ratio 1.24). For realistic scanning parameters and exposure factors, the ratio of radiation dose to pelvic organs can be expected to lie in the range of 40

The videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) is a recognized standard diagnostic imaging technique that is used to investigate swallowing disorders and dysphagia. Patients were assessed in a seated posture on a chair or wheelchair. Using X-ray fluoroscopy, the state of patients' swallowing was checked by eating and drinking according to the physician's instructions. VFSS procedures are prolonged, and VFSS staff members are exposed to radiation. Therefore, we evaluated original lead shielding device (OLSD) that can be attached to the handrail of a table and placed vertically. The OLSD has a le

OBJECTIVE: A dedicated extremity cone beam CT (CBCT) was introduced recently, and is rapidly becoming an attractive modality for extremity imaging. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a curtain-shaped lead shielding in reducing the exposure of patients to scattered radiation in dedicated extremity CBCT.
METHODS: A dedicated extremity CBCT scanner was used. The lead shielding curtain was 42 × 60 cm with 0.5-mm lead equivalent. Scattered radiation dose from CBCT was measured using thermoluminescence dosimetry chips at 20 points, at different distances and directions from the CT ga

Because of serious radiographic-induced skin injuries that may have been caused by the inappropriate use of fluoroscopy during the performance of radiograph-guided invasive procedures, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an advisory in 1994 suggesting that the key to preventing such unfortunate mishaps may be physician education, training, and credentialing in the safe operation of fluoroscopic equipment. The purpose of this article is to familiarize the interventional pain medicine physician with the physics of ionizing radiation and how to limit patient exposure through the opti

The analysis of individual particles with complex morphologies from light scattering is crucial in disperse systems studies, such as blood cells. Characterization, which assumes determining particle characteristics, has a higher likelihood of succeeding in solving the inverse light-scattering problem if an instrument provides enough light-scattering data. In this study, we demonstrate how we extend the operating angular interval for the 4π Scanning Flow Cytometer (4πSFC), which measures angle-resolved light-scattering profiles (LSPs) of individual particles. The angular interval is extended by

We investigate the far-field vectorial self-diffraction behavior of a cylindrical vector field passing though an optically thin Kerr medium. Theoretically, we obtain the analytical expression of the focal field of the cylindrical vector field with arbitrary integer topological charge based on the Fourier transform under the weak-focusing condition. Considering the additional nonlinear phase shift photoinduced by a self-focusing medium, we simulate the far-field vectorial self-diffraction patterns of the cylindrical vector field using the Huygens-Fresnel diffraction integral method. Experimenta

Diversified research interests in scanning laser microscopy nowadays require broadband capability of the optical system. Although an all-mirror-based optical design with a suitable metallic coating is appropriate for broad-spectrum applications from ultraviolet to terahertz, most researchers prefer lens-based scanning systems despite the drawbacks of a limited spectral range, ghost reflection, and chromatic aberration. One of the main concerns is that the geometrical aberration induced by off-axis incidence on spherical mirrors significantly deteriorates image resolution. Here, we demonstrate

In most scattering media, the scattering centers have random shapes and sizes, preventing any theoretical approach for the determination of their absorption and scattering coefficients. Three different experimental protocols are here selected and briefly described. The obtained values are compared and then validated from a comparison with the most rigorous method. The Kubelka-Munk method, using a paint layer applied to both white and black backgrounds, is chosen to build a database of these coefficients for reference pigments. Using this database, the identification of the components of a pigm

A new sort of matter wave with the general astigmatism is proposed, whose orientation of the phase front and the density profile are crossed. A generalized ABCD law is developed to treat the evolution of the general astigmatic matter wave. It is revealed that two "cylindrical lens" pulses with oblique orientations can bring general astigmatism to the matter wave. The evolution characteristics of the general astigmatic matter wave in the gravitational field is discussed and illustrated numerically in detail. It is found that the orientations of the density profile and the phase front of the mat

In this work small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) studies on the interaction of the phenothiazine trifluoperazine (TFP, 2-10 mM), a cationic drug, with micelles of the zwitterionic surfactant 3-(N-hexadecyl-N,N-dimethylammonium) propane sulfonate (HPS, 30 mM) and the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS, 40 mM) at pH 4.0, 7.0, and 9.0 are reported. The data were analyzed through the modeling of the micellar form factor and interference function, as well as by means of the distance distribution function p(r). For anionic micelles (SDS), the results evidence a micellar shape transformat

Optical properties determine how light interacts with biological tissues. The current methods for measuring these optical properties are influenced by both deep and superficial skin layers. Polarization-based methods have been proposed in order to determine the influence of deep layer scattering. Polarized light allows for the separation of ballistic photons from diffuse ones, enhancing image contrast and resolution while providing additional tissue information. The Q-sensing technique captures co-polarized I ∥ and cross-polarized I ⊥ signals, making it possible to isolate the su

Naftidrofuryl is a vasodilator medication used for treating cerebral and peripheral vascular diseases. In this study, two spectroscopical techniques, spectrofluorimetric and resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS), were utilized to quantify naftidrofuryl in its pharmaceutical samples. The developed methodologies in this study rely on a facile process of forming an association complex between erythrosine B reagent and naftidrofuryl under acidic conditions. The fluorimetric assay is based on the ability of naftidrofuryl to quench and decrease the native fluorescence intensity of the reagent when mea

We show in microwave experiments and random matrix calculations that in samples with a large number of channels the statistics of transmission for different incident channels relative to the average transmission is determined by a single parameter, the participation number of the eigenvalues of the transmission matrix, M. Its inverse, M(-1), is equal to the variance of relative total transmission of the sample, while the contrast in maximal focusing is equal to M. The distribution of relative total transmission changes from Gaussian to negative exponential over the range in which M(-1) changes

This paper introduces the path forward for the integration of freeform optical surfaces, particularly those related to φ-polynomial surfaces, including Zernike polynomial surfaces, with nodal aberration theory. With this formalism, the performance of an optical system throughout the field of view can be anticipated analytically accounting for figure error, mount-induced errors, and misalignment. Previously, only misalignments had been described by nodal aberration theory, with the exception of one special case for figure error. As an example of these new results, three point mounting error tha

Efficacy in the diagnosis of hereditary spherocytosis (HS) using a system of dual-angle differential light scattering of a monochromatic laser beam on sphere-shaped and fixed erythrocytes was evaluated. Fifty-one nonsplenectomized patients with HS, 6 with autoimmune hemolytic anemia, and 140 control subjects were studied. The percentage of erythrocytes with hemoglobin concentration more than 410 g/L (hyperhemoglobin) was significantly different in patients with HS and control subjects (P < 0.001). Hyperhemoglobin could be detected even in the mildest HS, in all patients with autoimmune hemolyt

Irradiated cells can signal damage and distress to both close and distant neighbors that have not been directly exposed to the radiation (naïve bystanders). While studies have shown that such bystander effects occur in the shielded brain of animals upon body irradiation, their mechanism remains unexplored. Observed effects may be caused by some blood-borne factors; however they may also be explained, at least in part, by very small direct doses received by the brain that result from scatter or leakage. In order to establish the roles of low doses of scatter irradiation in the brain response, w

Non-coding RNA fragments (ncRFs) are small RNA fragments processed from non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs). ncRFs have various functions and are commonly tissue-specific, and their processing is altered by exposure to stress. Information about ncRFs in the brain is scarce. Recently, we reported the brain region-specific and sex-specific expression of ncRNAs and their processing into ncRFs. Here, we analyzed the expression of ncRFs in the frontal cortex (FC), hippocampus (HIP), and cerebellum (CER) of male and female rats exposed to scatter radiation. We found multiple brain region- and sex-specific chan

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the effectiveness of scatter radiation reduction with the EggNest Complete shielding system compared to standard catheterization laboratory shielding.
METHODS: Vertical poles with mounted radiation survey meters were positioned at six points around a catheterization laboratory imaging table where procedural staff usually stand. Meters were mounted on vertical tracks where the sensor could be raised on the track with stops every 20 cm (up to 200 cm). Fluoroscopy (15 frames per second) was then performed on an anthropomorphic phantom with a cardiac silhouette in

BACKGROUND: Despite recent improvements in radiation safety, interventionalists are increasingly exposed to radiation during cardiac catheterization laboratory (CCL) procedures. The RADPAD was designed as a protective scatter-radiation absorbing shield with the goal of reducing scatter radiation. Early studies demonstrated between a 20 and 62 % relative reduction in scatter radiation. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of the RADPAD through a randomized controlled trial in a large contemporary CCL.
DESIGN: The ATTENUATE (v) Trial is an investigator-initiated, prospective, ran

Mobile X-ray examinations in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) are essential for the critically ill neonates. However, scattered radiation generated during imaging can lead to unnecessary radiation exposure for adjacent neonates and healthcare workers. Conventional mobile shielding devices are often challenging to implement effectively in NICU environments due to limited space and workflow constraints. Consequently, this study developed a foldable lead curtain that can be attached to a mobile X-ray unit and evaluated experimental measurements and Monte Carlo simulations. The lead curtain f
