Publishing important work that lacks validity or reproducibility - pushing frontiers or corrupting science?

Scientific research requires objectivity, impartiality and stringency. However, scholarly literature is littered with preliminary and explorative findings that lack reproducibility or validity. Some low-quality papers with perceived high impact have become publicly notable. The collective effort of fellow researchers who follow these false leads down blind alleys and impasses is a waste of time and resources, and this is particularly damaging for early career researchers. Furthermore, the lay public might also be affected by socioeconomic repercussions associated with the findings. It is argua

Environmental sustainability of clinical laboratories: A scoping review.

IntroductionThe climate crisis presents a complex and growing challenge for healthcare systems around the world. Healthcare systems can contribute to substantial global emissions, with the UK's National Health Service (NHS) alone responsible for 4%-5% of the country's total carbon footprint. A wide range of clinical disciplines have already begun to assess and design interventions to tackle this issue. However, clinical and diagnostic laboratories remain underexplored.AimsWhat studies have been undertaken to assess and improve the environmental impact of clinical laboratories?MethodsThis scopi

How Academic Medicine Can Amplify Truth Amid the Noise of Misinformation, Inaccuracies, and Lies.

Inaccurate statements and lies from public figures and political and government leaders have the power to exacerbate dangerous upheavals in our political, health care, and social environments. The widespread misinformation, inaccuracies, and lies about the COVID-19 pandemic (about the origin of the virus, the severity of illness, vaccination, and "cures," to name a few) illustrate the potentially disastrous consequences of false information. Academic medicine must recognize the dangers of such lies and inaccuracies, particularly those related to health, and must understand their sources in tra

Understanding Air in the Body: A Radiologic Perspective on Emphysematous and Traumatic Conditions.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal collections of air within body tissues and anatomical compartments, although relatively uncommon, represent critical radiologic findings. The causative factors vary from invasive infections by gas-forming organisms to traumatic and iatrogenic breaches of tissue planes. Early and accurate radiologic identification is essential, as delayed diagnosis may result in significant morbidity and mortality. The study objective is to describe the spectrum of computed tomography (CT) imaging features, etiopathogenesis, and clinical significance of some emphysematous infections, includ

"Care About us First": Israeli Youths' Perspectives on Child Neglect.

Child neglect is considered the most common form of child maltreatment with severe implications for children's development. Nonetheless, there is a dearth of scholarly literature examining child neglect, possibly stemming from a lack of consistent definition. The current qualitative study addresses this gap by aiming to understand the phenomena of child neglect from the direct perspective of youth from the general population, a perspective that has so far barely been considered. Data were collected by 10 focus groups conducted among multicultural youth aged 12 to 15 years in the north of Israe

Augmentative and Alternative Communication Course Design and Features: A Survey of Expert Faculty and Instructors.

PURPOSE: Multiple surveys have been used to investigate augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) coursework offered in speech-language pathology programs in the last 3 decades. These studies primarily explored the availability of AAC courses and reported a limited number of course characteristics. Because few studies to date have specifically examined the AAC course design, the purpose of this study was to investigate the design and features of AAC coursework, such as learning objectives, course content, assignments, and readings and resources, currently taught in the United States. Against nature: The experiences of parents caring for an adult child with young-onset dementia.

BackgroundYoung-onset dementia (YOD), diagnosed before age 65, most often appears as Alzheimer's disease (AD) or frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Compared to late-onset dementia (LOD), YOD poses distinct caregiving, emotional, and social challenges. While research has expanded, it has largely centered on spouses and children, leaving the experiences of parents caring for an adult child with YOD underexplored and in need of greater scholarly attention.ObjectiveThis study aims to investigate the unique experiences of parents caring for an adult child diagnosed with YOD.MethodsQualitative semi-stru

Gender, sexuality and cis-heteropatriarchal parental control: navigating the politics of neo-panopticon and the resilience of young Khawaja Sara and Hijra in Peshawar, Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Scholarly works have extensively explored the marginalized positions of transgender individuals in Pakistan. However, there is a noticeable gap in literature concerning the profound impact of cis-heteropatriarchal parental control on young Khawaja Sara and Hijra individuals-members of the transgender community-particularly when they reside in their parental homes in Peshawar, Pakistan. AIM: Grounded in Foucault's panopticon concept, this study seeks to illuminate the pervasive surveillance experienced by young Khawaja Sara and Hijra within the confines of their familial environmen

Networked Mentorship and Cultural Integration: Understanding Indigenous Motivation and Persistence in STEM.

Indigenous scholars remain severely underrepresented across STEM disciplines, particularly at the faculty level. To address these challenges, the Advancing Indigenous Science and Engineering Society (AISES) developed the Lighting the Pathway to Faculty Careers (LTP) program, a culturally relevant mentorship initiative supporting Indigenous scholars' persistence and success in STEM. This cross-sectional study examined how participation in the LTP program shapes scholars' experiences of support, identity integration, and career intentions. Results showed that scholars who endorsed both STEM and

To Be FAIR: Theory Specification Needs an Update.

Open science innovations have focused on rigorous theory testing, yet methods for specifying, sharing, and iteratively improving theories remain underdeveloped. To address this limitation, we introduce FAIR theory, a standard for specifying theories as findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable digital objects. FAIR theories are findable in well-established archives; accessible in terms of their availability and ability to be understood; interoperable for specific purposes, such as selecting control variables; and reusable in that they can be iteratively and collaboratively improved on.

Identifying Predatory Journals: A Practical Guide for Researchers.

Predatory journals are unethical publications that exploit researchers by charging fees without providing proper peer review or editorial oversight. They pose a serious threat to the integrity of scholarly communication, prioritizing profit over scholarship and disregarding ethical standards, which results in the dissemination of research that lacks quality and credibility. This guide offers researchers a practical framework to identify and avoid such deceptive publications, thereby protecting academic integrity and professional reputation. Key indicators of predatory journals include poor vis

Reclaiming the writing process using AI: a scaffolded writing assignment that promotes critical thinking, reflection, and accountability.

As the educational landscape changes with the widespread use of generative artificial intelligence (AI), we have made the deliberate choice to adapt with intention through the constructive integration of this tool within the curriculum. Writing assignments are often vulnerable to AI shortcuts, and therefore, we reimagined the project in our online microbiology lab to incorporate AI in a structured and pedagogically sound way that prioritizes both the writing process and the final product. Students must work with AI to create a script for a 5-minute video which they then illustrate and record o

Working memory and aided AAC display design options for students with intellectual disabilities.

Working memory (WM) plays an important role when using external communication aids. Various stimuli can be utilized to reduce one's cognitive load when selecting symbols on a grid display. The current empirical findings concerning the benefits of such aids for children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities are inconclusive. This study seeks to fill this gap in scholarly research by investigating the relationship between WM and different stimuli to identify effective grid designs. The sample consists of 80 students who completed a series of WM tasks before being assigned a specific grid
