BACKGROUND: Pulmonary hypertension in infantile scimitar syndrome is highly prevalent at diagnosis, and has a multifactorial origin.
AIMS: To analyse the constellation of anatomical anomalies and initial physiology, and their contribution to pulmonary hypertension and outcome in infantile scimitar syndrome.
METHODS: Pulmonary hypertension causes were classified into five categories: associated with systemic supply to the right lung; associated with left-to-right shunt; postcapillary; related to respiratory or developmental lung disease; and "idiopathic-like" pulmonary arterial hypertension. …

Horseshoe lung is a congenital pulmonary malformation that is usually associated with scimitar syndrome. This malformation consists of fusion of both pulmonary lobes from the posterobasal segments. The fusion appears in the retrocardiac area, in front of the esophagus and thoracic aorta. Pleural separation of pulmonary lobes distinguishes pseudohorseshoe appearance from a true horseshoe lung. Scimitar syndrome known as hypogenetic lung syndrome is a part of the congenital pulmonary venolobar syndrome. It is a partial anomalous pulmonary venous return with pulmonary hypoplasia. Scimitar vein is…

A combination of two rare malformations of the lung was observed in a four-year-old asymptomatic boy. He had typical scimitar syndrome (dextrocardia, hypoplastic right lung and right-sided anomalous pulmonary venous drainage into the v. cava inferior) together with horseshoe lung. Diagnosis was established by angiocardiography and computerized tomography. In the absence of recurrent pulmonary infections operative intervention is not necessary with normal pulmonary arterial pressure and resistance. To the best of our knowledge this case with both malformations seems to be the fourth which is re…

Partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection (PAPVC) is defined to exist when some but not all venous drainage enters the left atrium, while the remaining veins connect to the right-sided circulation. Scimitar syndrome is a specialized example, in which an anomalous pulmonary vein descends from the right lung and drains into the inferior caval vein. PAPVC is associated with sinus venosus-type atrial septal defect (ASD). Diagnosis was, in the past, based on echocardiographic imaging and could be difficult. Multislice spiral computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging improved the imagin…

INTRODUCTION: Scimitar Syndrome is a relatively rare variety of partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection in which the right pulmonary veins form an anomalous confluence which drains into the infra-diaphragmatic inferior vena cava. The X-ray chest in these patients shows the typical Scimitar Sign.
CASE REPORT: We are presenting a patient who was diagnosed to have Scimitar Syndrome on the basis of X-ray chest and echocardiography. Confirmation of diagnosis and precise anatomical characterization was achieved by 64 slice CT angiocardiography. The patient underwent successful surgical correc…

It is a retrospective study of 7 patients with clinical and echocardiographic assessment, the last was correlated with morphologic features … ery. The correlation shows agreement between the echocardiographic image and the anatomic specimen. Scimitar syndrome is a rare entity, which diagnosis and follow up can be performed by echocardiography in a great percentage (86%). The embryologic basis of this syndrome is enhanced.

OBJECTIVE: The scimitar syndrome is a congenital anomaly that consists in part of total or partial anomalous venous drainage of the right lung to the inferior vena cava. Surgical approaches to the scimitar syndrome have varied according to the anatomic and pathologic features presented in each case. The aim of this study was to present an alternative approach to the surgical correction of scimitar syndrome.
METHODS: Nine patients with the scimitar syndrome were operated on between 1990 and 2000. They comprised 1 male and 8 female patients (mean age 11.5 +/- 17.6 years). All patients had sympt…

A male infant presenting with severe heart failure and respiratory distress was diagnosed with a hypoplastic right lung, scimitar syndrome with pulmonary sequestration and multiple anomalous systemic arteries, left bronchomalacia, a large atrial septal defect and coarctation of the aorta. The infant underwent a successful combined treatment of surgical and transcatheter intervention, including coil embolization and endobronchial stenting.

The authors describe a case of scimitar syndrome, which is a rare congenital lung abnormality characterized by partially anomalous pulmonary venous return. MRI findings as well as other methods of diagnosis are discussed.

Scimitar syndrome is a rare congenital cardiopulmonary anomaly; it is also called venolobar syndrome, hypogenic lung syndrome, and Halasz syndrome. The syndrome is characterized by cardiac dextroposition, right lung and pulmonary artery hypoplasia as well as complete or partial anomalous pulmonary venous drainage of the right lung. We report a case of a 22-month-old full-term male child with a severe form of scimitar syndrome diagnosed at birth. The X-ray demonstrated dextrocardia and right lung hypoplasia, while the echocardiography clearly illustrated the scimitar vein. The patient had multi…

UNLABELLED: The Scimitar syndrome or pulmonary venolobar syndrome is a rare, complex and variable congenital anomaly of cardiopulmonary development characterised by an abnormal right-sided pulmonary venous drainage in the inferior vena cava, malformation of the right lung, abnormal arterial supply and sometimes cardiac malformations. These serious anomalies notwithstanding, their presentation is varied, ranging from asymptomatic to severe symptoms, particularly in the neonatal and early infantile period. Some symptomatic cases are misdiagnosed as recurrent lower respiratory tract infections or…

Scimitar syndrome is a rare congenital abnormality resulting from right-sided pulmonary venous return to the inferior vena cava rather than to the left atrium. It is usually detected in early childhood with symptoms of recurrent chest infection and finding of pulmonary hypertension due to left to right shunt. We report a case of a 40-year-old woman with scimitar syndrome discovered on chest X-ray during evaluation of recurrent pneumonia. Surgical correction was achieved with a novel technique of using a synthetic graft connecting the scimitar vein across the right atrium to the left atrium alo…

Scimitar syndrome is a rare congenital cardiopulmonary anomaly. We describe a 1.5-year-old boy with this uncommon malformation and an unusual hepatic venous drainage, which allows atypical surgical repair.
