Chronic Disease Monitoring: Methodology for Classification Error and Self-Selection Bias Correction in Clinical Laboratory Data.

Background/Objectives: Chronic diseases are among the leading causes of morbidity and healthcare costs worldwide. Diabetes mellitus is one o … limitations, quantified through confusion matrices derived from longitudinal records; and (2) self-selection bias from differential testing rates, estimated empirically by demographic segment. Demographic reweighting ensured representativeness with respect to census data. Results: Using diabetes as a test case, corrected estimates for 2024 showed an adult preva …

Potential Channeling Bias in the Evaluation of Cardiovascular Risk: The Importance of Comparator Selection in Observational Research.

BACKGROUND: Comparator selection is an important consideration in the design of observational research studies that evaluate potential associations between drug therapies and adverse event risks. It can affect the validity of observational study results, and potentially impact data interpretation, regulatory decision making, and patient medication access. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the impact of comparator selection bias using two real-world case studies evaluating an increased rate of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). METHODS: Data from the Truven Health Analytics Marke…

Hemiarthroplasty or Total Hip Arthroplasty: Is There a Racial Bias in Treatment Selection for Femoral Neck Fractures?

INTRODUCTION: Hip fractures in the elderly individuals are associated with significant morbidity and mortality, and outcomes are directly related to prompt surgical intervention with either total hip arthroplasty (THA) or hemiarthroplasty. Minority hip fracture patients have increased delays to surgical intervention and poorer functional outcomes. This study explored racial biases in the surgical treatment decision between THA and hemiarthroplasty for displaced femoral neck fractures as well as racial disparities in postoperative complications, readmission rates, and 30-day mortality. METHODS

Influence of Referral Pathway on Ebola Virus Disease Case-Fatality Rate and Effect of Survival Selection Bias.

Case-fatality rates in Ebola treatment centers (ETCs) varied widely during the Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in West Africa. We assesse … ite (p = 0.02). The difference was mediated by Ebola viral load at diagnosis, suggesting a survival selection bias. Comparisons of case-fatality rates across ETCs and clinical management strategies should account for potential survival selection bias.

Correcting for publication bias in multivariate and multilevel meta-analysis: A multivariate step function selection model approach.

Univariate meta-analysis models assume that all effect sizes are independent. This assumption is violated if, for example, two outcomes are reported in a study of interest to the meta-analyst or a study reports multiple experiments administered by the same researchers. The multivariate and multilevel meta-analysis models allow modeling dependent effect sizes. These two models have recently gained in popularity among meta-analysts in psychology, where one of the largest threats to validity of meta-analysis is publication bias where a selective subset of studies remain unpublished. We extend the

Selection bias introduced in a randomized clinical trial due to employee instigated deletion of newborn resuscitation videos.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluating if employee instigated deletion of newborn resuscitation videos resulted in selection bias compromising the validity of the NeoBeat trial. METHOD: The NeoBeat randomized clinical trial was conducted at Stavanger University Hospital, Norway, to evaluate if continuously displayed ECG heart rate starting from birth resulted in a higher proportion of treated newborns receiving ventilation within 60 s. Videos of resuscitations were used to evaluate time to ventilation. Employees could request deletion of videos by e-mail. Halfway through the trial, protests over video recordi…

Reconstructing a Pregnancy Cohort to Examine Potential Selection Bias in Studies on Racial Disparities in Preterm Delivery.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic studies examining preconception risk factors on perinatal outcomes are typically restricted to livebirths. By including only non-terminated pregnancies, estimates for the underlying pregnancy cohort may be subject to selection bias. We examined if potential selection bias due to induced termination by maternal race may result in different estimates of the non-Hispanic black - non-Hispanic white risk ratio (RR) for preterm delivery (PTD) among a reconstructed pregnancy cohort ('pseudo-pregnancy cohort'). METHODS: Using New York City registries of 1.6 million livebirth…

Confirmation bias through selective readout of information encoded in human parietal cortex.

Decision-makers often process new evidence selectively, depending on their current beliefs about the world. We asked whether such confirmation biases result from biases in the encoding of sensory evidence in the brain, or alternatively in the utilization of encoded evidence for behavior. Human participants estimated the source of a sequence of visual-spatial evidence samples while we measured cortical population activity with magnetoencephalography. Halfway through the sequence, participants were prompted to judge the more likely source category. We find that processing of subsequent evidence

Anion-exchange facilitated selective extraction of sulfate and phosphate by overcoming the Hofmeister bias.

Selective recognition and removal of sulfate and phosphates from aqueous media in the presence of highly competing anions is very demanding because of their biological and environmental implications. In this paper, we present the anion recognition approach for the selective and efficient extraction of sulfate by nitrophenyl-functionalized tris-urea receptors (L1-L2) from highly competitive aqueous media with an equivalent concentration of nitrate and other anions. Tetrabutylammonium hydroxide has been used for the first time as a phase transfer anionic extractant for sulfate-exchange from the

Direct comparison of contralateral bias and face/scene selectivity in human occipitotemporal cortex.

Human visual cortex is organised broadly according to two major principles: retinotopy (the spatial mapping of the retina in cortex) and category-selectivity (preferential responses to specific categories of stimuli). Historically, these principles were considered anatomically separate, with retinotopy restricted to the occipital cortex and category-selectivity emerging in the lateral-occipital and ventral-temporal cortex. However, recent studies show that category-selective regions exhibit systematic retinotopic biases, for example exhibiting stronger activation for stimuli presented in the c

Orbitofrontal cortex is selectively activated in a primate model of attentional bias to cocaine cues.

Attentional bias to drug-associated cues correlates with extent of current use, and risk of relapse among those attempting abstinence. Electroencephalogram (EEG) and functional imaging measures in clinical studies have previously investigated the neural basis of attentional bias, but the lack of animal models precluded investigation at the single-unit level. To complement results obtained from clinical studies, we have employed a non-human primate model of attentional bias to cocaine cues while simultaneously recording single-unit activity in cortical and striatal regions implicated in reward

Testing for validity and bias in the use of GPA and the MCAT in the selection of medical school students.

In the 1988 study reported here, Medical College Admissions test (MCAT) scores and grade point averages for undergraduate science courses (S-GPAs) were examined for predictive validity and differential prediction of National Board of Medical Examiners Part I scores. Data from 579 medical students from the classes of 1979-80 through 1983-84 attending a midwestern medical college were analyzed via moderated multiple regression. The findings indicated that using the S-GPA and a composite MCAT score based on the Biology Knowledge, Chemistry Knowledge, Physics Knowledge, Science Problems, and Readi

Comparative mitochondrial genomics of Ophiocordycipitaceae fungi reveals AT bias and site-specific positive selection in the nad4 gene.

The fungal family Ophiocordycipitaceae (Hypocreales, Ascomycota) includes the medicinally important Ophiocordyceps sinensis. However, comparative mitogenomic analyses remain limited. Here, we analyzed mitochondrial genomes from 18 species spanning Ophiocordyceps, Cordyceps sensu stricto, Beauveria, Tolypocladium, and three outgroups, using maximum-likelihood phylogenetics (GTR + F + R3, 1000 ultrafast bootstraps), codon-usage analysis, and site-specific selection pressure estimation. Genome sizes ranged 20.7-272.5 kb (~ 13-fold), with low GC content (mean GC = 27.7%). Codon usage showed modera

Assessment of control selection bias in a hospital-based case-control study of upper aero-digestive tract cancers.

BACKGROUND: Most of the evidence identifying determinants of UADT cancer risk comes from hospital-based case-control studies. However, such studies are thought to be influenced by selection bias given the extent of association of tobacco smoking and alcohol drinking with other diseases in the general population. We assessed the extent of selection bias due to inclusion of controls with tobacco or alcohol related diseases in a hospital-based case-control study of upper aero-digestive tract (UADT) cancers in Brazil. METHODS: Risk factor information was obtained from 784 cases and 1568 non-cance…

Correcting for selection bias in HIV prevalence estimates: an application of sample selection models using data from population-based HIV surveys in seven sub-Saharan African countries.

INTRODUCTION: Population-based biomarker surveys are the gold standard for estimating HIV prevalence but are susceptible to substantial non-participation (up to 30%). Analytical missing data methods, including inverse-probability weighting (IPW) and multiple imputation (MI), are biased when data are missing-not-at-random, for example when people living with HIV more frequently decline participation. Heckman-type selection models can, under certain assumptions, recover unbiased prevalence estimates in such scenarios. METHODS: We pooled data from 142,706 participants aged 15-49 years from natio

Relationship Between Level of American Football Playing and Diagnosis of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy in a Selection Bias Analysis.

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a neurodegenerative disease associated with exposure to repetitive head impacts such as those from American football. Our understanding of this association is based on research in autopsied brains, since CTE can only be diagnosed postmortem. Such studies are susceptible to selection bias, which needs to be accounted for to ensure a generalizable estimate of the association between repetitive head impacts and CTE. We evaluated the relationship between level of American football playing and CTE diagnosis after adjusting for selection bias. The sample inc…

CONCLUSIONS: Selection bias in female RDD controls resulted from differential participation by socioeconomic factors, varied with age, and produced underestimations of several associations in young women, including reproductive factors. Differential functional selectivity and downstream signaling bias of ghrelin receptor antagonists and inverse agonists.

The ghrelin receptor [growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR)-1a] represents a promising pharmacologic target for the treatment of metabolic disorders, including obesity and cachexia, via central appetite modulation. The GHSR-1a has a complex pharmacology, highlighted by G-protein-dependent and -independent downstream signaling pathways and high basal constitutive activity. The functional selectivity and signaling bias of many GHSR-1a-specific ligands has not been fully characterized. In this study, we investigated the pharmacologic properties of ghrelin, MK-0677, L692,585, and [d-Lys3]-gr
