Support groups can create environments that are conducive to healing and well-being, particularly for persons with stigmatizing chronic diseases. OBJECTIVE: Gambling-related harms can have a significant negative impact on disordered gamblers, lower risk gamblers, and affected others. Yet, most disordered and lower risk gamblers will never seek formal treatment, often due to the stigma and shame surrounding gambling. Online self-help forums are a popular alternative way for gamblers to anonymously seek help from others. The Hearing Voices (HV) Movement promotes diverse understandings of voice-hearing and seeing visions, which mental health professionals commonly refer to as 'auditory hallucinations,' 'schizophrenia,' or 'psychosis.' PURPOSE: Many people with scleroderma rely on peer-led support groups as a coping resource. Reasons for not attending support groups in scleroderma have been investigated only in North American participants. This study assesses reasons for nonattendance in European countries and compares results with previously published North American findings.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The same 21-item survey as used in the North American sample assessed possible reasons for not attending scleroderma support groups. Proportions of items rated Important or Very Important were compared between samples.
