OBJECTIVE: To establish the animal model of triple semicircular canal occlusion(TCO) in guinea pigs.
METHODS: TCO was performed on 20 guinea pigs. Electronystagmography, auditory brainstem responses (ABR) and distortion product otoacoustic emissions(DPOAE) were recorded pre- and post-operatively. The non-operated ear was used as control.
RESULTS: There was spontaneous nystagmus towards non-operated side on the 1st postoperative day and no nystagmus to stimuli of sinusoidal angular acceleration in operated side. On the 30th postoperative day, left and right nystagmus returned symmetrical. Pre

Audiologic and histopathologic examinations were made after occlusion of the lateral semicircular canal in eight guinea pigs. The lateral semicircular canal was drilled out, and then the canal lumens were plugged with muscle pieces. After a serial recording of auditory brain stem responses for 2 months, histologic specimens of the temporal bones were prepared in the lateral semicircular canal plane. One animal developed profound hearing loss due to suppurative labyrinthitis. The other seven animals showed no significant threshold elevation during this period. Histopathologic examination reveal

This report outlines our experience with posterior semicircular canal occlusion, a new operative procedure for intractable benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). We postulate that the resulting solid canal "plug" prevents endolymph movement within the posterior canal, which effectively fixes the cupula. This selectively abolishes the receptivity of the posterior canal to both angular acceleration and gravity without influencing the other inner ear receptors. We previously reported the success of this procedure in two patients with BPPV and a co-existing profound sensorineural hearing los

Histamine and other imidazole-containing substances were found to increase ampullar nerve afferent firing rate while both H1 and H2 histamine antagonists effectively inhibited ampullar nerve activity. A specific inhibitor of histidine decarboxylase, the enzyme which catalyses the synthesis of histamine, reduced ampullar nerve firing in a dose-dependent manner. These observations suggest a physiological role for histamine in the inner ear. Maintenance of a response to histamine after de-efferentation of the crista ampullaris supports the hypothesis that the site of action is the hair cell; anta

OBJECTIVE: The apparent effect of superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) on middle ear- and cochlear impedance has led researchers to investigate the use of wideband acoustic immittance as a screening tool when SSCD is suspected. The purpose of the study was to describe the absorbance characteristics and tympanometric values of ears with confirmed SSCD measured at tympanometric peak pressure (TPP) and at ambient pressure.
METHODS: Wideband Acoustic Immittance was performed at ambient pressure and at TPP on ten participants (12 ears) with confirmed SSCD, as well as on an age- and gender

BACKGROUND: Intractable benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) may be treated by plugging the affected semicircular canal (SCC). A cochlear implant (CI) can diminish subjective symptoms of tinnitus. We present a case with intractable BPPV and incapacitating tinnitus who underwent surgery, simultaneously plugging his posterior SCC (PSCC) and implanting an ipsilateral CI.
CASE: A 50-year-old male experienced single-sided deafness (SSD) with severe ipsilateral tinnitus, and intractable BPPV related to the ipsilateral PSCC. Two years earlier, he had been treated with a bone anchored hearing

Posterior semicircular canal dehiscence is a rare condition and can cause a variety of symptoms. We report three cases of children between 5 and 12 years of age with a PSCD. They all presented with different complaints as follows: Tullio phenomenon in the first case, conductive hearing loss in the second and, conductive hearing loss and pulsatile tinnitus in the third. Imaging showed in all cases a PSCD on the right side, caused by a prominent jugular bulb (high riding bulb). We describe the clinical, audiometric and radiological findings, and discuss the management and therapy. A conservative

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to determine whether sex and age influence posterior semicircular canal (PSC) thickness.
METHODS: This observational study was conducted in 3 tertiary hospitals. The minimal distance between the PSC and the posterior cranial fossa (PSC thickness) was estimated by thin-section multidetector row computed axial tomography (CAT) scan of the temporal bones. Nonselected consecutive patients of all ages (607 temporal bones) were considered.
RESULTS: A significant effect was only detected for sex (F = 5.418, p = 0.020); PSC thickness showed a higher mean value in

Semicircular canal dehiscence is an important entity often presenting with symptoms of noise or pressure induced vertigo, autophony, aural fullness and conductive hearing loss. Due to its varied presentation and mimic of other otologic conditions its consideration is of increased importance. Within we report a case of right sided posterior semicircular canal dehiscence secondary to an enlarged and high jugular bulb. The results of this observation indicate a need for patients with auditory symptoms and high riding jugular bulbs to be evaluated for possible posterior semicircular canal dehiscen

BACKGROUND: Superior semicircular canal dehiscence is a recently described cause of imbalance, hearing loss, and tinnitus. Symptoms may begin after abrupt changes in intracranial or middle ear pressure.
CASE: This patient presented with a 6-year history of imbalance, hearing loss, and pulsatile tinnitus beginning when she was pushing during labor. A temporal-bone computed tomography scan showed a dehiscence of the superior semicircular canal. Surgical repair of the dehiscence through the middle cranial fossa resulted in immediate resolution of the patient's symptoms, and she returned to full

OBJECTIVE: Assesment of 8 new cases of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo of the horizontal semicircular canal (BPPV-HC), since this variant of benign positional vertigo occurs rarely. An oculographic study of features in the positional response was carried out. Electrooculograpy (EOG) allows an exhaustive study of positional nystagmus.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We have studied retrospectively 8 patients with BPPV-HC and positive head rotation manoeuvre registered by EOG techniques. Possible alterations in other EOG tests in the group of patients were analyzed.
RESULTS: Most of the patients (7

We report on the presentation and clinical manifestations of superior semicircular canal dehiscence in association with a large defect of the tegmen tympani in a 41-year-old woman with no previous history of trauma. Based on this case we recommend that clinicians consider the possibility of superior semicircular canal dehiscence in patients presenting with symptoms associated with tegmen defects.
