Blood from a Stone: A Rough Guide for Group Therapy Implementation in Community Mental Healthcare.

Despite its demonstrated efficacy, group therapy remains underutilized in community mental health centers (CMHCs), where structural barriers and a chronic shortfall of funds impede implementation. This article examines the disconnect between academic research and the financial, organizational, and policy constraints that shape care in safety-net settings. Drawing from direct experience at a CMHC serving marginalized populations, we offer a financial analysis that illustrates how current reimbursement models create steep challenges for sustaining group therapy. Guided by domain theory, we prese

A Universal Gd3+-based hydrogel matrix for inducing room-temperature phosphorescence.

Room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) is difficult to achieve in aqueous media, due to the inherent and serious quenching of the excited triplet states by O2 and H2O. Herein, we report RTP induction enabled by a hydrogel matrix assembled from Gd3+ and adenosine monophosphate (AMP). Benefiting from the promoted intersystem crossing (ISC), effective guest confinement, and excellent oxygen shielding, the Gd3+-AMP hydrogel permitted efficient RTP emission from guest molecules. Notably, second-scale afterglow (>1 s) was observed from the thioflavin T (ThT)-encapsulated hydrogel, which has rarely b

Spinal-inspired artificial tactile interneuron with high-order burst spiking for intelligent edge interfaces.

Human tactile perception relies on hierarchical processing, where inputs entering the nervous system are fused by interneurons for sparse multimodal encoding, and the integrated signals are sent to the brain to generate perception. Replicating this pathway from primary sensory inputs to higher-order neural processing, which efficiently transforms signals into coherent representations of the external environment, is essential for artificial tactile systems. Here we present artificial multimodal interneuron (AMINs) by integrating strain, pressure, and temperature sensors with NbOx memristor neur

Model for computing with population-encoded variables explains neural correlations.

Decoding how the brain computes with variables, such as an object's speed, encoded in populations of neurons is essential for understanding perception, decision-making, and motor control. While experiments consistently reveal correlated firing rates within these populations, the origins of these correlations are still debated. Here, I propose a computational model that carries out operations on population-encoded variables by carefully configuring the connections between neurons through dendritic branches. This model predicts neural correlations as a byproduct of the computation, with correlat

Endovascular Embolization of Sinonasal Tumors: A Report of Two Cases and a Technical Review.

Hypervascular sinonasal tumors frequently cause recurrent epistaxis and pose a risk of significant intraoperative bleeding during resection. Preoperative embolization can improve operative visualization and safety; however, optimal technical strategies remain incompletely defined, particularly regarding embolic particle size and adjunctive flow-control techniques. We describe a structured preoperative embolization approach for two patients with hypervascular sinonasal tumors. In both cases, superselective microcatheterization of sphenopalatine artery feeders was performed after confirming the

Lightweight multiscale behavior recognition for caged laying hens using an enhanced YOLOv8 framework.

This study presents a lightweight deep-learning framework for recognizing key health-related behaviors of caged laying hens, addressing the challenges of dense housing, frequent occlusions, and subtle action differences. Building upon YOLOv8n (serving as our base model), we introduce three major enhancements: (1) a C2f-FasterNet-EMA backbone that improves multiscale feature extraction; (2) a FasterNet-based neck combined with the Dysample upsampler to refine small-object localization while reducing computational cost; (3) an EMASlideLoss function that alleviates sample imbalance and stabilizes

A novel mineral-organic bone adhesive promotes calvarial bone regeneration in microgravity conditions.

Microgravity significantly impacts astronaut physiology, causing accelerated bone loss and impairing bone regeneration. As human space exploration expands, effective and minimally invasive bone repair treatments are crucial. In this study, we investigated the regenerative potential of a novel mineral-organic bone adhesive, Tetranite® (TN), compared to the osteoinductive rhBMP2 (Infuse®). We used a critical-size calvarial bone defect model in mice, with half launched on a 60-day mission to the International Space Station and the other half serving as ground controls. Ultrafine metal nanoparticles isolated on oxide nano-islands as exceptional sintering-resistant catalysts.

Ultrafine nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted extensive research interest, especially in heterogeneous catalysis. However, the inherent sintering propensity of NPs has been a major obstacle to their catalytic stability. Here we report an isolation strategy to preserve highly dispersed ultrafine NPs under extremely harsh conditions. Oxide nano-islands were grafted between the catalyst support and metal NPs, serving as a general approach by following a charge attraction principle. Specifically, LaOx nano-islands were ideally suited for stabilizing Ru NPs among the synthetic library, exhibiting st

An alternative approach in the treatment of thumb web contracture skin defects: lateral tarsal artery flap.

BACKGROUND: Thumb web contracture is a common complication after hand injury, and can markedly affect whole hand function. Therefore, surgery involving thumb web reconstruction is often necessary to restore normal function of the involved hand. In this study, we present the application of the lateral tarsal artery (LTA) flap in first web reconstruction. METHODS: From November 1, 2005 to October 31, 2007, seven patients with severe post trauma or burn contractures around the first web space were treated with a LTA flap. All the patients were followed up. RESULTS: All flaps survived, with an a

[Changes in human biliary vesicle sizes in pathological states].

Changes in the sizes of aggregates of bile vesicles at various nucleation factors were studied by the method of dynamic spectroscopy. It was found that the sizes of bile vesicles in chronic cholecystitis vary from 90 to 200 nm. It was shown that the presence of a large fraction of bile vesicles characterized by a higher cholesterol concentration can serve as a criterion of acuteness of cholecystitis and the intensity of lithogenesis.

Effect of Lateralization, Age, and Sex on Frequency Following Response in Children: Neural Speech Encoding to a 170 ms [da] Stimulus.

Central auditory processing efficiency is considered a predictor of how well children can learn to read, with the Frequency Following Response (FFR) serving as a sensitive biomarker of neural speech encoding ability. However, data regarding the 170 ms [da] stimulus in children who are native speakers of Brazilian Portuguese (BP) remain limited. This study investigated FFR results in 37 typically developing, normal-hearing children aged 8 to 10 years. Participants underwent audiological, behavioral, and academic performance screenings, followed by monaural FFR recording (using a 170 ms [da] sti

A rapid high-throughput strategy for detecting voriconazole based on surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy.

Voriconazole (VOR) is a first-line drug for the treatment of invasive aspergillosis, while its pharmacokinetic parameters exhibit significant individual variability, necessitating therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) to ensure optimal outcomes. Given the limitations of current monitoring techniques, it is imperative to develop new point-of-care testing (POCT) methods for detecting antimicrobial drugs. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has shown considerable potential in the field of blood antimicrobial concentration monitoring. In this study, the theoretical Raman spectra of VOR were fir

Peripheral B cell selection and homeostasis.

The size and makeup of mature B cell compartments are controlled by the proportion of immature B cells that complete differentiation, coupled with the average lifespan of mature B cells. Thus, determining the selective and homeostatic factors controlling these parameters is key to understanding how the B cell repertoire is established and maintained. Our previous work defined the developmental stages spanning immature B cell formation in the marrow and final maturation in the periphery. More recently, we have focused on the molecular basis for survival and differentiation within these developm

Particle engineering for intracellular delivery of vancomycin to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)-infected macrophages.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection is a serious threat to the public health. MRSA is particularly difficult to treat when it invades host cells and survive inside the cells. Although vancomycin is active against MRSA, it does not effectively kill intracellular MRSA due to the molecular size and polarity that limit its cellular uptake. To overcome poor intracellular delivery of vancomycin, we developed a particle formulation (PpZEV) based on a blend of polymers with distinct functions: (i) poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA, P) serving as the main delivery platform, (

Does pre-treatment with bile acids enhance efficacy of biliary extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy?

To determine the effect of chenodiol and ursodiol pre-treatment prior to shock wave lithotripsy of gallstones, two groups of 50 gallbladder stones (n = 100), obtained at cholecystectomy, were matched according to their size, shape and weight. All stones were stored in a bile perfused gallbladder model for two weeks. In the first group (A), serving as control, native bile was used, whereas in the other group (B), ursodiol- and chenodiol-enriched bile was perfused, both bile acids at therapeutic concentrations. After two weeks of pre-treatment, electromagnetic shock wave lithotripsy (19 kV, 1 Hz

Nasal variation in relation to high-altitude adaptations among Tibetans and Andeans.

OBJECTIVES: High-altitude (>2500 m) populations face several pressures, including hypoxia and cold-dry air, resulting in greater respiratory demand to obtain more oxygen and condition inspired air. While cardiovascular and pulmonary adaptations to high-altitude hypoxia have been extensively studied, adaptations of upper-respiratory structures, e.g., nasal cavity, remain untested. This study investigates whether nasal morphology presents adaptations to hypoxic (larger noses) and/or cold-dry (tall/narrow noses) conditions among high-altitude samples. METHODS: CT scans of two high- and four low-

Access to 5- to 14-Membered N-Heterocycles by Alkylamination of 1,3-Dienes via Palladium Catalysis.

Medium-sized rings show great potential in medicinal chemistry but are difficult to achieve via direct cyclization reaction. We herein report a versatile and mild photocatalytic approach for synthesis of medium- and large-sized vinyl N-heterocycles by radical-mediated cyclization of sulfonamides with pendant 1,3-dienes. The reaction involves the generation of radicals from alkyl halides and cyclization of π-allylpalladium species. This method could serve as a versatile platform for the construction of N-heterocycles with medium- and large-sized rings via Pd catalysis.
