Protogynous functional hermaphroditism in the North American annual killifish, Millerichthys robustus.

Sex change (sequential hermaphroditism) has evolved repeatedly in teleost fishes when demographic conditions mediate fundamentally different sex-specific returns for individuals of particular age and size. We investigated the conditions for potential sex change in an annual killifish (Millerichthys robustus) from temporary pools in Mexico. In natural populations, we detected adults with intersex colouration and gonads. Therefore, we experimentally tested whether this apparent sex change can be generated by manipulation of ecological and social conditions, rather than being caused by environmen

ZZ/ZW Sex Chromosomes in the Madagascar Girdled Lizard, Zonosaurus madagascariensis (Squamata: Gerrhosauridae).

Scincoidea, the reptilian clade that includes girdled lizards, night lizards, plated lizards and skinks, are considered as a lineage with diversity in sex-determining systems. Recently, the hypothesis on the variability in sex determination in skinks and even more the absence of sex chromosomes in some of them has been rivalling. Homologous, evolutionary stable XX/XY sex chromosomes were documented to be widespread across skinks. However, sex determination in the other scincoidean families is highly understudied. ZZ/ZW sex chromosomes have been identified only in night lizards and a single spe

Lizards as Model Organisms of Sex Chromosome Evolution: What We Really Know from a Systematic Distribution of Available Data?

Lizards represent unique model organisms in the study of sex determination and sex chromosome evolution. Among tetrapods, they are characterized by an unparalleled diversity of sex determination systems, including temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) and genetic sex determination (GSD) under either male or female heterogamety. Sex chromosome systems are also extremely variable in lizards. They include simple (XY and ZW) and multiple (X1X2Y and Z1Z2W) sex chromosome systems and encompass all the different hypothesized stages of diversification of heterogametic chromosomes, from homomor

Exploring protandry and pupal size selection for Aedes albopictus sex separation.

BACKGROUND: We explored the possibility to improve male/female separation (sexing) in Aedes albopictus by selection of two strains, one toward increasing sex dimorphism and another toward increasing protandry. In the laboratory we selected and crossed small males with large females to exploit dimorphism, and early pupating males with late pupating females to exploit protandry. RESULTS: While selection for enhanced dimorphism was not a profitable character, the selection for enhanced protandry up to F10 produced significant improvement in the time interval between male and female pupation. Molecular analysis of the sex chromosomes of the platyfish Xiphophorus maculatus: Towards the identification of a new type of master sexual regulator in vertebrates.

In contrast to mammals and birds, fish display an amazing diversity of genetic sex determination systems, with frequent changes during evolution possibly associated with the emergence of new sex chromosomes and sex-determining genes. To better understand the molecular and evolutionary mechanisms driving this diversity, several fish models are studied in parallel. Besides the medaka (Oryzias latipes Temminck and Schlegel, 1846) for which the master sex-determination gene has been identified, one of the most advanced models for studying sex determination is the Southern platyfish (Xiphophorus ma

Sex Reversal in Birds.

Sexual differentiation in birds is controlled genetically as in mammals, although the sex chromosomes are different. Males have a ZZ sex chromosome constitution, while females are ZW. Gene(s) on the sex chromosomes must initiate gonadal sex differentiation during embryonic life, inducing paired testes in ZZ individuals and unilateral ovaries in ZW individuals. The traditional view of avian sexual differentiation aligns with that expounded for other vertebrates; upon sexual differentiation, the gonads secrete sex steroid hormones that masculinise or feminise the rest of the body. However, recen

Plant sex-determining genes and the genetics of the evolution towards dioecy.

Thanks to significant advances in genomics and bioinformatics, research on plant sex-determining genes has made remarkable progress over the past decade. Since the discovery of the OGI-MeGI sex-determination system in persimmons in 2014, candidate sex-determining genes have been identified in a dozen flowering plant species. In this review, we examine these newly discovered genes and explore what they reveal about the genetic basis of the evolution of dioecy. While these genes are diverse, many belong to key developmental pathways previously described in other species. Two primary evolutionary

Sex-reversal and Histopathological Assessment of Potential Endocrine-Disrupting Effects of Graphene Oxide on Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) Larvae.

Sex-ratio is considered as an end point during endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) evaluation. Many fish species including Japanese medaka have XX/XY sex determination mechanism, however, sex reversal (SR) can be induced by external and genetic factors. SR imposed an imbalance in natural sex ratio of a population living in any ecosystem. Considering SR as an end point, we aimed to investigate the potential EDC effects of graphene oxide (GO), a nanocarbon, using Japanese medaka as a model. One-day post-hatch (dph) medaka fries were exposed to GO (2.5, 5.0, 10.0 and 20 mg/L) for 96 h without f

Identification of structural variation and polymorphisms of a sex co-segregating scaffold in spinach.

Spinach is a common vegetable, and dioecy is maintained by a pair of XY sex chromosomes. Due to limited genomic resources and its highly repetitive genome, limited studies were conducted to investigate the genomic landscape of the region near sex-determining loci. In this study, we screened the structure variations (SVs) between Y-linked contigs and a 1.78-Mb X scaffold (Super_scaffold 66), which enabled the development of 12 sex co-segregating DNA markers. These markers were tested in one F1 mapping population and 40 spinach accessions, which comprised 692 individual plants with the strong se

Seasonal environmental change and sex change in a cnidarian.

In various animal species with distinct sexes, sequential hermaphroditism occurs whereby adults change their sex. The role of environmental factors in triggering sex change events is still relatively poorly understood, despite that climate-driven sex-ratio distortion may increase extinction risk. Here, we investigated the effect of seasonal temperature fluctuations on the expression of sex-related genes and sex change in the gonochoristic freshwater cnidarian, brown hydra (Hydra oligactis). Individuals of this species reproduce clonally throughout much of the year but switch to sexual reproduc

A nonfunctional copy of the salmonid sex-determining gene (sdY) is responsible for the "apparent" XY females in Chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha.

Many salmonids have a male heterogametic (XX/XY) sex determination system, and they are supposed to have a conserved master sex-determining gene (sdY) that interacts at the protein level with Foxl2 leading to the blockage of the synergistic induction of Foxl2 and Nr5a1 of the cyp19a1a promoter. However, this hypothesis of a conserved master sex-determining role of sdY in salmonids is challenged by a few exceptions, one of them being the presence of naturally occurring "apparent" XY Chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, females. Here, we show that some XY Chinook salmon females have a sdY g

Sex preselection: high-speed flow cytometric sorting of X and Y sperm for maximum efficiency.

Sex preselection that is based on flow-cytometric measurement of sperm DNA content to enable sorting of X- from Y-chromosome-bearing sperm has proven reproducible at various locations and with many species at greater than 90% purity. Offspring of the predetermined sex in both domestic animals and human beings have been born using this technology since its introduction in 1989. The method involves treating sperm with the fluorescent dye, Hoechst 33342, which binds to the DNA and then sorting them into X- and Y-bearing-sperm populations with a flow cytometer/cell sorter modified specifically for

Sex-limited chromosomes and non-reproductive traits.

Sex chromosomes are typically viewed as having originated from a pair of autosomes, and differentiated as the sex-limited chromosome (e.g. Y) has degenerated by losing most genes through cessation of recombination. While often thought that degenerated sex-limited chromosomes primarily affect traits involved in sex determination and sex cell production, accumulating evidence suggests they also influence traits not sex-limited or directly involved in reproduction. Here, we provide an overview of the effects of sex-limited chromosomes on non-reproductive traits in XY, ZW or UV sex determination s

Adult sex ratios in captive reptiles, birds and mammals vary with the sex determination system.

The adult sex ratio (ASR; the proportion of males in the adult population) is a key demographic trait that varies widely across species and is linked to mating systems and sexually selected traits. Previous research on wild tetrapods showed that ASR is associated with genotypic sex determination system: species with male-heterogamety (XY sex chromosome system) tend to have more female-biased ASRs than species with female-heterogamety (ZW system). If genotypic mechanisms of sex determination are involved, these may also shape ASRs in controlled environments. Here, we test the latter proposition

Disruption of Sex-Linked Sox3 Causes ZW Female-to-Male Sex Reversal in the Japanese Frog Glandirana rugosa.

Sox3 is an ancestral homologous gene of the male-determining Sry in eutherian mammals and determines maleness in medaka fish. In the Japanese frog, Glandirana rugosa, Sox3 is located on the Z and W chromosomes. To assess the sex-determining function of Sox3 in this frog, we investigated its expression in gonads during early tadpole development and conducted genome-editing experiments. We found that the Sox3 mRNA levels in the gonads/mesonephroi were much higher in ZW females than that in ZZ males, and that the W-borne allele was dominantly expressed. A higher expression in ZW females preceded
