Mice acquire flavor preferences during shipping.

Vigorous motion can cause rodents to develop flavor aversions and show other signs of malaise. We tested whether a flavor aversion could be induced by shipping mice from an animal breeder to a test site. Boxes of 12 male C57BL/6J mice were shipped approximately 950 km from Bar Harbor, ME to Philadelphia, PA by truck. For some boxes, the gel provided for hydration was flavored with almond and for others it was flavored with banana. After the journey, the mice were individually housed and allowed to recover for 5 days. They then received a choice between the two flavors of gel. Contrary to expec

An outbreak of rubella aboard a ship of the German Navy.

BACKGROUND: During May and June 1996, an outbreak of rubella occurred offshore aboard a ship of the German Navy. The outbreak spread among 330 crew members over a period of 9 weeks, ending 2 days after the ship's return. This is the first detailed epidemiological investigation of a rubella outbreak on a ship, describing temporal progression, clinical manifestations, immunization status and seroprevalence of the population exposed. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Outbreak investigation using a questionnaire, health records and rubella serology (hemagglutination inhibition (HI) test and EIA). RESULTS: O

Shipping fever pneumonia in yearling feedlot cattle.

During each week of 1974, we surveyed, for illnesses and deaths, a continually changing population of yearling feedlot cattle that, for the year, totaled 407,000 animals. About 5.1% of the cattle sickened and, of these, 18.9% died. From the 3,943 fatalities, 1,988 necropsies were made. About 75% of the clinical diagnoses and 64% of the necropsy diagnoses were respiratory tract diseases; of the fatalities from respiratory tract diseases, 75% were attributed to shipping fever pneumonia. Nearly 72% of fatal cases of shipping fever pneumonia occurred during the first 45 days on feed. In the lungs

Enhancing microplastic monitoring with ships of opportunity to determine baselines: Methodological design matters.

Ships of opportunity provide a platform to assess marine pollution without dedicated field campaigns, offering a cost-effective means to expand monitoring coverage. In this study, a microplastic sampling module was integrated into an existing FerryBox system on a commercial ferry (M/S Color Fantasy) operating between Oslo (Norway) and Kiel (Germany). This setup enabled routine acquisition of samples in the Skagerrak and Kattegat areas. Between 2019 and 2022, 39 subsurface samples were collected using an underway pump-based FerryBox module and a filter cascade targeting particles larger than 10…

Ultrafine particulate matter emitted from ships drives inflammation and susceptibility to viral infection.

Exposure to ambient airborne particulate matter (PM) has been associated with almost 9 million premature deaths per year worldwide. Ports are essential infrastructure for trade and transport, with over 80% of the world's international trade volume travelling by sea, yet there is little understanding of the potential health effects of PM from ships. Here, we studied the elemental and toxicological characteristics of size-fractionated PM collected at different areas of a busy European mixed-use port. We found that unregulated ultrafine PM, a PM size fraction <100 nm in aerodynamic diameter, orig…

Infectious diseases on passenger ships: Port preparedness and response - A narrative systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Ships are environments conducive to the spread of infectious diseases among passengers and crew members. In this context, it is essential to establish effective prevention and control measures to protect the health of passengers and crew members while ensuring that shipping minimizes its contribution to the global spread of disease via ship-to-shore interactions. The aim of this review is to provide knowledge on the impact of infectious diseases on board large passenger ships on the port, the port community and other land-based operations. METHODS: A systematic literature review w…

Where are the cruise ships? mobility and immobility of cruises under COVID-19.

The aim of this study is to reveal the spatial-temporal characteristics and influencing factors of the static and dynamic distribution of global cruise ships, against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has transformed the global cruise network from "lines" to "points". This study collected trajectory data for 292 cruise ships and data for 789 cruise ports worldwide from March 2020 to July 2021. Based on the relationship between port and navigation, port management rights research, and port geography theory, we analyzed the spatial distribution and spatiotemporal migration of cruise s…

[Legionella Species Isolated in the Water Systems of Ships and Their Molecular Characterization].

Legionella species are generally found in nature and in water resources, and they are gram negative bacilli that can cause pneumonia by being transmitted from water systems to humans via aerosol or aspiration. Legionnaires' disease caused by this agent continues to be a public health problem in cruise ships. In this study, it was aimed to determine the prevalence of the colonization of Legionella species by culture method and to determine the molecular characterization of the isolated Legionella in water samples taken from the water systems of the ships docking in Mersin International Port. A …

Uneven distribution of inorganic pollutants in marine air originating from ocean-going ships.

The distribution of mass, water-soluble inorganic salts and mineral elements of size-segregated aerosols (PM1, PM2.5-1 and PM10-2.5), precur … id dispersion of pollutants in the marine air. The nano-aerosol count, originating from ocean-going ships, peaked at lower average aerodynamic diameters (e.g., ≈28 nm) than those, observed from low-displacement vessels (45-50 nm, e.g., for fishing boats). The average diameter of nano-PM depended also on weather conditions, e.g., it was higher (≈50 nm) i …

Cost-benefit analysis of ships NOx Emission Control Areas (NECA) along China's coastal area.

Shipping, as a crucial pillar of global trade, generates significant amounts of nitrogen oxides (NOx), which profoundly impact the environme … achieves the most significant reduction, with a 48.8 % decrease in NOx emissions specifically from ships built after 2016. Among different emission reduction technologies, Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) proves to be more cost-effective and efficient than Exhaust Gas Recirculation combined with Water Injection (EGR + WIF) for long-distance voyages. …
