Patients' expectations and actual use of custom-made orthopaedic shoes.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between patients' expectations and the actual use of custom-made orthopaedic shoes. DESIGN: A prospective cohort study with internal comparison. SETTING: Twelve orthopaedic shoe companies. PATIENTS: During six months, consecutive patients who were provided with their first ever pair of orthopaedic shoes and aged 16 years or older were recruited. A total of 339 patients with different pathologies were included (response 67%). Mean (SD) age of the patients was 63 (15) years, and 129 patients (38%) were male. MAIN MEASURES: A practical and reproducibl…

Data driven shoe design improves running economy beyond state-of-the-art Advanced Footwear Technology running shoes.

BACKGROUND: Advanced Footwear Technology (AFT) has enabled remarkable improvements in running performance over traditional marathon racing shoes. However, reported differences between state-of-the-art AFT models are small, and vary across individuals. To assess if the benefits of AFT have been fully realized or if further running economy improvements can be unlocked using modern computational design and optimization techniques, we compared a prototype AFT shoe developed using a data-driven computational design process (PUMA Fast-R 3 (FR3)) against its traditionally developed predecessor model …

The ballet technique shoe: a preliminary study of eleven differently modified ballet technique shoes using force and pressure plates.

Ballet dancers are vulnerable to various stress-related injuries; foot and ankle injuries are the most common. This study determined if the pressure across the foot could be more evenly distributed by wearing various modified technique shoes padded with PPT, Spenco, or Sorbathane, alone or in combinations. A professional ballet dancer performed a jump by taking a single step on his left foot, jumping and landing with his right foot on the force and pressure plates with each modified shoe plus one unmodified shoe. The results of this study revealed: (1) total force cannot be reduced, (2) center…

Are your shoes safe for the environment? - Toxicity screening of leachates from microplastic fragments of shoe soles using freshwater organisms.

This study investigated the toxic effects of leachates from microplastic fragments of soles from four different types of shoes (slippers, trekking shoes, running shoes, and sneakers) on three aquatic organisms (Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, Daphnia magna, and Danio rerio). The chemical components in each leachate were identified; furthermore, chlorophyll a contents of C. reinhardtii were measured, and immobilization of D. magna and deformities in D. rerio were observed. The abnormalities observed in the test species exposed to the leachates were compared and chemical compounds majorly influencing…

The effect of shoe and floor characteristics on walking kinematics.

It is common sense that walking on sand poses challenges to postural control. However, there are no studies quantifying the kinematics of sand walking compared to other types of postural perturbations such as unstable shoes. The aim of the study was to investigate differences in walking kinematics during walking on solid ground, in unstable shoes and on unstable surfaces. Nineteen healthy young adults (23.5 ± 1.5 years) performed three different walking tasks: 1) walking at preferred speed while wearing regular shoes; 2) Walking at preferred speed wearing Masai Barefoot Technology shoes and 3)…

The influence of shoe aging on children running biomechanics.

Athletic children are prone to overuse injuries, especially at the heel and knee. Since footwear is an extrinsic factor of lower limb injury risk, the aim of this study was to assess the influence of shoe aging on children running biomechanics. Fourteen children active in sports participated in a laboratory biomechanical evaluation. A new pair of shoes was provided to each participant at an inclusion visit. Four months later, the participants performed a running task and their kinematics and kinetics were assessed both with their used shoes and with a new pair of shoes identical to the first. …

Minimalist shoe injuries: three case reports.

Running in minimalist shoes continues to increase in popularity and multiple mainstream shoe companies now offer minimalist shoes. While there is no evidence that traditional running shoes prevent injuries, there are concerns that the designs of minimalist shoes may increase injury risk. However, reports of injuries in runners wearing minimalist shoes are rare. We present three injuries occurring in runners that were wearing minimalist shoes at the time of injury. All three of the runners switched immediately to the minimalist shoes with no transition period. We recommend that any transition t…

Reduced fertility among shoe manufacturing workers.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether fertility is reduced among female shoe manufacturing workers exposed to organic solvents. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on time to pregnancy (TTP) among 250 Portuguese shoe manufacturing workers exposed to solvents and 250 unexposed women working in stores of food units and storehouses. Data on TTP and related factors were collected by face-to-face interviews. The participation rate was 92%, and 81% of the workers (197 exposed women and 209 unexposed women) provided data for the analyses. Exposure assessment was based on hygienic measurements

Shoe design for prevention of injuries in sport climbing.

Foot injuries and deformations are more frequent at higher levels of sport climbing. These are accepted as unavoidable because it is assumed that, for optimal performance, a prerequisite is the wearing of a shoe, which is too tight and has an unnatural shape. Based on a biomechanical analysis, we came up with a different approach to shoe design. By using regional thinning of the sole, easy flexion and extension of the toes is made possible. The form of the shoe conforms to the natural form of the foot, the shoe closure provides a close fit for feet with width differences of up to 20 mm and a s

[Design and effect of sports shoe insoles for the runner].

Running injuries of the lower extremities are more frequent with increasing intensity and extent of training. Biomechanical investigations demonstrate that exertion induced injuries of the foot, achillotendinitis, patellar tendinitis and shin splint syndrome are correlated with disorders in footstrike patterns. Therefore running shoe insoles can eliminate peak forces by exactly placing supporting elements. Furthermore peak forces may be distributed and complaints may be reduced. 50 runners with exertion induced injuries of the lower extremity were provided with appropriate running shoe insoles

[Erysipeloid as an occupational disease of workers in shoe enterprises].

An outbreak of erysipeloid among the workers of a shoe factory is described. The spread of infection occurred due to contact with infected raw materials, which was confirmed by the isolation of Erysipelotrix rhusiopathiae from washings made from chrome and Russia leather supplied by different tanneries, as well as from casein glue. The raw materials could be additionally infected by rodents, in particular by common voles; the above-mentioned infective agent had been repeatedly isolated from these animals on the territory of this region. Leather was also infected in the process of soaking: the
