The trophoblast giant cells of cricetid rodents.

Giant cells are a prominent feature of placentation in cricetid rodents. Once thought to be maternal in origin, they are now known to be trophoblast giant cells (TGCs). The large size of cricetid TGCs and their nuclei reflects a high degree of polyploidy. While some TGCs are found at fixed locations, others migrate throughout the placenta and deep into the uterus where they sometimes survive postpartum. Herein, we review the distribution of TGCs in the placenta of cricetids, including our own data from the New World subfamily Sigmodontinae, and attempt a comparison between the TGCs of cricetid…

Alterations in blood glucose concentration in wild rodents, Holochilus sciureus, naturally infected with Schistosoma mansoni.

The present study aimed to evaluate the changes in peripheral blood glucose concentrations induced by Schistosoma mansoni infection in Holochilus sciureus rodents, a wild reservoir of the parasite. Glucose concentration was measured in the plasma of blood samples using a colorimetric enzymatic test. Biological parameters and S. mansoni burden in each rodent were also verified and correlated with glucose concentrations. A total of 76 H. sciureus were captured, out of which 20 (26%) were infected with S. mansoni (n=13 males and n=7 females). Although the parasite burden was comparable between th

Descriptions of two new species of flea of the genus Plocopsylla in northwestern Argentina.

Two new species of flea of the genus Plocopsylla, subgenus Plocopsylla, (Siphonaptera: Stephanocircidae) collected from sigmodontine rodents in northwestern Argentina are described and a key to identification of species of the genus Plocopsylla, subgenus Plocopsylla, in Argentina is presented. Plocopsylla (P.) inti is cited for the first time in Argentina, extending its distribution ∼ 970 km further south than previously documented. New locality data and flea-host associations are recorded. The contributions of this study are relevant because they increase knowledge of the diversity of flea fa

Description of adult and fourth-stage larva of Litomosoides navonae n. sp. (Nematoda: Onchocercidae), a parasite of five species of sigmodontine rodents from northeastern Argentina.

This study describes a new species of Litomosoides Chandler, 1931, parasitic in five different sigmodontine rodents from Misiones, Chaco and Formosa provinces of Argentina. The fourth-stage (L4) larva (male and female) is also described. L. navonae n. sp. exhibits: a bottle-shaped buccal cavity; a buccal capsule with irregularly crenate external walls; four externo-labial papillae and one ventral cephalic papilla; a well differentiated oesophagus; and sigmodontis-type spicules. The microfilaria is fusiform, with a large sheath. The L4 has a buccal capsule which is relatively longer than that o

[Regional differences in the pineal gland of the cotton rat, Sigmodon hispidus. Light and electron microscopic observations].

The determination of volumes of the distal and proximal halves of the pineal glands of cotton rats (Sigmodon hispidus) and Sprague-Dawley rats revealed that the volume of the proximal half was far larger in cotton rats than in Sprague-Dawley rats. Light and electron microscopic examination of the distal, middle and proximal pineal regions in the cotton rat revealed the presence of regional differences in parenchymal cells, capillary endothelial cells and pericapillary spaces. Nuclear sizes of pinealocytes were larger in the distal region than in the middle and proximal regions. The diameter of

Cotton rats and other small mammals as hosts for immature Dermacentor variabilis (Acari: Ixodidae) in central Oklahoma.

Eight species of small mammals were evaluated as potential hosts for American dog ticks, Dermacentor variabilis (Say), in an upland, tallgrass prairie study site in central Oklahoma. Only hispid cotton rats, Sigmodon hispidus, and deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus, were found to be important hosts for immature D. variabilis. Although D. varibilis larvae and nymphs frequently infested both cotton rats and deer mice, cotton rats were the most important host species for both immature stages in the study area. Cotton rats constituted 63.2% of the total 530 small mammals captured and were hosts to

Presence of Raccoon Roundworm (Baylisascaris procyonis) in Habitat Associated with Allegheny Woodrats (Neotoma magister) in Western Virginia, USA, 2022-24.

Baylisascaris procyonis is a roundworm that does not affect its definitive host, raccoons (Procyon lotor), but may have a devastating effect when ingested by paratenic hosts such as Allegheny woodrats (Neotoma magister). Despite being considered a major factor in woodrat population extirpation and decline in states northward, there have been no large-scale surveys for raccoon roundworm in Virginia, US. From 2022 to 2024, we visited 60 karst or nonkarst rocky habitats known (current or historical) or suspected to be Allegheny woodrat locations in western Virginia. We opportunistically collected

Alternatives to retroorbital blood collection in hispid cotton rats (Sigmodon hispidus).

Cotton rats (Sigmodon hispidus) are a valuable animal model for many human viral diseases, including polio virus, measles virus, respiratory syncytial virus, and herpes simplex virus. Although cotton rats have been used in research since 1939, few publications address handling and sampling techniques for this species, and the retroorbital sinus remains the recommended blood sampling site. Here we assessed blood sampling methods that are currently used in other species and a novel subzygomatic sampling site for their use in S. hispidus. The subzygomatic approach accesses a venous sinus that pos

Experimental infections of Oryzomys couesi with sympatric arboviruses from Mexico.

Coues rice rat (Oryzomys couesi), a species abundant throughout Central America, was evaluated experimentally for the ability to serve as an amplifying host for three arboviruses: Patois (Bunyaviridae, Orthobunyavirus), Nepuyo (Orthobunyavirus), and Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus subtype ID (Togaviridae, Alphavirus). These three viruses have similar ecologies and are known to co-circulate in nature. Animals from all three cohorts survived infection and developed viremia with no apparent signs of illness and long-lasting antibodies. Thus, O. couesi may play a role in the general maintenan

Ultrastructure of the alimentary tract of third-stage larvae of Litomosoides carinii.

The ultrastructural morphology of the alimentary tract of the third-stage larvae of Litomosoides carinii (Nematoda: Filarioidea) is described. The oesophagus possesses the characteristic tri-radiate lumen and is lined by cuticle. Teh lumen of the oesophagus is tightly occluded anteriorly by particulate material and posteriorly at the oesophagointestional junction. Three glands are present in the glandular region, one dorsal and two subventral. These glands contain secretory granules with similar morphological and staining properties. The lumen of the intestine is ill-defined without microvilli

Evaluation of vanillic acid analogues as a new class of antifilarial agents.

A number of vanillic acid analogues (1-14) have been synthesised and evaluated against experimental filarial infections using cotton rats (Sigmodon hispidus) infected with Litomosoides carinii, a primary screening model, at a dose of 30 mg/kg, ip for 5 days. Of the 8 compounds tested, 4 (5,7, 11 and 12) exhibited high micro- and macro-filaricidal activity with sterilization of surviving female worms. Compounds 5, 7, 12 showed remarkable adulticidal action (> 80%). Sterilization of the female worms by compounds 11 and 12 was highly significant (80-100%).

Possible formation of calcareous corpuscles by the brood capsule in secondary hepatic metacestodes of Echinococcus multilocularis.

In secondary hepatic metacestodes of Echinococcus multilocularis at 156 days post-infection, a few small structures exhibiting a central body and a small number of concentric layers were found on the outer surface of the brood capsule, and many such structures were detected on the germinal layer. As these structures are believed to represent immature calcareous corpuscles, we think that not only germinal layer cells but also brood capsule cells of E. multilocularis metacestodes can form calcareous corpuscles.

Helminth parasites of Galápagos mammals: a new cestode of the genus Raillietina from the endemic rice rat Nesoryzomys swarthi and a summary of parasites from both endemic and invasive rodents.

In this first report of endoparasites from endemic land-mammals of the Galápagos Islands, we describe a new species of cestode of the genus Raillietina (Cyclophyllidea: Davaineidae) from a species of Nesoryzomys and summarize the extent of helminth parasitism in both oryzomyine endemics and introduced species of Rattus. Up to the current time, no helminth parasites have been reported from rodents of the Galápagos, and little work has yet been done describing and synthesizing Galápagos parasite diversity. In historical times, several species of autochthonous rodents have occupied the islands in

Forest cover influences the fecal virome of Oligoryzomys nigripes in Atlantic Forest remnants, Brazil.

Landscape changes driven by human activities can alter host-pathogen interactions, favoring generalist mammal species that act as reservoirs for zoonotic pathogens, potentially leading to spillover events and outbreaks. Here, we investigated how forest cover influences viral diversity in Oligoryzomys nigripes, a generalist rodent known to harbor zoonotic viruses in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. We employed high-throughput sequencing to explore the fecal virome of 20 specimens collected across three landscapes with varying forest cover (20 %, 40 %, and 60 %) within Atlantic Forest fragments in

Ecological factors shaping the ectoparasite community assembly of the Azara's Grass Mouse, Akodon azarae (Rodentia: Cricetidae).

Parasites are integral members of the global biodiversity. They are useful indicators of environmental stress, food web structure and diversity. Ectoparasites have the potential to transmit vector-borne diseases of public health and veterinary importance and to play an important role in the regulation and evolution of host populations. The interlinkages between hosts, parasites and the environment are complex and challenging to study, leading to controversial results. Most previous studies have been focused on one or two parasite groups, while hosts are often co-infected by different taxa. The

Effects of photoperiod, melatonin, and the pineal gland on compensatory gonadal hypertrophy during postnatal development in the marsh rice rat (Oryzomys palustris).

The roles of photoperiod, melatonin, and the pineal gland in regulating the magnitude of compensatory gonadal hypertrophy (CGH) and other reproductive and non-reproductive organ growth during post-weaning development were examined in the marsh rice rat Oryzomys palustris. Juvenile rice rats of both sexes were left gonadally intact (control group) or unilaterally castrated (ULC) and housed on 12L:12D, 14L:10D, or 16L:8D. Within a photoperiod (14L:10D and 16L:8D, but not 12L:12D), growth of the remaining testis, but not the remaining ovary, as well as several additional organs in both sexes were
