Microbiome-skin-brain axis: A novel paradigm for cutaneous wounds.

Chronic wounds cause a significant burden on society financially, medically, and psychologically. Unfortunately, patients with nonhealing wounds often suffer from comorbidities that further compound their disability. Given the high rate of depressive symptoms experienced by patients with chronic wounds, further studies are needed to investigate the potentially linked pathophysiological changes in wounds and depression in order to improve patient care. The English literature on wound healing, inflammatory and microbial changes in chronic wounds and depression, and antiinflammatory and probiotic

The skin microbiome facilitates adaptive tetrodotoxin production in poisonous newts.

This study of the outcome and prognostic factors in prenatally diagnosed agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) was undertaken to see if there are any differences between subgroups, what relationship they have to neurodevelopmental outcome and whether this information aids the counselling of parents of fetuses with the condition. The outcome of 14 prenatally diagnosed fetuses with ACC and 61 postnatally diagnosed patients was assessed in terms of clinical problems, developmental milestones and neurological signs; each patient was then given a score out of 10, 0 being a normal outcome and 10 bei

Skin Microbiome, Inflammation, and Skin Toxicities in Women With Breast Cancer Receiving Moderately Hypofractionated Radiation Therapy.

PURPOSE: Up to 95% of women during and after radiation therapy (RT) for breast cancer have reported cutaneous toxicity. However, the biologic link between skin microbiome and skin toxicities from RT remains largely unknown. This study aimed to assess the associations of skin microbiome with clinician- and patient-reported skin toxicities and inflammatory markers in women with breast cancer receiving RT. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A prospective, longitudinal study was conducted at a single institution. Thirty-two women with breast cancer undergoing moderately hypofractionated RT for 3 to 4 weeks a…

Innovative Approaches for Maintaining and Enhancing Skin Health and Managing Skin Diseases through Microbiome-Targeted Strategies.

The skin microbiome is crucial in maintaining skin health, and its disruption is associated with various skin diseases. Prebiotics are non-digestible fibers and compounds found in certain foods that promote the activity and growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut or skin. On the other hand, live microorganisms, known as probiotics, benefit in sustaining healthy conditions when consumed in reasonable quantities. They differ from postbiotics, which are by-product compounds from bacteria that release the same effects as their parent bacteria. The human skin microbiome is vital when it comes to m…

The skin microbiome: impact of modern environments on skin ecology, barrier integrity, and systemic immune programming.

Skin barrier structure and function is essential to human health. Hitherto unrecognized functions of epidermal keratinocytes show that the s … of the ecosystems in which we reside. Thus, factors which alter the establishment and health of the skin microbiome have the potential to predispose to not only cutaneous disease, but also other inflammatory non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Indeed, disturbances of the stratum corneum have been noted in allergic diseases (eczema and food allergy), psoriasis, rosa …

Microbiome-Derived Metabolic Signaling in the Gut-Skin Axis: Implications for Nutricosmetics and Healthy Skin Aging.

The gut-skin axis represents a bidirectional communication network linking the gut microbiota, microbial metabolism, immune regulation, and skin physiology. Natural bioactives derived from dietary plants, mushrooms, fermented foods, marine resources, and functional ingredients may influence skin health through both direct nutritional effects and host-microbiome metabolic interactions. This review provides a microbiome-centered, systems-level perspective on the relationships among dietary bioactives, gut microbial biotransformation, microbiome-derived metabolites, and skin aging-associated phys

The skin microbiome of wound scars and unaffected skin in patients with moderate to severe burns in the subacute phase.

Although studies on skin microbiome of acute and chronic wounds abound, evidence on newly built microbial communities of subacute wounds remains scant. To characterize the skin microbiome of recently healed (scarred) burn wounds in relation to unaffected skin surfaces, we collected weekly swabs from patients with moderate to severe burns in the 3rd postburn month for 4 weeks in 2015. We performed skin type (moist, dry, and oily)-matched comparisons within six burn patients (43 pairs of swabs) and with 13 skin-healthy, control patients (22 pairs of samples) using 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequenci…

Temperature and Ultraviolet Radiation Influence the Skin Microbiome of Humpback Whales.

The skin microbiome of humpback whales harbours diverse microbial communities that play a crucial role in host skin protection and environmental interaction. However, studies on cetacean skin microbiomes in the Southern Hemisphere focus on feeding grounds, with limited information on microbiome dynamics at breeding grounds and during migration across contrasting habitats. We characterised the skin microbiome of 46 humpback whales from two seasonal habitats: the Magellan Strait feeding ground and the Ecuadorian coast breeding ground, comparing age, sex, environmental conditions, and seawater. A…

Gut and skin dysbiosis in acne vulgaris: a comparative microbiome analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Acne vulgaris (AV) is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder with multifactorial etiology involving host-microbiome interactions. While cutaneous dysbiosis has been extensively studied, the contribution of the gut microbiome and its potential interaction with the skin microbiome remains insufficiently characterized. METHODS: In this pilot study, paired facial skin swabs and stool samples were collected from 17 patients with moderate-to-severe AV and 14 healthy controls. Microbial DNA was extracted and the V3-V4 regions of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene were sequenced on the Illumina …

The Role of the Gut Microbiome and Microbial Dysbiosis in Common Skin Diseases.

Dermatoses are an increasingly common problem, particularly in developed countries. The causes of this phenomenon include genetic factors and environmental elements. More and more scientific reports suggest that the gut microbiome, more specifically its dysbiosis, also plays an important role in the induction and progression of diseases, including dermatological diseases. The gut microbiome is recognised as the largest endocrine organ, and has a key function in maintaining human homeostasis. In this review, the authors will take a close look at the link between the gut-skin axis and the pathog

Skin microbiome alterations in seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff: A systematic review.

Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) and dandruff (DF) are common chronic inflammatory skin diseases characterized by recurrent greasy scales, sometimes with erythema and itchiness. Although the exact pathophysiology of the disease is still unclear, current theories highlight the role of microbes on the skin surface in the pathogenesis of SD. Here, we conducted a systematic review to investigate the skin microbiome alterations in patients with SD/DF. We searched Medline/PubMed, Embase and Web of Science for research studies published in English between 1 January 2000 and 31 December 2020. A total of 12 …

The gut microbiome alterations in allergic and inflammatory skin diseases - an update.

The human microbiome is a wide range of microorganisms residing in and on our body. The homeostasis between host immune system and the microbial environment allows mutual benefits and protection. Physiological bacterial colonization is essential for the establishment of organism immunity. The human microbiota ecosystem can be divided into several compartments, out of which intestinal flora strongly affects our health and plays a crucial role in the pathophysiology of many diseases. The gastrointestinal tract, being a major guardian of the immune system, maintains the homeostasis with the comme

Environmental influences on the skin microbiome of humans and cattle in rural Madagascar.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The skin harbors a dynamic community of microorganisms, where contact with humans, other animals and the environment can alter microbial communities. Most research on the human skin microbiome features Western populations living in hygienic conditions, yet these populations have vastly different patterns of environmental contact than the majority of people on Earth, including those living in developing countries. METHODOLOGY: We studied skin microbial communities of humans and cattle (zebu) in rural Madagascar to investigate how zebu ownership affects microbial comp…
