BACKGROUND: Clinical characteristics combined with new biomarkers help discriminate between atypical uterine smooth muscle tumors (AUSMT) and leiomyosarcomas (LMS).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively collected a series of leiomyomas (LM), AUSMT, and LMS. Estrogen receptors (ER), progesterone receptors (PR), p16, Ki-67, and p53 expression were assessed by immunohistochemistry. The clinical and pathological features of 25 smooth-muscle tumors of the vulva were analyzed. The patients ranged in age from 17 to 67 (mean, 37.6) years; two were pregnant. OBJECTIVE: Uterine smooth muscle tumors of uncertain malignant potential (STUMP) are a category of tumors that present diagnostic/therapeutic challenges since they cannot be assigned to either a benign or a malignant entity. Hysterectomy is the mainstay of treatment of STUMP. However, in most cases, STUMPs represent an incidental diagnosis following myomectomy. BACKGROUND: Primary endobronchial smooth muscle tumors (SMTs), which are extremely rare, include endobronchial leiomyomas and leiomyosarcomas. Clinically, SMTs present with signs and symptoms of bronchial obstruction, and lack specific radiological findings. Vaginal tumors in children are uncommon. This report describes the rare case of an atypical smooth muscle tumor arising from the vagina in a pediatric patient managed with tumor resection, vaginal reconstruction, and continent urinary diversion. One hundred smooth muscle tumors arising in the gastrointestinal tract and retroperitoneum were reviewed in an attempt to define criteria for the diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma in these sites. On the basis of aggressive behavior, 56 of these neoplasms were diagnosed as leiomyosarcoma. We report a case of a 69-year-old man who had no symptoms and a lung nodule was found incidentally on chest CT 2 years after bilateral lung transplantation.
