Effects of maternal mild hyperglycemia associated with snack intake on offspring metabolism and behavior across the lifespan.

The increasing prevalence of diabetes is of particular concern in women of childbearing age because of the short and long-term consequences of maternal diabetes for the health of the offspring, such as a greater risk of developing metabolic impairments and cognitive deficits. In addition, maternal diet during pregnancy and lactation might contribute to preventing or ameliorating adverse offspring outcomes. Recently, we described that access to snacks exacerbates glucose intolerance in mildly hyperglycemic pregnant dams. Therefore, we hypothesized that these offspring would show greater impairm

Associations between Snacking and Weight Status among Adolescents 12-19 Years in the United States.

Snacking is a significant contributor to energy intake among adolescents, but its association with weight status is unclear. To elucidate this association, data from 6545 adolescents (12-19 years) in the 2005-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were analyzed. The mean number of daily snack occasions, mean snack size, and mean snack energy density were examined by weight classification (body mass index (BMI)-for-age percentiles: normal weight (NW) <85th; overweight (OW) ≥85th to <95th; obese (OB) ≥95th). Models included all snacking parameters, mean meal size, demogra

Support, snacks, and a tailored approach to empower recovery: professionals' insights on supporting children victimized by online child sexual abuse.

INTRODUCTION: Even though Online Child Sexual Abuse (OCSA) has become a recognized phenomenon, there are still extensive gaps in knowledge and understanding of the implications of OCSA. A considerable number of children and adolescents (CAA) are affected daily by OCSA, and it has emerged as a growing threat to their physiological and psychological development. METHOD: This study aimed to explore the experiences of the professionals working with OCSA in various agencies and roles, inclusive of their perception of how OCSA and their work impacts: Children and Adolescents, Caregivers, and Intera

Detection of Low-Density Foreign Objects in Infant Snacks Using a Continuous-Wave Sub-Terahertz Imaging System for Industrial Applications.

Low-density foreign objects (LDFOs) in foods pose significant safety risks to consumers. Existing detection methods, such as metal and X-ray detectors, have limitations in identifying low-density and nonmetallic contaminants. To address these challenges, our research group constructed and optimized a continuous-wave sub-terahertz (THz) imaging system for the real-time, on-site detection of LDFOs in infant snacks. The system was optimized by adjusting the attenuation value from 0 to 9 dB and image processing parameters [White (W), Black (B), and Gamma (G)] from 0 to 100. Its detectability was e

Metabolomic profiling of sweet potato snacks enriched with agave fructans: Effects of vacuum impregnation on in vitro gut-associated metabolites.

White-fleshed sweet potato 'blanco cubano' is an underutilized crop with promising nutritional and functional properties. Enhancement through vacuum impregnation (VI) with agave fructans may improve its prebiotic potential and influence gut microbiota activity. This study evaluated the effects of VI on the nutritional composition, carbohydrate bioaccessibility, in vitro colonic fermentation dynamics, and metabolomic profile of sweet potato slices. Three treatments were applied: untreated control, vacuum impregnation (T1), and immersion impregnation (T2). Samples were analyzed for proximate com

Improvement of bowel movements among people with a sedentary lifestyle after prebiotic snack supply - preliminary study.

INTRODUCTION: Dietary fiber is one of the most important components of food. Fulfilling regulatory and nutritional functions for the intestinal microbiota, it appears to be an essential ingredient for people with a sedentary lifestyle. AIM: We hypothesized that regular intake of a snack containing high amounts of soluble fibre in parallel to a regular diet may rapidly improve bowel habits with simultaneous elevation of synthesis of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA). MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 20 healthy volunteers, with a stool frequency of less than 3 spontaneous bowel movements per week

Socioeconomic status and lifestyle factors modifies the association between snack foods intake and incidence of metabolic syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Intake of snack foods has been previously associated with an elevated risk of chronic disease; however, studies on snack foods and metabolic syndrome (MetS) while considering the modifying effect of socioeconomic status (SES) and lifestyle factors on this association are lacking. We aimed to investigate the association between snack foods intake and the MetS risk, and the mediatory effects of SES and lifestyle factors on the forenamed association among adults who participated in the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (2006-2018). METHODS: This is a prospective study of 1915 participan

Neuromodulation directed at the prefrontal cortex of subjects with obesity reduces snack food intake and hunger in a randomized trial.

Background: Obesity is associated with reduced activation in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), a region of the brain that plays a key role in the support of self-regulatory aspects of eating behavior and inhibitory control. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive technique used to modulate brain activity. Objectives: We tested whether repeated anodal tDCS targeted at the left DLPFC (compared with sham tDCS) has an immediate effect on eating behavior during ad libitum food intake, resulting in weight change, and whether it might influence longer-term food i

Snack food consumption of 12 year old inner-city children and its relationship to oral health.

The relations between reported frequency of consumption of 18 common snack foods, SES variables, and oral health scores were studied in 92 12-year-old children from three inner-city schools in Rochester, New York. The group was composed of 44 males and 48 females who were either black or had a Spanish surname. The study documented only a few significant relations between consumption of snack foods and DMF scores or overall oral health. Reported cake consumption correlated positively with total debris and gingivitis, and consumption of chewy candy and ice cream was positively related to DMF sco

Associations between child temperament, weight status, and snack food consumption in a diverse sample of young children.

Previous studies have shown mixed results regarding the relationship between snack food intake, child temperament, and weight-for length-z (WFL-z) score; therefore, this study examined these associations in young children. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 96 mother-child dyads (mean child age = 14.9 months, SD = 2.6). Mothers completed the Infant Behavior Questionnaire, assessing Surgency, Negative Affectivity and Regulation. Three 24-h dietary recalls were analyzed using the Nutrition Data System for Research. Snack foods were categorized as Salty, Sweet and Commercial Snack Foods.

Snacking behaviors and early childhood caries severity among Myanmar preschool children: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Early childhood caries (ECC) is highly prevalent among preschool children, particularly in Southeast Asian countries. Although dietary intake is a well-established risk factor, evidence on how specific snacking behaviors contribute to caries severity remains limited. This study examined the associations of food pocketing habit, main snack type, snack frequency, snack timing, and combined snacking patterns with ECC severity among Myanmar preschool children. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was performed using baseline data from an ongoing cohort study of 815 children aged 4-5 ye

The Associations between Snack Intake and Cariogenic Oral Microorganism Colonization in Young Children of a Low Socioeconomic Status.

Cariogenic microorganisms are crucial pathogens contributing to the development of early childhood caries. Snacks provide fermentable carbohydrates, altering oral pH levels and potentially affecting microorganism colonization. However, the relationship between snack intake and cariogenic microorganisms like Candida and Streptococcus mutans in young children is still unclear. This study aimed to assess this association in a prospective underserved birth cohort. Data from children aged 12 to 24 months, including oral microbial assays and snack intake information, were analyzed. Sweet and non-swe

The effect of discretionary snack consumption on overall energy intake, weight status, and diet quality: A systematic review.

The consumption frequency and portion size of discretionary snacks are thought to contribute to a greater food intake and risk of overweight or obesity in the developed world but evidence from epidemiological studies is inconclusive. To investigate this, we systematically evaluated evidence on the effects of discretionary snack consumption on weight status, energy intake, and diet quality. Articles involving discretionary snacks reported against the outcome measures of any primary, peer-reviewed study using human participants from free-living conditions for all age groups were included. From Snack Time to the Operating Room: A Case Report of Septic Arthritis in a Child After a Toothpick Injury.

Eikenella corrodens and Streptococcus sanguinis are indigenous to the oral cavity and infrequently associated with osteoarticular infections. We detail a case of septic arthritis in a 13-year-old boy who suffered a puncture wound with a toothpick after eating. This case highlights the ability of these microorganisms to instigate osteoarticular infections through penetrating trauma and not only through the hematogenous route.
