Mysterious cohabitation with socially assistive robots among three underserved groups.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study investigates how underserved individuals-older adults, low-income middle-aged men, and adults with disabilities-develop long-term relationships with an AI-powered socially assistive robot (SAR) named Hyodol. We examined how these relationships evolve over eight months and why emotional outcomes differ across three groups. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Using Colaizzi's phenomenological method, the research team analyzed 13,403 conversational segments from 12 highly engaged SAR users (four from each group). Iterative coding procedures with high inter-rater r

Modelling the creation of friends and foes groups in small real social networks.

Although friendship networks have been extensively studied, few models and studies are available to understand the reciprocity of friendship and foes. Here a model is presented to explain the directed friendship and foes network formation observed in experiments of Mexican and Hungarian schools. Within the presented model, each agent has a private opinion and a public one that shares to the group. There are two kinds of interactions between agents. The first kind represent interactions with the neighbors while the other represents the attitude of an agent to the overall public available inform

A metapopulation model of social group dynamics and disease applied to Yellowstone wolves.

The population structure of social species has important consequences for both their demography and transmission of their pathogens. We deve … ns into the models reduces the size of the host population, predominantly by reducing the number of social groups. Average group size responds in more subtle ways: infected groups decrease in size, but uninfected groups may increase when disease reduces the number of groups and thereby reduces intraspecific aggression. Our modeling approach allows for easy cal …

The contribution of the left inferior frontal gyrus in affective processing of social groups.

We investigated the contribution of the pars opercularis of the left inferior frontal gyrus (LIFGop) in representing knowledge about social groups. We asked healthy individuals to categorize words preceded by semantically congruent or incongruent primes while stimulating the LIFGop. Previous studies showing an involvement of the LIFGop both in processing social stimuli and negative valence words led us to predict that its stimulation would affect responses to negative social category words. Compared to the Vertex as control site, the stimulation of the LIFGop increased the speed of categorizat…

The inclusion of siblings in social skills training groups for boys with Asperger syndrome.

This pilot investigation evaluated the effectiveness of siblings as generalisation agents in an 8-week social skills training (SST) program designed for boys with Asperger syndrome (AS). Twenty-one boys aged 8-12 participated in a SST group alone, with a sibling, or remained in a wait-list control group. After training, participants' identification of non-verbal social cues significantly improved and was maintained at 3-month follow-up, irrespective of sibling involvement. Similar trends existed for participants' ability to accurately interpret emotions relative to controls. Improvements did n

Social-cognitive and behavioral correlates of aggression and victimization in boys' play groups.

A contrived play group procedure was utilized to examine the behavioral and social-cognitive correlates of reactive aggression, proactive aggression, and victimization via peers. Eleven play groups, each of which consisted of six familiar African-American 8-year-old boys, met for 45-min sessions on five consecutive days. Social-cognitive interviews were conducted following the second and fourth sessions. Play group interactions were videotaped and examined by trained observers. High rates of proactive aggression were associated with positive outcome expectancies for aggression/assertion, frequ

Tridimensional personality questionnaire: assessment in patients with social phobia and a control group.

We administered the Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire to 40 control subjects and to 47 social phobia patients who met Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R (SCID) criteria for social phobia and participated in a multicenter treatment study. Multiple comparisons with Bonferroni correction showed a significant increase in total Harm Avoidance scale scores and all four subscale scores for the social phobia group. On a Reward Dependence subscale that measures persistence versus irresoluteness the mean was significantly lower in the social phobia group than the control group. Present f

Mindfulness and acceptance-based group therapy versus traditional cognitive behavioral group therapy for social anxiety disorder: a randomized controlled trial.

UNLABELLED: Recent research has supported the use of mindfulness and acceptance-based interventions for Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to compare mindfulness and acceptance-based group therapy (MAGT) with cognitive behavioral group therapy (CBGT) with respect to outcome. It was hypothesized that MAGT and CBGT would both be superior to a control group but not significantly different from one another. METHOD: Individuals (N = 137, mean age = 34 years, 54% female, 62% White, 20% Asian) diagnosed with SAD were randomly assigned to MAGT (n = 53), CB

Comparison of features of social problem-solving scripts across three groups: educable intellectually disabled, socially poorly adapted, and socially well-adapted students.

The aim of this research was to compare the features of social problem-solving scripts across groups of students with different social problem-solving abilities, based on dynamic memory theory. 54 (32 girls/22 boys) educable intellectually disabled students, 58 (32 girls/26 boys) socially poorly adapted students, and 50 (28 girls/22 boys) socially well-adapted students participated. The average ages for educable intellectually disabled, poorly adapted, and well-adapted students were 13.9 yr. (SD = 1.7), 11.1 yr. (SD = .6), and 11 yr. (SD = .4), respectively. A semi-structured interview was des

Seasonal changes in social cohesion among males in a same-sex primate group.

Male-male interactions in mixed-sex groups of social mammals are typically characterized by a mix of hostility and affiliation, as a result of inherent conflicts over mating opportunities, and the costs and benefits of social alliances, co-operative behaviors, and coalitionary defense. In species of nonhuman primates that form all-male groups, it is still unclear how the tradeoffs between the benefits of forming an all-male group and the cost of male-male competition in seeking mating opportunities with females in bisexual groups influence social cohesion in different seasons. Here, we used so

Cognitive behavioural group therapy for social phobia: evidence of transportability to community clinics.

Cognitive Behavioural Group Therapy (CBGT) for social phobia has been shown to be efficacious within research units and effective within a variety of real world clinical settings. However, most effectiveness studies of CBGT for social phobia have (a) used protocols without demonstrated efficacy, (b) not included direct comparison groups, and/or (c) contained features of efficacy trials. This study addressed these limitations by using a benchmarking strategy to compare outcomes from the same CBGT protocol used in both a research unit and a community clinic. Research (N = 71) and community (N =

Intensive cognitive-behavioral group treatment (CBGT) of social phobia: a randomized controlled study.

The effects of intensive cognitive-behavioral group treatment (CBGT) for social phobia (DSM-IV) were studied in 26 patients randomly assigned either to a treatment group (TG) or to a 6-month waiting list control group (WG). Treatment involved 2 weeks of daily treatment sessions separated by 1 week of homework assignments. TG was superior to WG at all assessment points, i.e., at 3 weeks and at 3 and 6 months of post-treatment. After 6 months, significant treatment effects were found in the majority of social phobia measures indicating decreased levels of social anxiety and avoidance, safety-beh

Cognitive behavioral group therapy vs phenelzine therapy for social phobia: 12-week outcome.

BACKGROUND: This article presents results of the acute treatment phase of a 2-site study comparing cognitive behavioral group therapy (CBGT) and treatment with the monoamine oxidase inhibitor phenelzine sulfate for social phobia. METHODS: One hundred thirty-three patients from 2 sites received 12 weeks of CBGT, phenelzine therapy, pill placebo administration, or educational-supportive group therapy (an attention-placebo treatment of equal credibility to CBGT). The "allegiance effect," ie, the tendency for treatments to seem most efficacious in settings of similar theoretical orientation and l

Activity budgets, social behavior, and fitness outcomes associated with a baboon group fusion.

Many primates exhibit female philopatry and live in stable, female-bonded social groups. Permanent group fusions are rarely documented in these populations. We present a case study on a fusion of two social groups from a hybrid population of baboons (Papio cynocephalus x P. anubis) living in the Amboseli basin of Kenya. The fusion occurred following a period of increased human-induced mortality in one of the two social groups. After the fusion, females from the smaller group became the lowest ranking. We compared female behavior in the months following the fusion to the behavior of females in …

Spatiotemporal dynamics of equine group formation reveal the gradual emergence of social cohesion.

Stable social relationships are essential for horse welfare, yet domestic management often involves regrouping unfamiliar individuals, potentially causing social stress. Fine-scale dynamics of social integration remain poorly quantified due to limitations of observational sampling. Using ultra-wideband real-time positioning, we tracked the development of spatial and social relationships in two newly formed equine groups (n = 19) over 2-12 months. Inter-individual distances decreased significantly, with time spent within 3 m of conspecifics increasing from 1.2 to 27.3% within two months, demons

Mindful minds: How group identity shapes brain and behavior in social decision-making.

Social mindfulness is a form of prosocial behavior that requires limited effort and considers other's needs and desires. But does this consideration persist when the other person supports opposing political ideologies? Using the social mindfulness (SoMi) paradigm with 45 adults holding strong pro- or anti-refugee stances, the current functional magnetic resonance imaging study investigates how group identity influences socially mindful behavior and its neural underpinnings. Consistent with prior research, individuals were more socially mindful toward ingroup members than toward outgroup member

Spontaneous level-2 perspective taking in Balinese children: effects of social group membership.

This study investigated whether spontaneous level-2 perspective taking would emerge in 8-year-old Balinese children and whether it would be similarly modulated by the social group membership of the social partner as reported in previous studies conducted in Western countries. Children (N = 49) participated in a number verification task with a partner in which they had to make simple judgments about numbers displayed on a screen that either appeared the same or different from the perspective of the other person. Conditions varied in terms of the social group membership of the partner. Some chil…

Depression and biological aging: Unexpected vulnerability in relatively advantaged social risk profile group.

BACKGROUND: Depression has significantly associated with biological aging. Although lower social status is generally linked to increased vulnerability to aging, the biological impact of depression may differ according to social status, possibly due to variations in stress perception and structural position. However, it remains unclear how depression is related to biological age acceleration across different social risk profile (SRP). METHODS: We analyzed 18,787 participants from NHANES 2005-2020. PhenoAgeAccel was used as a validated biomarker of biological aging. Depression was defined as PH
