Artificial intelligence interaction is not equivalent to social interaction: Rethinking artificial intelligence-mediated digital exposure in early childhood.

The increasing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into children's daily environments challenges traditional approaches to evaluatin … een exposure is associated with adverse outcomes in language development, attention regulation, and social interaction, although these associations are not uniform and are moderated by content and parental involvement. In contrast, AI-based systems provide adaptive and personalized interactions that may enhance cognitive engagement, including learning and problem-so …

How to run round-robin social interaction studies: A tutorial for the efficient capture of natural social behavior.

The study of natural social behavior is a frontier discipline in psychology. Although such work is highly necessary for advancing and refining theories of social behavior, social cognition, evolutionary psychology, relationships, and more, researchers rarely commit to such intensive research designs due to the anticipated effort involved. In particular, to understand social behavior as it naturally unfolds, scientists must be able to collect and handle a high volume of rich social data efficiently, effectively, and reproducibly. Moreover, because social behavior is highly individualistic and c

Can social robots reduce the loneliness of older adults? -Interaction and communication between social robots and older adults.

This study explored how older adults living alone interact with social robots over time, focusing on whether such engagement mitigates social and emotional loneliness. Fifteen adults (≥65 years) who had used a specific social robot for at least three months participated in in-depth interviews and observations, analyzed through a constructivist grounded theory lens. Many participants anthropomorphized the robot (e.g., "friend," "granddaughter"), resulting in deeper emotional engagement, especially when two-way communication was sustained. Others used it primarily for functional tasks yet still

Virtual reality-assessment of social interactions and prognosis in depression.

BACKGROUND: Freud proposed that excessive self-blame-related motivations such as self-punishing tendencies play a key role in depression. Most of the supporting evidence, however, is based on cross-sectional studies and questionnaire measures. METHODS: In this pre-registered (NCT04593537) study, we used a novel Virtual Reality (VR) task to determine whether maladaptive self-blame-related action tendencies prospectively identify a subgroup of depression with poor prognosis when treated as usual over four months in primary care. Ninety-eight patients with depression (Patient Health Questionnair

Psychometric properties of the social interaction anxiety scale and the social phobia scale in Hungarian adults and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Although social anxiety disorder is one of the most frequent disorders, it often remained unrecognized. Utilizing brief, yet reliable screening tools, such as the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS-6) and the Social Phobia Scale (SPS-6) are helping to solve this problem in parts of Western Europe and the US. Still some countries, like Hungary, lag behind. For this purpose, previous studies call for further evidence on the applicability of the scales in various populations and cultures, as well as the elaborative validity of the short forms. Here, we aimed to provide a thorough …

Effects of neonatal handling on social memory, social interaction, and number of oxytocin and vasopressin neurons in rats.

Early-life environmental events can induce profound long-lasting changes in several behavioral and neuroendocrine systems. The neonatal handling procedure, which involves repeated brief maternal separations followed by experimental manipulations, reduces stress responses and sexual behavior in adult rats. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of neonatal handling on social behaviors of male and female rats in adulthood, as manifest by the results of social memory and social interaction tests. The number of oxytocin (OT) and vasopressin (VP) neurons in the paraventricular (PVN) a…

The Role of Attention in Dyadic Social Interaction With Infants and Their Caregivers.

This study examined the relationship among early attention skills in infants and measures of dyadic interaction during caregiver-infant play, including interpersonal synchrony and turn-taking behavior. Thirty-five caregivers and their one-year-old infants (mean age = 15.34 months) completed a 5-minute free play session and sessions were coded for communication behaviors (eye contact, vocalizations, and gestures), coordinated attention, and infant visual attention states (focused, unfocused, and casual attention). Coordinated attention with a caregiver was not related to caregiver-infant synchr

Social Interactions and Cell Aging Dynamics in Postpartum Women.

Introduction: Psychosocial stressors are linked with declined physical and psychological health, and short telomere length (TL). While positive social interactions have been linked to improved postpartum physical and mental health, little research has explored the longitudinal effects of psychosocial stressors and telomere dynamics in the sensitive postpartum period. This study aimed to examine the effect of positive and negative social interactions on TL among first-time mothers during the first year postpartum. Methods: A cohort of 103 first-time mothers from Northern Israel completed valida…

The development and validation of the Intolerance of Uncertainty in Social Interactions Scale.

Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) is commonly defined as the tendency for one to interpret uncertainty as negative or threatening. Most general or non-specific measures of IU show a strong relationship with worry and generalized anxiety disorder symptoms; however, a specialized measure of intolerance of uncertainty in social situations could provide insight into the role of IU in social anxiety. The purpose of this study was the development and preliminary validation of the Intolerance of Uncertainty in Social Interactions Scale (IU-SIS), a comprehensive measure designed to assess intolerance of…

Oppositions, joints, and targets: the attractors that are the glue of social interactions.

Social interactions are often analyzed by scoring segments of predefined behavior and then statistically assessing numerical and sequential patterns to identify the structure of the encounters. However, this approach can miss the dynamics of the animals' relationship over the course of the encounter, one that often involves invariant bonds, say a nose-to-nose orientation, with many different movements performed by both partners acting to counteract each other's attempts to break or maintain the relationship. Moreover, these invariant bonds can switch from one configuration to another during an…

Bridging Lab and Life: A Dual-Person Paradigm for Social Interaction Research.

Interpersonal synchrony, the spontaneous coordination of actions, emotions, and physiological processes, plays a crucial role in social bonding. While existing research has significantly advanced our understanding of interpersonal synchrony, many studies rely on either artificial paradigms that may limit ecological validity or naturalistic approaches that can pose challenges for achieving sufficient statistical power. To address this, we developed and validated a semi-naturalistic verbal social interaction paradigm, in which two individuals talk about a variety of standardized neutral and auto…

Effect of social interaction negative affect on within-person mentalizing network connectivity.

Understanding others' intentions and emotions is supported by the mentalizing network, helping people navigate the inherently complex dynamics of social interactions. However, work investigating the mentalizing network often relies on non-naturalistic methods, limiting our understanding of individual differences most apparent within social interaction contexts. We took a naturalistic, multilevel approach to investigate relations between real-world affective expressions, social anxiety symptoms and mentalizing network connectivity. Same gender-identity friend pairs (40 participants; 62.5% Women…

Psychometric properties of the Dutch version of the social interaction vocabulary task.

INTRODUCTION: Social functioning is affected in various ways in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), and having tests available to assess aspects of social functioning increases the accuracy of diagnostic evaluation. One such aspect is having an accurate semantic representation of socio-emotional concepts. We designed a clinical test, the social interaction vocabulary task (SIVT), to capture this aspect. It requires participants to select a photo from a set of distractor photos that depicts a social interaction term most accurately, for example, the term "consoling." We showed i…

Audience reconstructed: social media interaction by BTS fans during live stream concerts.

COVID-19-motivated social distancing made online concerts common practice in 2020 and 2021, with millions logging into streaming sites to see their favorite artists perform in realtime. For some fans, watching alone at home may have been enough, but concert-concurrent surges of social media activity suggest many virtual performance attendees are doing more. To understand why fans would turn their attention from these precious performance streams to social media, we explored Twitter engagement during four live streamed concerts performed by the Kpop group BTS in 2021. In public Tweets sampled b

Using social interaction models for genetic analysis of skin damage in gilts.

BACKGROUND: Skin damage is a trait of economic and welfare importance that results from social interactions between animals. These interactions may produce wound signs on the gilt's skin as a result of damage behavior (i.e., fighting), biting syndromes (i.e., tail, vulva, or ear biting), and swine inflammation and necrosis syndrome. Although current selection for traits that are affected by social interactions primarily focuses on improving direct genetic effects, combined selection on direct and social genetic effects could increase genetic gain and avoid a negative response to selection in c…

Depression impacts the physiological responsiveness of mother-daughter dyads during social interaction.

BACKGROUND: Maternal depression is associated with increased risk of psychiatric illness in offspring. While risk may relate to depressed mothers' difficulties regulating emotions in the context of interacting with offspring, physiological indicators of emotion regulation have rarely been examined during mother-child interactions-and never among mother-adolescent dyads in which both mother and adolescent have histories of major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS: We examined changes in high-frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV), an indicator of parasympathetic (vagal) function that has be

The Reciprocal Relationship between Bipolar Disorder and Social Interaction: A Qualitative Investigation.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that social support can influence relapse rates, functioning and various clinical outcomes in people with bipolar disorder. Yet 'social support' is a poorly defined construct, and the mechanisms by which it affects illness course in bipolar disorder remain largely unknown. Key aims of this study were to ascertain which facets of social interaction affect mood management in bipolar disorder, and how symptoms of bipolar disorder can influence the level of support received. METHOD: Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with 20 individuals with bipola…
