Homelessness at the San Diego Central Library: Assessing the Potential Role of Social Workers.

Nationwide, public libraries are experiencing an increase in "on-premise" opioid overdoses and other issues (e.g., suicide attempts) affecting unstably housed library users. The public library presents a unique opportunity to access an otherwise hidden population. In partnership with the San Diego Central Library, researchers led focus groups, in-depth interviews, and surveys with 63 library patrons experiencing homelessness or housing instability (n = 49) and library staff (n = 14) (January-June 2019). Using a consensus organizing framework and mixed methods approach, the researchers conducte

Healthy worker effect and pregnancy: role of adverse obstetric history and social characteristics.

Data from a survey conducted in 1981 on a national sample of 5508 births in France were used to analyse the role of a history of previous adverse pregnancy outcome (spontaneous abortion, perinatal death or adverse fetal condition) in the selection mechanisms of women with regard to occupational activity, and the impact on the relation between work and preterm delivery. The study, carried out separately in each parity group, showed that occupational activity was associated with a more favourable outcome for women of parity one: the preterm delivery rate was significantly higher among women who

Stress identification for social workers in health care: a preventive approach to burn-out.

The primary goal of this paper is to present a paradigm for identifying specific stresses related to providing social services in health care settings that can then be the basis of a stress management program. The authors review the occupational stress literature, with special emphasis on two frameworks: James House' conceptual paradigm of the interactive perspective of stress and John Adams' typologies for the assessment of stress. The social work literature is also reviewed for the possible stressors specific to the social work profession. A new framework is presented and discussed that is e

The Mental Health Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Health and Social Care Workers.

The COVID-19 pandemic placed exceptional strain on essential services, raising urgent concerns about the mental well-being of workers in critical sectors. This study examines the short- and medium-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of health and social care (HSC) workers in the UK relative to other occupational groups. Using data from the UK Household Longitudinal Study and measuring mental health via the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ), we apply a difference-in-differences strategy, where both groups could be treated only in the second period (a pre-post design), to

Social identity and the prison health worker: Implications for practitioner satisfaction and turnover intentions.

BACKGROUND: Delivering health care within the prison walls poses distinct and arduous challenges to the practitioner. Correctional health workers regularly face issues of overcrowding, increased prevalence of infectious disease, advancing age, deteriorating conditions, and patients with an inclination for violence. Still, regardless of the sizeable workforce, costs, and impact on community well-being, correctional health is often overlooked in health services delivery research. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to better understand the unique nature of delivering services in the prison conte

Organizational policy recommendations for control of STI/HIV among female sex workers in China: regular examination of workers in social hygiene clinics.

This article aims to address female sex workers at high risk for contracting HIV in China by recommending evidence-based socio-structural interventions and policies at the national level that have yielded effective outcomes in other countries. National governments such as the Philippines and Hong Kong have utilized the Social Hygiene Clinic (SHC) model. A similar national policy can be highly effective in China. Evidence-based research study results indicate significant reductions in STI and consistent condom use among female sex workers in both China and the Philippines. Consistent condom use

For this study, baseline and 6-month follow-up data were collected from an HIV intervention study among migrant workers in South Florida (n = 270) who reported unprotected sex in the past 30 days. The Multigroup Identity Measure was

Dissociation in sexually abused Puerto Rican children: a replication utilizing social workers as informers.

This study explores dissociative symptoms in 3 different groups of Puerto Rican children. Data were collected on 40 children with documented sexual abuse history, 39 children with psychiatric disorders but without a history of sexual abuse, and 40 community control children. Dissociative symptoms were assessed with the child using the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children (TSCC); a social worker answered the Child Dissociative Checklist (CDC). Results indicated that children with sexual abuse obtained significantly different scores on both the TSCC and the CDC. Further analysis indicated that
