Analysis of the main passive soft tissues associated with adult acquired flatfoot deformity development: A computational modeling approach.

Adult acquired flatfoot deformity (AAFD) is a pathology with a wide range of treatment options. Physicians decide the best treatment based on their experience, so the process is entirely subjective. A better understanding of soft tissue stress and its contribution in supporting the plantar arch could help to guide the clinical decision. Traditional experimental trials cannot consistently evaluate the contribution of each tissue. Therefore, in this research a 3-Dimensional FE foot model was reconstructed from a normal patient in order to measure the stress of the passive stabilizers of the arch

Development of a computational biomechanical model of the human upper-airway soft-tissues toward simulating obstructive sleep apnea.

Numerous challenges are faced in investigations aimed at developing a better understanding of the pathophysiology of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The anatomy of the tongue and other upper-airway tissues, and the ability to model their behavior, are central to such investigations. We present details of the construction and development of a soft-tissue model of the human upper airway, with the ultimate goal of simulating obstructive sleep apnea. The steps taken to produce a representative anatomical geometry, of which the associated muscle histology is also captured, are documented. An overvie

Use of computed tomographic densitometry to quantify contrast enhancement of compressive soft tissues in the canine lumbosacral vertebral canal.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate computed tomography (CT) densitometry as a technique for quantifying contrast enhancement of compressive soft tissues in the canine lumbosacral vertebral canal and to determine whether the degree of contrast enhancement can be used to help predict tissue type or histopathologic characteristics. ANIMALS: 29 large breed dogs with lumbosacral stenosis. PROCEDURE: Contrast-enhanced CT of L5-S3 was performed by use of a previously described protocol. At each disk level, CT densities of a water-filled syringe, epaxial muscles, and 4 vertebral canal locations were measured.

In vitro comparison of the imaging properties of dental materials in soft tissue using ultrasonography and cone beam computed tomography.

Accurate imaging of displaced dental materials (DMs) in soft tissues is critical for diagnosis, treatment planning, and preventing complications. The aim of this study was to compare the cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and ultrasonography (USG) in detecting DMs embedded in soft tissues, as well as to characterize their imaging features. Fifteen DMs used in restorative, endodontic, orthodontic, and prosthetic procedures were placed in the alveolar mucosa and muscles. CBCT and USG images of DMs were obtained. Two dentomaxillofacial radiologists independently evaluated the images for detecta

Hard and Soft Tissue Asymmetry in Patients with Skeletal Class III Malocclusion: A Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Study.

This study aims to investigate hard and soft tissue asymmetry in skeletal Class III patients to elucidate how soft tissue thickness alters overall asymmetry and whether menton deviation is correlated with bilateral differences in hard and soft tissue prominence and soft tissue thickness. The cone-beam computed tomography data of 50 skeletal Class III adults were divided based on menton deviation into symmetric (n = 25; deviation ≤ 2.0 mm) and asymmetric (n = 25; deviation > 2.0 mm) groups. Forty-four corresponding hard and soft tissue points were identified. Bilateral hard and soft tissue prom

Growth of human renal carcinoma in soft agar colony formation assays measured by computer-assisted volume analysis.

Technical methods for assessing the growth and chemotherapy sensitivity of human tumor cells growing in soft-agar culture have been less than ideal. Within the past year, there have been reports of studying the extent of growth of human tumor cells in these cultures by quantitating the change in cumulative volume for the growth units observed. The present report describes the results of computer-assisted volume analysis applied to soft-agar cultures of cells from 74 primary renal cell carcinomas, 14 primary transitional cell carcinomas of the renal pelvis, and four different human renal cell c

Three-dimensional analysis of craniofacial bones and soft tissues in obstructive sleep apnea using cone beam computed tomography.

A total of 154 adult patients with sleep complaints underwent a polysomnography and a craniofacial cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). OSA was defined as an apnea and hypopnea index (AHI) or an oxygen desaturation index (ODI) ≥ 10. Soft tissues and craniofacial bones volumes were prospectively measured by CBCT and collected blindly from sleep polysomnography. Among the study patients, 127 (83%) suffered from OSA and 27 (17%) did not. OSA patients demonstrated a narrower maxillo-palatine core volume (11.7±3.2 vs 14.6±4.9cm3) even when adjusting for age, gender, height, neck circumference and

Influence of maxillary advancement surgery on skeletal and soft-tissue changes in the nose - a retrospective cone-beam computed tomography study.

OBJECTIVES: Surgical correction of skeletal maxillary retroposition is often associated with changes in the morphology of the nose. Unwanted alar flaring of the nose is observed in many cases. The aim of the present study was therefore to investigate the influence of surgical advancement of the maxilla on changes in the soft-tissue morphology of the nose. Having a coefficient that allows prediction of change in the nasal width in Caucasian patients after surgery would be helpful for treatment planning. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All 33 patients included in this retrospective study were of Caucasi
