GLP soil characterization--the laboratory.

Good laboratory practices (GLP) for field studies have been implemented to provide accurate and complete data in all phases of field trials, including the characterization of the soil where the test system is grown. The soil characterization analysis generally offers two packages or series of analyses from which the sponsor may select. The Series I soil characterization is more comprehensive than the Series II. The Series II characterization includes pH, percent organic matter, cation exchange capacity (CEC), bulk density, percent sand-silt-clay, U.S. Department of Agriculture textural class, …

Skeletal fluorosis from eating soil.

A woman with chronic pyelonephritis developed progressive muscular weakness and bone pain. For twenty years she had habitually ingested fluoride-rich soil. Osteosclerosis was found on x-ray examination, and fluorosis was confirmed by bone biopsy. Renal failure augmented skeletal retention of excessive fluoride intake which, in turn, appears to have intensified symptomatic renal osteodystrophy. Skeletal fluorosis from this unexpected source has not been previously described.

Soil column leaching of pesticides.

In this review, I address the practical and theoretical aspects of pesticide soil mobility.I also address the methods used to measure mobility, and the factors that influence it, and I summarize the data that have been published on the column leaching of pesticides.Pesticides that enter the unsaturated soil profile are transported downwards by the water flux, and are adsorbed, desorbed, and/or degraded as they pass through the soil. The rate of passage of a pesticide through the soil depends on the properties of the pesticide, the properties of the soil and the prevailing environmental conditi…

Investigation of irradiated soil byproducts.

The high dose irradiation of windblown soil deposited onto the surface of spent nuclear fuel is of concern to long-term fuel storage stability. Such soils could be exposed to radiation fields as great as 1.08 x 10(-3) C/kg-s (15,000 R/hr) during the 40-year anticipated period of interim dry storage prior to placement at the proposed national repository. The total absorbed dose in these cases could be as high as 5 x 10(7) Gy (5 x 10(9) rads). This investigation evaluated the potential generation of explosive or combustible irradiation byproducts during this irradiation. It focuses on the produc…

Myxobacters from arid mexican soil.

Myxobacters were found to be common inhabitants of the arid soils from the Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, area. Thirteen species of the genera Myxococcus, Archangium, Cystobacter, Stigmatella, Polyangium, and Chondromyces were isolated on a mineral salts agar supplemented with bakers' yeast and filter paper. Greater species diversity per soil sample was found in the region receiving 400 to 800 mm of annual rainfall as compared with soils from an area having only 200 to 400 mm of rainfall.

Perennial and annual cropping sequences differentially influence soil functionality in Luvisolic soils.

Diversified cropping systems are vital for improving soil properties and resilience. This study evaluated the impact of integrating perennial forage crops into annual systems under varying nitrogen (N) levels on a Luvisolic soil, utilizing 10-year experimental plots (2013-2023) in the Peace region of northwestern Canada. The experiment in a split-plot design with four replicates had eight cropping sequences as main plots and three N rates (0, 45, and 90 kg N ha- 1) as sub-plots. Soil samples from 0 to 15 cm depths collected in 2023 were analyzed for physical, chemical, and biological propertie…

Soil Basal Respiration as a Method to Determine The Influence of Soil Management and Microbial Activity.

Soil respiration represents the transfer of CO₂ from the soil to the atmosphere and is one of the largest terrestrial carbon fluxes after gross primary production. Because it is driven largely by the metabolic activity of soil organisms, it is widely recognized as a sensitive indicator of soil biological activity, carbon turnover, and the impacts of environmental or management-related disturbances. Soil respiration integrates multiple CO₂ sources, including autotrophic respiration from plant roots and rhizosphere microorganisms, and heterotrophic respiration associated with microbial decomposi…

Biodegradation of sulfonamide antibiotics by a soil bacteria enrichment and the impacts of soil organic matter.

Biodegradation plays a crucial role in the removal of sulfonamides (SAs) from soils; however, the biodegradation pathways in soils and the impacts of soil organic matter (SOM) on SA biodegradation remain unclear. Here, we used [phenyl-U-14C]-labeled SAs to investigate the degradation of sulfadiazine (SDZ), sulfamonomethoxine (SMM), and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in a soil-free enrichment culture derived from an SDZ-degrading soil microbial community in the absence or presence of soil humic acids and artificial root exudates. The culture utilized the individual SAs as the sole carbon source and min…

Unravelling biogeochemical drivers of methylmercury production in an Arctic fen soil and a bog soil.

Arctic tundra soils store a globally significant amount of mercury (Hg), which could be transformed to the neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) upon warming and thus poses serious threats to the Arctic ecosystem. However, our knowledge of the biogeochemical drivers of MeHg production is limited in these soils. Using substrate addition (acetate and sulfate) and selective microbial inhibition approaches, we investigated the geochemical drivers and dominant microbial methylators in 60-day microcosm incubations with two tundra soils: a circumneutral fen soil and an acidic bog soil, collected near Nome,…

An overview of electrokinetic soil flushing and its effect on bioremediation of hydrocarbon contaminated soil.

Combination of electrokinetic soil flushing and bioremediation (EKSF-Bio) technology has attracted many researchers attention in the last few decades. Electrokinetic is used to increase biodegradation rate of microorganisms in soil pores. Therefore, it is necessary to use solubilizing agents such as surfactants that can improve biodegradation process. This paper describes the basic understanding and recent development associated with electrokinetic soil flushing, bioremediation, and its combination as innovative hybrid solution for treating hydrocarbon contaminated soil. Surfactant has been wi…

Selenium and mercury in Brazilian Cerrado soils and their relationships with physical and chemical soil characteristics.

The objective of this study was to determine the natural concentrations of Hg and Se in 45 representative soil profiles from the Cerrado biome in central Brazil, and to correlate their concentrations with soil chemical and physical characteristics. The study area was composed of three sub-regions: Goiás, Northwest of Minas Gerais, and Minas Gerais Triangle. Selenium and Hg concentrations were determined by acid digestion and atomic absorption spectroscopy. Data were subjected to analysis of variance on the means of the Hg and Se variables within each soil class at two depths, followed by multi…

Remediation of sandy soils contaminated with hydrocarbons and halogenated hydrocarbons by soil vapour extraction.

This paper presents the study of the remediation of sandy soils containing six of the most common contaminants (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, trichloroethylene and perchloroethylene) using soil vapour extraction (SVE). The influence of soil water content on the process efficiency was evaluated considering the soil type and the contaminant. For artificially contaminated soils with negligible clay contents and natural organic matter it was concluded that: (i) all the remediation processes presented efficiencies above 92%; (ii) an increase of the soil water content led to a more time-co…

Soil contamination and infections by soil-transmitted helminths in an endemic village in southern Thailand.

The aim of this study was to test the association between soil contamination and infection of the household members by soil-transmitted helminths in dry and rainy seasons. A lake-side community in southern Thailand with a population of 2,340 was studied twice, in the dry season and rainy season of 1995. Fifty households were randomly selected. Soil samples near the latrine, in the yard, at the foot-washing area and under the trees were taken and analysed for presence of helminthic eggs. All members of the selected household were interviewed and stool samples obtained. Age-adjusted odds ratios …

Soil mineralogy-controlled phosphorus availability in soils mixed with phosphate fertiliser and biochar.

The biochar amendment to soil proved to be beneficial to improve soil quality and provide nutrients. However, the effect of biochar on the availability of P is still controversial. We aim to study the effect of adding phosphate fertiliser and biochar on the P bioavailability in soils of different mineralogies. Eight biochars derived from biomass (rice husk and coffee husk), soil (sandy and clayey), and phosphate fertiliser (triple superphosphate) were produced. The biochar enrichment process with superphosphate was carried out before and after pyrolysis. Thus, we tested two biochar groups: (1)…

Coupled effects of rainfall intensity and soil texture on nitrate behavior in unsaturated soil columns.

The vadose zone (VZ) mediates contaminant migration to aquifers, yet its attenuation efficiency under transient conditions remains poorly understood. Most studies have employed batch experiments at a fixed saturation degree, which could not capture the coupled effects of water and oxygen content under transient conditions. This study evaluated nitrate behavior using unsaturated soil columns packed with sandy loam (SL) and loamy sand (LS) subjected to infiltration rates of 6.25-75 mm/h for simulating the VZ environment. Water and oxygen contents were continuously monitored, and pore-water sampl…

Digging into Soil: Effects of Soil Texture on RT-QuIC Performance for Environmental Prion Surveillance.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease caused by infectious prions affecting wild and captive cervids. Transmission occurs directly between hosts or indirectly through contact with prion-contaminated environments. Soils, particularly those rich in clay, are hypothesized to enhance prion stability, retention, and bioavailability. Accurate detection of prions is therefore important for understanding environmental transmission risks. Real-time quaking-induced conversion (RT-QuIC) is a sensitive assay used to detect PrPCWD in tissue, excreta, and environmental materials…
