Static Magnetic Field Stimulation over Parietal Cortex Enhances Somatosensory Detection in Humans.

The role of neuronal oscillations in human somatosensory perception is currently unclear. To address this, here we use noninvasive brain sti … FICANCE STATEMENT Artificially increasing alpha power by placing a powerful magnetic field over the somatosensory cortex overcomes the natural decline in detection probability of a repeated near-threshold sensory stimulus.

Monosynaptic inputs to ErbB4-expressing inhibitory neurons in mouse primary somatosensory cortex.

Previous reports have described inputs to the somatosensory cortex (S1) in mouse or rat using retrograde or anterograde tracers. Such studies do not, however, reveal which particular cell types within the S1 cortex receive direct monosynaptic connections from these input sources. Here we describe the monosynaptic inputs to a subpopulation of mouse S1 inhibitory neurons that express ErbB4. We used a previously described "bridge protein," composed of the ErbB4 ligand, neuregulin (NRG1), fused to the avian viral receptor TVB (TVB-NRG1), along with EnvB pseudotyped lentivirus (LV) and rabies virus…

Functional reorganization of adult raccoon somatosensory cerebral cortex following neonatal digit amputation.

Amputation of a forepaw digit in raccoons 2-8 weeks of age produced dramatic changes in the functional organization of somatosensory cortex examined electrophysiologically 9-12 months later. The cortical region normally representing the digit that was amputated received widely overlapping input from the entire forepaw, with local disruption of somatotopic organization. Compared with normal animals, the receptive fields of cortical neurons in amputated animals were larger, often included both glabrous and hairy skin, sometimes involved discontinuous skin regions, and were much more variable in …

The somatosensory link in fibromyalgia: functional connectivity of the primary somatosensory cortex is altered by sustained pain and is associated with clinical/autonomic dysfunction.

OBJECTIVE: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic functional pain syndrome characterized by widespread pain, significant pain catastrophizing, sympathovagal dysfunction, and amplified temporal summation for evoked pain. While several studies have demonstrated altered resting brain connectivity in FM, studies have not specifically probed the somatosensory system and its role in both somatic and nonsomatic FM symptoms. Our objective was to evaluate resting primary somatosensory cortex (S1) connectivity and to explore how sustained, evoked deep tissue pain modulates this connectivity. METHODS: We acquir…

Ablations of areas 3b (SI proper) and 3a of somatosensory cortex in marmosets deactivate the second and parietal ventral somatosensory areas.

Partial ablations of specific parts of cortical areas 3b (SI proper) and 3a in marmosets were found to render somatotopically equivalent parts of two other cortical somatosensory fields, the second somatosensory area (SII) and the parietal ventral area (PV), unresponsive to peripheral stimulation. Microelectrode recordings in anesthetized marmosets first established the responsiveness and locations of the representations of body parts, including the hand in areas 3a and 3b, SII, and in some cases PV. The hand representations in areas 3a and 3b were then removed by aspiration. Immediately after

The role of the somatosensory cortex in self-paced movement impairment in Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work was to study the differences at the whole-brain level between self-paced and cued movement processing in Par … t frontal areas. CONCLUSION: A simplification of motor circuits and a hyperactivation of the right somatosensory cortex were observed in PD subjects. SIGNIFICANCE: Future studies should be focused on this area to confirm or disprove its role in FOG.

Movement representations in motor, somatosensory, and posterior parietal cortex of the greater galago.

Previous studies suggest that anterior parietal cortical areas including S1 (3b) play a central role in motor control that is distinct from traditionally defined motor areas of the neocortex (eg M1). The role of anterior parietal areas in generating movement has never been described in any prosimian primate, a lineage thought to reflect the last common ancestor of all living primates. This study describes movements elicited from long-train intracortical microstimulation in the greater galago (Otolemur garnettii) in area 3b and adjacent frontal and parietal cortical fields. We found that the re

Excitability of somatosensory cortex is increased in ALS: A SEP recovery function study.

OBJECTIVE: Neuronal loss in the somatosensory, as well as the motor cortex in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), indicative of a structural abnormality has been reported. Previously we have shown that afferent inhibition was impaired in ALS, suggestive of sensory involvement. In this study, we aimed to evaluate excitability changes in the somatosensory cortex of ALS patients. METHODS: ALS patients underwent a paired pulse somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) paradigm at various interstimulus intervals (ISI). The amplitude ratio obtained by dividing the amplitude of paired pulse SEP stimulat…

Functional organization of the human primary somatosensory cortex: A stereo-electroencephalography study.

OBJECTIVE: The classical homunculus of the human primary somatosensory cortex (S1) established by Penfield has mainly portrayed the functional organization of convexial cortex, namely Brodmann area (BA) 1. However, little is known about the functions in fissural cortex including BA2 and BA3. We aim at drawing a refined and detailed somatosensory homunculus of the entire S1. METHODS: We recruited 20 patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy who underwent stereo-electroencephalography for preoperative assessments. Direct electrical stimulation was performed for functional mapping. Montreal Ne…

Sense of external agency is sustained by multisensory functional integration in the somatosensory cortex.

"Sense of agency" (SoA), the feeling of control for events caused by one's own actions, is deceived by visuomotor incongruence. Sensorimotor networks are implicated in SoA, however little evidence exists on brain functionality during agency processing. Concurrently, it has been suggested that the brain's intrinsic resting-state (rs) activity has a preliminary influence on processing of agency cues. Here, we investigated the relation between performance in an agency attribution task and functional interactions among brain regions as derived by network analysis of rs functional magnetic resonanc

Investigating the effects of transcranial alternating current stimulation on primary somatosensory cortex.

Near-threshold tactile stimuli perception and somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold (STDT) are encoded in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) and largely depend on alpha and beta S1 rhythm. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is a non-invasive neurophysiological technique that allows cortical rhythm modulation. We investigated the effects of tACS delivered over S1 at alpha, beta, and gamma frequencies on near-threshold tactile stimuli perception and STDT, as well as phase-dependent tACS effects on near-threshold tactile stimuli perception in healthy subjects. In sep…

Layer 4 organization and respiration locking in the rodent nose somatosensory cortex.

Rodents and other mammals acquire sensory information by precisely orchestrated head, whisker, and respiratory movements. We have, however, only limited information about integration of these signals. In the somatosensory domain, the integration of somatosensory information with other modalities is particularly pertinent for body parts such as eyes, ears, and nose, which serve another modality. Here we analyzed the nose/nostril representation in the rodent somatosensory cortex. We identified the representation of the nose/nostril in the rat somatosensory cortex by receptive field mapping and s…

Abnormal activation of the primary somatosensory cortex in spasmodic dysphonia: an fMRI study.

Spasmodic dysphonia (SD) is a task-specific focal dystonia of unknown pathophysiology, characterized by involuntary spasms in the laryngeal … ing asymptomatic tasks. Increased activation intensity in SD patients was found only in the primary somatosensory cortex during symptomatic voice production, which showed a tendency for correlation with ADSD symptoms. Both SD groups had lower correlation of activation intensities between the primary motor and sensory cortices and additional correlations between the ba …

Mastication-related neurons in the orofacial first somatosensory cortex of awake cats.

In the orofacial area of the first somatosensory cortex (SI), we recorded single unit activity from 699 neurons in 11 awake cats. Fifty-two percent (362/699) were mastication-related neurons (MRNs) showing activity related to some aspects of masticatory movements. MRNs were divided into three types by their activity patterns: (1) the rhythmical type, showing rhythmical bursts in pace with the masticatory rhythm; (2) the sustained type, showing a sustained firing during the period of taking food and (3) the transient (biting) type, showing intense discharges in coincidence with biting hard food…

Neuronal activity in normal and deafferented forelimb somatosensory cortex of the awake cat.

Three hundred and seventy-three neurons were recorded from the forelimb representation in the primary somatosensory cortex of unanesthetized, quietly resting adult cats. Of these, 177 were studied from 2 days to 3 weeks after transection of the radial, median and ulnar nerves. Following deafferentation the proportion of cells without receptive fields increased from 24 to 82%, however, the average rate of spontaneous activity did not change nor did the probability of encountering a neuron with a receptive field as a function of depth. Receptive field sizes increased dramatically following deaff…

Cytoarchitecture and responsiveness of the medial ansate region of the cat primary somatosensory cortex.

To understand its relationship to somatosensory areas in other species, we studied the rostral bank of the medial ansate sulcus in adult cat … a mediolateral band serving joint afferents as is reported in primates. These data suggest that cat somatosensory cortex differs in some ways from primates but that it contains multiple representations of the body, as do most other mammals.

X-ray diffraction reveals alterations in mouse somatosensory cortex following sensory deprivation.

BACKGROUND: Sensory experience impacts brain development. In the mouse somatosensory cortex, sensory deprivation via whisker trimming induces reductions in the perineuronal net, the size of neuronal cell bodies, the size and orientation of dendritic arbors, the density of dendritic spines, and the level of myelination, among other effects. NEW METHODS: Using a custom-developed laboratory diffractometer, we measured the X-ray diffraction patterns of mouse brain tissue to establish a novel method for examining nanoscale brain structures. Two groups of mice were examined: a control group and one…
