Short-term foetal immobility temporally and progressively affects chick spinal curvature and anatomy and rib development.

Congenital spine deformities may be influenced by movements in utero, but the effects of foetal immobility on spine and rib development remain unclear. The purpose of the present study was to determine (1) critical time-periods when rigid paralysis caused the most severe disruption in spine and rib development and (2) how the effects of an early, short-term immobilisation were propagated to the different features of spine and rib development. Chick embryos were immobilised once per single embryonic day (E) between E3 and E6 and harvested at E9. To assess the ontogenetic effects following singl

Comparison of spinal curvature parameters as determined by the ZEBRIS spine examination method and the Cobb method in children with scoliosis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The most common and gold standard method to diagnose and follow-up on scoliosis treatment is to capture biplanar X-ray images and then use these to determine the sagittal frontal spinal curvature angles by the Cobb method. Reducing exposure to radiation is an important aspect for consideration, especially regarding children. The ZEBRIS spinal examination method is an external, non-invasive measurement method that uses an ultrasound-based motion analysis system. The aim of this study is to compare angle values of patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) determ

Influence of trunk muscle co-contraction on spinal curvature during sitting reclining against the backrest of a chair.

Today, many office workers frequently adopt a relaxed or slumped sitting posture for many hours, and often people tend to spend their leisure time reclining against the backrest of a chair while sitting for a long time, as when watching television. While sitting, the pelvis rotates backwardly, and lumbar lordosis is flattened. Simultaneously, the load on the intervertebral discs and spine increases. Sitting in a slumped position is known to increase disc pressure even more, and to aggravate chronic low back pain (CLBP). Therefore, it is very important to teach workers and often people about th

Somatic features and parameters of anterior-posterior spinal curvature in 7-year-olds with particular posture types.

Background. One of the key elements in the examination and evaluation of body posture is defining the shape and size of anterior-posterior curvature of the spine and the location of symmetrical bone points in the trunk area. The aim of our study was to determine which somatic features and parameters of spinal curvature in the sagittal plane show statistically significant differences among children with given types of body posture. Material and methods. We examined 298 children (146 boys and 152 girls) attending four primary schools in Wroclaw, Poland. The examinations were carried out in speci

Correlation between backpack weight and way of carrying, sagittal and frontal spinal curvatures, athletic activity, and dorsal and low back pain in schoolchildren and adolescents.

This cross-sectional study was carried out to investigate any correlation between backpack carrying, spinal curvatures, and athletic activities on schoolchildren's dorsal (DP) and low back pain (LBP). Three thousand four hundred forty-one students aged from 9 to 15 years who carried backpacks to school were included in this study and asked for DP and LBP experiences in the school period while carrying the backpack. Nonradiating methods (surface back contour analysis) were used to indirectly measure frontal spinal curve (scoliosis) with the scoliometer and lateral curves (thoracic kyphosis and

Test-retest reliability and validity of a motion capture (MOCAP) system for measuring thoracic and lumbar spinal curvatures and sacral inclination in the sagittal plane.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the test-retest reliability and validity of the MOCAP system for measuring spinal sagittal thoracic and lumbar curvatures and sacral inclination in a standing posture. METHODS: Twenty-five male adults were evaluated on lateral standing radiographs. The thoracic and lumbar curvatures were calculated by Harrison's posterior tangent method. The sacral inclination was defined as the angle between the tangent line of the sacral and vertical plane. In addition, MOCAP was used to calculate the spinal curvatures and sacral inclination. RESULTS: The thoracic and lumbar spine an

Evaluation of spinal internal loads and lumbar curvature under holding static load at different trunk and knee positions.

A study was performed to investigate how different trunk and knee positions while holding static loads affect the lumbar curvature and internal loads on the lumbar spine at L4-L5. Ten healthy male subjects participated in this study. Two inclinometers were used to evaluate the curvature of lumbar spine, lordosis, while a 3D static biomechanical model was used to predict the spinal compression and shear forces at L4-L5. Eighteen static tasks while holding three level of load (0, 10 and 20 kg), two levels of knee position (45 and 180 degrees of flexion) and three levels of trunk position (neutra

Automatic radiation-free evaluation of Cobb angle for spinal curvature based on fringe projection profilometry and deep learning technology.

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric scoliosis is the most prevalent spinal disorder, often leading to abnormal curvature and deformation of the spine. Early detection is essential for timely intervention, particularly in growing adolescents. In this study, we present a novel, fully automated, radiation-free method for Cobb angle evaluation, combining fringe projection profilometry with deep learning technologies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A three-dimensional reconstruction of the participant's back surface is achieved using a seven-step phase-shifting algorithm. Convolutional neural networks are then utilized

Investigating the relationship between sagittal spinal curvature and fall incidence and fall risk among elderly nursing home residents.

UNLABELLED: Designing appropriate diagnostic and treatment methods to reduce fall risk and improve quality of life, as well as reduce the cost of care in elderlies. Our findings have potential for early diagnosis of those with a high probability of falling based on fairly simple clinical measures of hyperkyphosis, forward head, and lordosis. INTRODUCTION: Poor balance is an underlying cause of falling in the elderly, for which a change in the natural curvature of the spine plays a major role. Little is known about the relationship between spinal curvatures and fall incidence in this populatio

Radiographic characterisation of spinal curvature development in farmed New Zealand Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha throughout seawater production.

Spinal anomalies are a recognised source of downgrading in finfish aquaculture, but identifying their cause(s) is difficult and often requires extensive knowledge of the underlying pathology. Late-onset spinal curvatures (lordosis, kyphosis, scoliosis) can affect up to 40% of farmed New Zealand Chinook (king) salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) at harvest, but little is known about their pathogenesis. Curvature development was radiographically documented in two related cohorts of commercially-farmed Chinook salmon throughout seawater production to determine (1) the timing of radiographic onset a
