Starvation symptoms in patients with anorexia nervosa: a longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the change in starvation symptoms over time and their role as potential predictors of change in eating disorder and general psychopathology in patients with anorexia nervosa treated by means of intensive enhanced cognitive behavioral therapy (ICBT-E). METHOD: Ninety adult female patients with anorexia nervosa (63 restricting type and 27 binge-eating/purging type) were recruited. Body mass index (BMI), Eating Disorder Examination (EDE) interview, Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q), Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) and Starvation Symp…

Effect of acute starvation on plasma fibronectin response to sepsis.

There is evidence that undernutrition may contribute to the reduction in plasma fibronectin concentration and the depression of the reticuloendothelial (RE) system associated with severe sepsis. We have investigated the effects of fasting, surgical trauma and sepsis on plasma fibronectin concentrations and RE function. In experiment 1, plasma fibronectin was measured in rabbits (n = 14) before and 48 h after fasting. In experiment 2, sepsis was induced by devascularization of the appendix in animals on a normal diet (sepsis group, n = 7). A third group of animals underwent only a laparotomy (l

Effect of starvation on hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid function in the rat.

Total starvation in the rat for 2 days did not alter the hypothalamic content of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), but did decrease both pituitary TSH content and serum TSH concentration. Five days starvation resulted in a significant decrease in serum TSH and a slightly enhanced serum TSH response to exogenous TRH, suggesting that the pituitary retains its sensitivity to TRH. Fasting for 5 days resulted in a decreased 1 and 4th, but an increased 24th thyroid 131I uptake. Other starvation-induced abnormalities of intrathyroid 131I metabolism were a consistent increase in the percent of orga…

Responses to nutrient starvation in the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe.

In nature, nutrient-poor environments are more common than exposure to nutrient-rich environments, and living organisms have developed countermeasures to survive nutrient starvation. Increasing research has revealed beneficial aspects of starvation for an individual's life, including lifespan extension. The fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe is a model unicellular eukaryotic organism and has greatly contributed to the understanding of various cellular processes, including the cell cycle, cell morphology, sexual development, cell lifespan, and nutritional responses. Traditionally, research…

Anorexia: A perverse effect of attempting to control the starvation response.

Starvation arouses evolved protective mechanisms including binge eating and increased metabolic efficiency and fat storage. When aroused by dieting, the experiences of out-of-control eating, increased appetite, and increased fat storage arouse greater fears of obesity, spurring renewed attempts to restrict intake severely. The resulting positive feedback cycle escalates into bulimia for many, and anorexia in a few.

mTORC1 phosphorylation sites encode their sensitivity to starvation and rapamycin.

The mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) complex 1 (mTORC1) protein kinase promotes growth and is the target of rapamycin, a clinically useful drug that also prolongs life span in model organisms. A persistent mystery is why the phosphorylation of many bona fide mTORC1 substrates is resistant to rapamycin. We find that the in vitro kinase activity of mTORC1 toward peptides encompassing established phosphorylation sites varies widely and correlates strongly with the resistance of the sites to rapamycin, as well as to nutrient and growth factor starvation within cells. Slight modifications of …

Child starvation and neglect: a report of two fatal cases.

Fatal starvation is a rare cause of death in industrialised countries. In such cases, investigation of death is never an easy task for forensic pathologists who need to couple autopsy findings with full investigation of the crime scene and family record to establish if death results from deliberate neglect, maltreatment and withholding of food. The present article describes two cases of death caused by child neglect. The first case involved a 16-month-old female who died from starvation with dehydration as a contributing factor. In the second case a 7-year-old girl died from ultimate aspiratio…

The effect of starvation stress on the protein profiles in Flexibacter chinensis.

BACKGROUND: Analysis of many proteins produced during the transition into the stationary phase and under stress conditions (including starvation stress) demonstrated that a number of novel proteins were induced in common to each stress and could be the reason for cross-protection in bacterial cells. It is necessary to investigate the synthesis of these proteins during different stress conditions. METHODS: The changes in protein profile of Flexibacter chinensis at various stages of the starvation process and the other stresses were investigated using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis which h…

Rhizobacterial glutathione levels as affected by starvation and cadmium exposure.

The rhizosphere is a continuously fluctuating environment in which severe stresses are put on its inhabitants, and glutathione, a reducing tripeptide, and related compounds probably have important roles in cellular protection. In the present study the metabolism of glutathione was examined in rhizobacteria subjected to stress. The plant-growth-promoting rhizobacterium Pseudomonas fluorescens 5.014 and its mutant 5-2/4 were exposed to starvation, either by resuspension or exhaustion, and to cadmium. Glutathione levels, cell protein, and viable count were determined and compared in different con…

Effect of hyperventilation and starvation on rat lung mechanics and surfactant.

We studied the effects of hyperventilation and starvation on rat lung mechanics and surfactant. We hyperventilated lungs by excising and ventilating them at 3 times the normal tidal volume. Three days starvation reduced the alveolar pool of disaturated phosphatidyl choline by about 20% but did not significantly reduce the functional residual capacity. Air and saline deflation pressure-volume curves were performed in 4 groups: control lungs, lungs from starved rats, hyperventilated lungs, and hyperventilated lungs from starved rats. The area under each curve was calculated; this indicated the r…

[Citrate content in the myocardium and liver of rabbits in starvation and thyrotoxicosis].

Under starvation in rabbit blood plasma an increase in content of free fatty acids was accompanied by accumulation of citrate in myocardium and by maintenance of glycogen content in the organ. Contents of glycogen and citrate were decreased in liver tissue. In blood plasma under thyreotoxicosis an increase in concentration of free fatty acids was followed by decrease in contents of glycogen and citrate both in myocardium and in liver tissue. Under thyreotoxicosis the absence of the glycogenolysis block was associated with non-accumulation of citrate in myocardium. Difference in metabolic patte…

Severe non-diabetic ketoacidosis due to starvation and Graves' disease.

Starvation-induced non-diabetic ketoacidosis (NDKA) is a typically mild condition. Here, we report life-threatening NDKA induced by a brief period of starvation in a patient with undiagnosed hyperthyroidism. A Japanese woman in her mid-30s, with intellectual disabilities and selective mutism, presented with a 3 day history of vomiting and anorexia. She developed severe high-anion-gap metabolic acidosis, marked by elevated serum ketone bodies and normal blood glucose levels. Furthermore, mild-to-moderate hyperthyroidism was detected, which was later diagnosed as Graves' disease. The patient req…

Nicotinic acid receptor agonists impair myocardial contractility by energy starvation.

Nicotinic acid receptor agonists have previously been shown to cause acute reductions in cardiac contractility. We sought to uncover the changes in cardiac metabolism underlying these alterations in function. In nine humans, we recorded cardiac energetics and function before and after a single oral dose of nicotinic acid using cardiac MRI to demonstrate contractile function and Phosphorus-31 (31 P) magnetic resonance spectroscopy to demonstrate myocardial energetics. Nicotinic Acid 400 mg lowered ejection fraction by 4% (64 ± 8% to 60 ± 7%, P = .03), and was accompanied by a fall in phosphocre

Phosphate starvation enhances phagocytosis of Mycobacterium bovis/BCG by macrophages.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis is an important health problem worldwide. The only available vaccine is M. bovis/BCG, an attenuated mycobacterium that activates the innate and the acquired immune system after being phagocytosed by macrophages and dendritic cells. Vaccination fails to prevent adult pulmonary tuberculosis although it may have a protective effect in childhood infection. Understanding how BCG interacts with macrophages and other immunocompetent cells is crucial to develop new vaccines. RESULTS: In this study we showed that macrophages phagocytose M. bovis/BCG bacilli with higher efficie

Endogenous metabolism of Candidatus Accumulibacter phosphatis under various starvation conditions.

The endogenous processes of Candidatus Accumulibacter phosphatis (referred to as Accumulibacter), a known polyphosphate-accumulating organism (PAO) responsible for enhanced biological phosphorus removal systems (EBPR), were characterized during 8-day starvation under anaerobic, anoxic, aerobic and intermittent aerobic-anaerobic conditions. A lab-scale EBPR culture with Accumulibacter representing over 85% of the entire bacterial population as quantified with fluorescence in-situ hybridization was used in the study. Cell decay rates were found to be negligible under anaerobic and anoxic conditi…
