Coronary artery disease is the number 1 killer of Americans. There are many efforts underway to prevent and treat this life-threatening disease. One such treatment is the placement of drug-eluting stents. However, recent reports that show an increased risk of potentially life-threatening complications associated with drug-eluting stents have surfaced. This article provides a brief overview of research performed concerning the risks of drug-eluting stents.

The implantation of intracoronary stents for the treatment of coronary atherosclerotic disease is one of the most common percutaneous procedures. While the procedure brings long-term benefit for a large percentage of patients, a significant number of patients experience in-stent restenosis (ISR). ISR may be caused by a number of biological and procedural factors, including lesion characteristics as well as co-existing disease states like diabetes. Many strategies have been developed to try to reduce the incidence of ISR. The primary methods include systemic pharmacologic treatments, as well as

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of bacterial stent colonization and stent-associated bacteriuria, and to evaluate the significance of urinary cultures for identification of colonizing microorganisms.
METHODS: A total of 93 ureteral stents from 71 patients were examined: 9 patients with permanent ureteral stenting due to malignant ureteral obstruction (27 stents), and 62 patients with temporary ureteral stents (66 stents).
RESULTS: Bacteriuria and bacterial stent colonization were found in all patients with permanent stents. In patients with temporary stents, col

OBJECTIVE: To report our experience with metallic self-expanding stents in the palliative care of patients with ureteric obstruction caused by advanced pelvic malignancy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seven patients (five men and two women, mean age 72.8 years, range 58-88) with ureteric obstruction caused by advanced pelvic malignancy were evaluated. Self-expanding metallic Memotherm stents (Angiomed, Karlsruhe, Germany) were deployed using an antegrade approach in all patients. Patients were followed for a mean (range) of 9 (4-13) months to assess renal function and survival.
RESULTS: All seven pa

Prostatic obstruction of urinary flow is a common age-related event resulting in both troublesome symptoms and retention of urine. There have been recent developments in the management of such patients by inserting metallic stents or by balloon dilatation of the prostatic urethra. The role of these treatments as alternatives to surgery is evaluated and some of the difficulties encountered in their usage are described in this article.

Peripheral endovascular stents serve as a durable scaffold to limit abrupt vessel closure following balloon angioplasty. Their performance is not only derived from basic physical and three-dimensional properties but also influenced by their composition-features that include metallic alloy, stent geometry, and type of coating. In addition, peripheral stents are divided into balloon-expandable (BX) and self-expanding subtypes, each with specific physical characteristics that direct their use in distinct vascular beds. This study also evaluates the clinical use of various BX and self-expandable s

OBJECTIVE: Healing processes, particularly reendothelialization, are essential for vascular homeostasis after plain old balloon angioplasty and stent implantation. Drug-eluting stents (DES) are commonly used for percutaneous coronary intervention because restenosis rates are reduced as compared with bare metal stents (BMS). However, in addition to understanding the nature of regenerated endothelial cells, concerns over incomplete stent healing persist, and the molecular effects of antiproliferative drug coatings on endothelium remain poorly understood. APPROACH AND RESULTS: We used the rabbit

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of antimicrobial [silver sulfadiazine (SSD)]-coated ureteral stents with non-coated stents in the prevention of stent-related bacteriuria.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted between September 2014 and September 2016 after approval from the local ethics committee. Inclusion criteria were adults who underwent unilateral double-J ureteral stent placement after ureteroscopic lithotripsy. All patients underwent placement of the same stent type (Carbothan® with hydrophilic surface) and dimensions (6 F, 26 c

BACKGROUND: The comparative effectiveness of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with drug-eluting stents (DES) versus bare metal stents (BMS) has not been studied in the kidney transplant population.
METHODS: Using the US Renal Data System, we identified 3245 kidney transplant patients who underwent PCI between April 2003 and December 2010; 2400 and 845 patients received DES and BMS, respectively. We used propensity score matching and inverse probability of treatment weighting to create DES- and BMS-treated groups whose observed baseline characteristics were well-balanced. The associati

BACKGROUND: Long-term (>3 years) outcomes of drug-eluting stents (DES) versus bare-metal stents (BMS) in large coronary arteries were not conclusive. In addition, large coronary vessels were defined using a wide size range (≥3.0 mm) in previous studies. The aim of this study was to assess the long-term efficacy of DES versus BMS in subgroups of different vessel sizes.
METHODS: A total of 1096 patients (1342 lesions) who underwent either DES or BMS implantation in large coronary vessels was followed for a mean duration of 4.5 years. Patients were divided into 4 subgroups by the reference vesse

BACKGROUND: Decreased estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is a strong predictor of both mortality and subsequent cardiac events after percutaneous coronary intervention. The safety and efficacy of drug-eluting (DESs) versus bare-metal stents (BMSs) in this population have not been evaluated adequately.
STUDY DESIGN: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
SETTING & POPULATION: Studies involving the comparison of clinical outcomes between DESs and BMSs in patients with eGFR <60 mL/min/1.73 m(2). Studies exclusively involving patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction were

BACKGROUND: There is limited data on the magnitude of the problem of drug-eluting stent (DES) thrombosis in the Asian population.
HYPOTHESIS: We evaluated the long-term clinical outcomes of DES vs bare metal stents (BMS) in Chinese patients.
METHODS: From January 2002 to October 2005, 1236 consecutive patients underwent percutaneous coronary intervention with DES or BMS coronary stent implantation at our institution. We analyzed major clinical end points like all-cause mortality, cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, target lesion revascularization (TLR), and stent thrombosis.

Intravascular ultrasound studies have shown that additional stent implantation is the only percutaneous technique that allows for recovery of all the lumen area of the original implantation procedure. Despite this theoretical advantage, information on systematic additional stent implantation is still forthcoming, especially concerning the impact of new stent designs. This prospective study evaluated the efficacy of routine additional stent implantation for treatment of in-stent restenosis in 68 consecutive patients. Repeat stenting was successful in all cases, and second-generation tubular ste

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to compare the risk of stent thrombosis among patients treated with bare-metal stents (BMS), first-generation drug-eluting stents (G1-DES), and second-generation drug-eluting stents (G2-DES) for a period of 3 years.
BACKGROUND: In patients undergoing coronary stenting, there is a scarcity of long-term follow-up data on cohorts large enough to compare rates of stent thrombosis across the stent generations.
METHODS: A total of 18,334 patients undergoing successful coronary stent implantation from 1998 to 2011 at 2 centers in Munich, Germany, were included in this

BACKGROUND: Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) capturing stents were developed to enhance endothelial repair and reduce the risk of stent thrombosis, addressing limitations of Sirolimus-Eluting Stents (SES). This study aims to compare the safety and efficacy of EPC stents versus SES in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
METHODS: We performed a meta-analysis following PRISMA guidelines in patients undergoing PCI treated with Sirolimus eluting stent (SES) vs the use of EPC stents and recognized 8 clinical trials with patients undergoing PCI and reporting outcomes suc
