Pathogenesis and preventions of denture stomatitis.

Denture stomatitis (DS) is one of the frequent oral diseases caused by multiple factors among denture wearers and is an erythematous lesion of the mucosa in the denture-bearing area, which is a limited and non-specific damage that seriously endangers the oral health of denture wearers. Traditional drug treatment for DS is effective, but it is prone to the development of drug-resistant strains. Therefore, it is important to find new treating options. For the prevention and treatment of DS, there are various methods such as direct administration of azole and polyene antibiotics to the mucosal le…

Paraneoplastic bullous stomatitis in a horse.

An adult horse with a 2-month history of anorexia, ataxia, and oral blisters had developed these clinical signs just prior to the appearance and growth of a cervical mass. Bullous stomatitis was characterized histologically as subepidermal clefting. Clinical signs were unresponsive to treatment with antibiotics or corticosteroids; however, surgical removal of the mass coincided with remission of all signs. Histologic findings of the mass were consistent with hemangiosarcoma. Results of indirect immunofluorescence and immunoprecipitation on frozen serum from the horse were characteristic of par…

Necrotizing stomatitis in the developed world.

We present a case of a malnourished 68-year old man with occult hypothyroidism who presented with malaise, pyrexia, tongue swelling, oral ulceration and dysphagia after a 6-month period of increasing lethargy and failing self-care. Severe necrotic oral ulcerative lesions were accompanied by cutaneous purpura, blood-filled blisters and bedsores. It was concluded that the patient's clinical condition reflected necrotizing stomatitis on a background of malnutrition with scorbutic skin lesions and hypothyroidism. The patient made a good recovery with scrupulous oral hygiene, debridement, intraveno…

[Stomatitis and ageusia induced by candesartan].

Cases of dysgeusia or ageusia have been reported in patients treated with angiotensin II receptor antagonist such as losartan (5 cases), valsartan (1 case), eprosartan (1 case). This is the first case-report of ageusia following candesartan. A 46-year-old-male patient, with a medical history of renal chronic reject allograft disease, started candesartan 4 mg once daily to treat high blood pressure. Six months later, a progressive ageusia occurred with a burning mouth syndrome. He also developed aphthous ulcers of the mouth, stomatitis and perleche, which led him to lose 8 kilos within 13 month…

[Stomatitis in childhood, not always benign].

Two boys of 1 and 16 year had painful buccal lesions and were admitted for dehydration. The younger had finger and toe blisters; the older, severely ill, had conjunctivitis, urethritis and skin lesions. Only symptomatic treatment with lidocaine gel and paracetamol gave good recovery. A 5-year-old Turkish girl had recurrent painful buccal ulcers which each time cleared up spontaneously. Stomatitis is common in childhood. Viral infections are the most common causes of stomatitis, in particular infections with herpes simplex virus (herpes gingivostomatitis), Coxsackie virus (herpangina, hand-foot…

In Trinidad: angular stomatitis and pregnancy.

Riboflavin deficiency is endemic in Trinidad. A syndrome is observed peculiar to pregnancy. It occurs in the second trimester in women with low blood riboflavin levels. Treatment with riboflavin gives clinical improvement in mothers and raises fetal blood levels. Early biochemical diagnosis and treatment of subclinical deficiency is of value to the Trinidadian mother but protection to the fetus is doubtful. This is because of the effect of multiple limiting factors in which the mother is deficient.

TRIM69 Inhibits Vesicular Stomatitis Indiana Virus.

Vesicular stomatitis Indiana virus (VSIV), formerly known as vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) Indiana (VSVIND), is a model virus that is exceptionally sensitive to the inhibitory action of interferons (IFNs). Interferons induce an antiviral state by stimulating the expression of hundreds of interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs). These ISGs can constrain viral replication, limit tissue tropism, reduce pathogenicity, and inhibit viral transmission. Since VSIV is used as a backbone for multiple oncolytic and vaccine strategies, understanding how ISGs restrict VSIV not only helps in understanding VSI…
