A novel prognostic biomarker for recurrent aphthous stomatitis: calprotectin.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate whether there is a correlation between serum calprotectin concentration and oral ulcer activity in patients with active recurrent aphthous stomatitis. METHOD: This prospective, cross-sectional, historical cohort study included 52 patients (26 with active lesions and 26 with inactive lesions) with recurrent aphthous stomatitis and 27 healthy volunteers. The relationship between the groups was statistically evaluated in terms of serum calprotectin level and other inflammatory parameters. RESULTS: The median calprotectin value of the active lesion group

Vitamin D levels in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

BACKGROUND: Lower serum vitamin D levels, a major public health problem worldwide, has been found to be associated with various infectious diseases, cancers, autoimmune and dermatological diseases. The serum levels of vitamin D in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis are not clear. We investigated the vitamin D levels in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis. METHODS: Forty patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis (Group I) and 70 healthy controls (Group II) included in the study. The characteristics of aphthous lesions (duration of disease and remission, frequency, diameter a

Enzymatic antioxidants status in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

BACKGROUND: Oxidative stress (OS) has been thought to play a main role in the etiopathogenesis of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS), which is one of the most common oral mucosal diseases characterized by recurrent and painful oral ulcers. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the enzymatic antioxidants status in patients with RAS in the active stage and remission stage. METHODS: Ninety-seven patients with idiopathic minor RAS and 102 race-, age- and gender-matched healthy individuals were recruited. All these subjects were allocated to three groups: RAS patients with active lesion (

Validation of anamnestic diagnostic criteria for recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is characterized by painful recurrent oral ulcers and is typically diagnosed via history and clinical examination. Our aim was to validate a set of anamnestic diagnostic criteria (RASDX) to increase the accuracy of RAS diagnosis, particularly when a clinical examination is not feasible. METHODS: Participants were enrolled during an unmatched case-control study. RASDX consisted of an initial phone screening using standardized questionnaires and recognition of RAS photographs in the clinic. The proportion of agreement with an examination by an ora

Topical minocycline for managing symptoms of recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common ulcerative condition of the oral mucosa. In this study, minocycline oral rinses were compared to a placebo in patients suffering from frequent episodes of RAS. Thirty-three patients with RAS were randomly allocated to topical therapy with 0.2% minocycline or a placebo aqueous solution mouthwash. Seven patients also participated in a blind crossover study. The intensity of pain was recorded daily using a visual analogue scale. Minocycline mouthwashes resulted in significant reduction in the severity and duration of pain due to RAS. The findings in

Immunopathogenesis of oral lichen planus and recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

Oral mucosal bullous/desquamative/ulcerative diseases involve immunopathological mechanisms that account for loss of adhesion between contiguous keratinocytes or to structures within the basal lamina. Some are antibody mediated, in which specific adhesion molecules of the desmosome, hemidesmosome, and basement membrane become antigenic targets. Oral lichen planus and recurrent apthous ulcers, although manifesting disparate clinical appearances and natural history, share immunopathological features that involve T cell-mediated immunity. Although the antigens, haptens, or autoantigens are not us

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis: clinical characteristics and associated systemic disorders.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS), commonly known as canker sores, has been reported as recurrent oral ulcers, recurrent aphthous ulcers, or simple or complex aphthosis. RAS is the most common inflammatory ulcerative condition of the oral mucosa in North American patients. One of its variants is the most painful condition of the oral mucosa. Recurrent aphthous stomatitis has been the subject of active investigation along multiple lines of research, including epidemiology, immunology, clinical correlations, and therapy. Clinical evaluation of the patient requires correct diagnosis of RAS and

Role of mucosal injury in initiating recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

The buccal mucosa of 30 patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis and 15 healthy controls was injured by suture and penetration with a tenaculum and a hypodermic needle and each of the six puncture wounds produced monitored for up to seven days for the development of ulcers. Altogether 26 lesions were induced in 13 patients, whereas none occurred in the controls (p less than 0.001). Sutures caused most of the lesions (15), and those so induced had a mean maximum diameter of 2.3 mm and lasted for an average of four days. Ulcers induced mechanically were clinically indistinguishable from those

Evaluation of biochemical variables in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

PURPOSE: We investigated the effects of various biochemical agents on the etiopathogenesis of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). METHODS: We enrolled 70 RAS patients and 70 healthy volunteers. Peripheral venous blood samples were collected. We performed complete blood counts, then measured the levels of ferritin, vitamin B12, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, thyroid-stimulating hormone, T3, T4, and 25-hydroxy D3. RESULTS: The groups did not differ in terms of age (p = 0.912) or sex (p = 0.612). The levels of ferritin and 25-hydroxy vitamin D were significantly lower in RAS patients (b

A case report of pernicious anemia and recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

AIM: The aim of this report is to present the management of a patient with pernicious anemia afflicted with recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). BACKGROUND: RAS is one of the most common lesions of the oral mucosa. Although the exact etiology of RAS is still unknown different hematinic deficiencies have been proposed. CASE REPORT: Painful recurrent ulcers covered with a grayish pseudomembrane surrounded by an erythematous margin were identified on the tongue and in the buccal mucosa of a 71-year-old woman. The patient also presented with depapilation of the tongue. The clinical diagnosis was

Lack of effect of oral acyclovir on prevention of aphthous stomatitis.

Aphthous stomatitis (canker sores) is a common cause of recurrent mouth ulceration. The effect of long-term oral acyclovir therapy on aphthous stomatitis recurrences was evaluated in 44 patients who were in a double-blind treatment trial for recurrent genital Herpes simplex infections. Twenty-five subjects received oral acyclovir daily for one year, while 19 received the drug only during outbreaks of herpes. The number of patients who experienced recurrences of aphthous stomatitis and the frequency and duration of attacks per patient were not significantly different between groups. Furthermore

IgE and IgD concentrations in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

Serum IgE and IgD concentrations were examined in 80 patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS), 20 patients with other ulcerative oral disorders, and 39 control subjects. both IgE and IgD concentrations were substantially greater in patients with RAS than in either the other patients with oral disorders or the control subjects. Although the increased IgE concentrations might be related to cell-mediated phenomena in the immunopathogenesis of RAS and the increased IgD concentrations might support the recently postulated role of IgD in immune responses related to the oral cavity, the poss

Behcet's disease presenting as chronic aphthous stomatitis in a child.

Behcet's disease is a chronic, recurrent, inflammatory disease of unknown cause that involves mucous surfaces, skin, eyes, joints, and the CNS. Although not reported in the pediatric literature, some cases start in childhood. This report describes a child whose chronic oral and genital ulcers preceded recognition of her gastrointestinal tract, eye, and CNS disease for nine years. The current knowledge of Behcet's disease in children is discussed.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis: clinical characteristics and evidence for an immunopathogenesis.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis is one of the most common diseases affecting the oral mucosa, and one of its variants is the most painful affliction of the oral mucosa. The lesions of recurrent aphthous stomatitis can be manifested as part of a broad spectrum of clinical disease ranging from the common minor aphthous ulcers to Behçet's syndrome. Differential diagnosis, although not often difficult, must include many conditions capable of producing erosive and ulcerative oral mucosal lesions. The salient features of recurrent aphthous stomatitis suggest that it is a heterogeneous entity. Recent i
