[Dynamics of streptococcal infections and prevention of post-streptococcal diseases in children's communities of Timişoara].

An analysis was carried out of the dynamics of circulation of the beta-haemolytic streptococcus in pre-school and in school children in the first two years of primary school. The study was performed simultaneously in two groups of children (an experimental and a control group) and allowed, after confrontation of the results obtained, to evaluate correctly the investigations performed, that is the detection of the acute disease and of healthy carriers by bacteriological examinations and early detection of post-streptococcal complications with the aid of serologic examinations (ASLO). The import

Clinical experience with clindamycin hydrochloride: I. Treatment of streptococcal and mixed streptococcal-staphylococcal skin infections.

Two hundred and forty-four children were evaluated in a study comparing clindamycin hydrochloride, erythromycin, and phenoxymethyl penicillin for the treatment of streptococcal pyoderma. Similar numbers of patients were followed during (day 7) and after (day 14) therapy in each of the three treatment groups. All patients had skin lesions positive for group A streptococci with or without staphylococci; the percentage rate of pure and mixed cultures was similar for the three groups of patients. Both clindamycin and erythromycin proved somewhat superior to penicillin on the basis of effecting ear

Streptococcal infection and autoimmune diseases.

Excessive activation of immune cells by environmental factors, such as infection or individual genetic risk, causes various autoimmune diseases. Streptococcus species are gram-positive bacteria that colonize the nasopharynx, respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, genitourinary tract, and skin. Group A Streptococcus (GAS) species cause various symptoms, ranging from mild infections, such as tonsillitis and pharyngitis, to serious infections, such as necrotizing fasciitis and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome. The contribution of GAS infections to several autoimmune diseases, including acut

Streptococcal A infection: reemerging and virulent.

Streptococcal A infections are reemerging as a dangerous clinical problem. This particular infection is usually a problem for the postpartum mother and not usually associated with fetal or neonatal infections. Maternal morbidity and mortality are overwhelming when compared with other maternal infections. Historically, group A streptococcus was the cause of epidemic postpartum sepsis prior to the advent of proper hand-washing techniques. Currently, transmission can occur directly from a colonized healthcare provider, other patients, or a community-acquired source. The Joint Commission and the I

[Epidemiology and pathogenesis of streptococcal infection].

The appearance of the "streptococcal toxic shock-like syndrome" led to a growing interest in infections caused by Streptococcus pyogenes (group-A-streptococci). Since 1987 some 800 cases with a lethality of 20% or more were observed. Contrary to toxic scarlet fever the site of primary infection are the lower respiratory tract or soft tissue infections. Erythrogenic toxins and low molecular weight mitogens, inducing cytokines (IL-2, IL-3, IL-6, TNF-alpha, IFN-gamma) seem to be involved in the pathogenesis of these severe infections. Morphologically and culturally the strains isolated from cases

Behçet's disease and streptococcal infection.

The streptococcal antigen was determined in the plasma of 26 patients with Behçet's disease, 30 patients with other uveitis (tuberculosis: 7, sarcoidosis: 6, Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada's disease: 6, toxoplasmosis: 6, trauma: 5), and 63 normal subjects with matched ages. The antigen titer in Behçet's patients, either during ocular attack or remission, was significantly higher than that in the normal control subjects (P less than 0.0001) and that of other uveitis subjects (P less than 0.001). Time-course study in the Behçet's disease cases showed that the titer was the highest during the attack and th

Overwhelming postoperative streptococcal infection.

Fulminant postoperative group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal infections present a serious and potentially lethal threat to children. Three children with severe postoperative streptococcal wound infections are presented. Each child developed high fever within the first 24 hr after surgery, followed shortly by signs of septic shock. In all patients, the clinical appreciation of wound infection became apparent late in the course of the illness. All three children had white blood cell counts below 6000/cu mm. One child developed crepitus in the incision; another showed radiographic evidence of fre

Epidemiological and clinical aspects of invasive group A streptococcal infections and the streptococcal toxic shock syndrome.

In a retrospective study of invasive infections due to group A Streptococcus (GAS) in Stockholm during 1987 to 1995, the average incidence per 100,000 residents per year was 2.3, varying between 3.7 per 100,000 (in 1988) and 1.3 per 100,000 (in 1993). Incidence was 1.8 in the age group of 0-4 years but otherwise increased by age, from 0.48 in the age group of 5-14 years to 6.1 among those over 65 years of age. A review of 151 invasive episodes occurring in 1983-1995 showed cyclic increases of infections due to T1M1-serotype strains during 1986-1990 and 1993-1995. The T1M1 serotype accounted fo

Group A streptococcal infections in Alberta, Canada 2018-2023.

Group A streptococcal or Streptococcus pyogenes infections have been increasing post-COVID-19 pandemic. We describe the epidemiology of S. pyogenes pharyngitis and invasive disease in Alberta, Canada 2018-2023. Positive pharyngitis specimens were identified from throat swabs collected from pharyngitis patients. Invasive S. pyogenes was defined as the isolation of S. pyogenes from a normally sterile site or severe skin infection. S. pyogenes isolates were emm typed. Pharyngitis and invasive disease displayed seasonal trends preceding the COVID-19 pandemic followed by a sharp decrease during COV

Tailored liposomal nanotraps for the treatment of Streptococcal infections.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcal infections are associated with life-threatening pneumonia and sepsis. The rise in antibiotic resistance calls for novel approaches to treat bacterial diseases. Anti-virulence strategies promote a natural way of pathogen clearance by eliminating the advantage provided to bacteria by their virulence factors. In contrast to antibiotics, anti-virulence agents are less likely to exert selective evolutionary pressure, which is a prerequisite for the development of drug resistance. As part of their virulence mechanism, many bacterial pathogens secrete cytolytic exotoxins (he

Biofilm in group A streptococcal necrotizing soft tissue infections.

Necrotizing fasciitis caused by group A streptococcus (GAS) is a life-threatening, rapidly progressing infection. At present, biofilm is not recognized as a potential problem in GAS necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTI), as it is typically linked to chronic infections or associated with foreign devices. Here, we present a case of a previously healthy male presenting with NSTI caused by GAS. The infection persisted over 24 days, and the surgeon documented the presence of a "thick layer biofilm" in the fascia. Subsequent analysis of NSTI patient tissue biopsies prospectively included in a mu

Neonatal & maternal group B streptococcal infections: a comprehensive review.

Group B Streptococcus is an important cause of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality in many parts of the world. The last two decades have seen intensified efforts in the Western hemisphere in the prevention of this devastating infection by identifying and treating pregnant women who carry group B streptococci or who are at highest risk of transmitting the organism to newborns. The intrapartum use of antibiotics in these women has led unequivocally to a decrease in the rate of neonatal group B streptococcal disease. Although studies in India show a predominance of Gram negative bacteri

Epidemiological markers of group A streptococcal infections in France.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: A limited number of biotypes, T-types, and emm-types have been found to be associated with invasive isolates of group A streptococci, confirming the involvement of the M protein in virulence and its importance as an epidemiological marker. In this study, the epidemiological markers in the clinical isolates of group A streptococci were compared in invasive and non invasive isolates. METHODS: From 1998 to 2001, 141 invasive and 353 non invasive isolates in France were studied and their biotype, T-type, and emm-type were determined. RESULTS: The invasive isolates were m

Invasive group A Streptococcal infections at Chulalongkorn University Hospital.

To determine whether the incidence and pattern of group A Streptococcal (GAS) infections in Thailand have paralleled those in the United States and Europe, we conducted a retrospective study of invasive GAS infections at Chulalongkorn University Hospital from 1995 to 1999. A total of 42 cases were identified. There were 18 males and 24 females (median age of 59 and 46 years, respectively). Most patients were in two age groups: 20-39 (33%) and 60-79 (38%). Underlying conditions were present in 34 patients (81%), including mostly chronic system diseases (50%), alcohol abuse (19%), diabetes melli

[Serious streptococcal infections of the head and neck region].

This article describes the four cases of serious infections caused by Streptococcus pyogenes in the head and neck. Three patients presented with invasive infections of the soft tissues in the neck and one with epiglottitis. Two patients fulfilled the criteria for toxic streptococcal shock syndrome. The incidence of severe streptococcal disease is increasing in Norway, which emphasizes the importance of an aggressive attitude when diagnosing and treating atypical throat infections.
