OBJECTIVE: Within the common pathogenic flora responsible for neonatal sepsis, streptococci group B (SGB) is the most frequently found etiol … 0 (19 cases), with an incidence of neonatal sepsis of 4.08/1,000. The incidence of sepsis caused by Streptococcus agalactiae in our environment is low, although it has increased from 15.9% to 28% comparing the first five years with the following six years, with a fatality rate of 10.5%. We believe that the most effective strategy for this problem is intrapartum identifica …

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus agalactiae (group B streptococcus) is a rare etiology of osteoarticular infection in adults. In a literature review (Medline-Embase plus) up until may 1994, we have found only 51 cases. In most patients, diabetes mellitus, liver disease or long-term steroid therapy were documented.
METHODS: Four adult patients with osteoarticular infection due to S. agalactiae from two Galician hospitals were studied from January 1988 to October 1994: prepatellar bursitis (one case), septic monoarthritis (2 cases) and psoas abscess associated to cervical spondylodiscitis and oligoart…

This is the first report of high-level gentamicin resistance in a group B streptococcus. Strain B128 of serotype II was isolated from an infected leg wound in 1987. B128 was resistant to high levels of gentamicin as well as of all other available aminoglycosides and was also resistant to tetracyclines. No bactericidal synergism was found between ampicillin or vancomycin and any of these aminoglycosides. Gentamicin, kanamycin, streptomycin, and tetracycline resistance determinants transferred by conjugation into a plasmid-free group B streptococcus recipient at a frequency of 10(-8) to 10(-9) t

Streptococcus agalactiae or Group B Streptococcus (GBS) infections are commonly associated with infections in neonates and pregnant women. However, there has been a rising incidence in nonpregnant adults. The risk of GBS infection in nonpregnant adults is increased for patients of advanced age and those with underlying medical conditions such as diabetes mellitus and cancer. We present a 77-year-old female with type-2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and bilateral foot ulcers that presented in probable septic shock with necrotic foot ulcers and necrotizing fasciitis and underwent bilateral low…

Group B Streptococcus (GBS; Streptococcus agalactiae) is an important cause of sepsis and meningitis. Nine GBS serotypes, based on capsular polysaccharide (CPS) antigens, have been described. Their distribution varies worldwide and needs to be monitored to understand the epidemiology of GBS disease and inform the development of vaccines. In this study, we sequenced cpsH of GBS serotype II (cpsHII) and compared it with that of the other eight serotypes to identify serotype-specific regions. We then developed a DNA microarray based on the cpsH gene and used it to test 88 GBS isolates-9 serotype …

Group B Streptococcus (GBS), a causative agent of newborn infection, colonizes the digestive system and genitourinary tracts of pregnant women. The aim of this study was to assess the incidence of GBS capsular serotypes, virulence genes, and antibiotic resistance in pregnant women at a prominent maternity hospital in Shahrekord, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari. From January to July 2022, a total of 370 vaginal swabs were collected from women who were from 28 to 38 weeks pregnant. These swabs were used to identify Streptococcus agalactiae using PCR and culture technique. The capsular serotype of Stre…

Streptococcus agalactiae [group B Streptococcus (GBS)] is a leading cause of neonatal meningitis, with late-onset disease (LOD) occurring after gastrointestinal tract colonization in infants. Bacterial membrane lipids are essential for host-pathogen interactions, and the functions of glycolipids are yet to be fully elucidated. GBS synthesizes three major glycolipids: glucosyl-diacylglycerol (Glc-DAG), diglucosyl-DAG (Glc2-DAG), and lysyl-Glc-DAG (Lys-Glc-DAG). Here, we identify the enzyme, IagB, as responsible for biosynthesis of Glc-DAG, the precursor for the two other glycolipids in GBS. To …

Streptococcus agalactiae secrete virulence factors believed to be able of killing host tissues, especially under elevated water temperature. A direct effect of S. agalactiae secretory products on tilapia cells was tested on the tilapia kidney (TK-1) cell culture. The bacteria were cultured under four different temperature levels: 22, 29, 32 and 37°C; the cell-free portion was processed through SDS-PAGE; and distinct bands were identified by LC-MS/MS. At least, three virulence factors were identified, Bsp, PcsB and CAMP factor, with increasing levels as the cultured temperature rose. Expression…

The in vitro antibacterial activity of solithromycin (CEM-101) against macrolide-resistant isolates (n=62) of Streptococcus agalactiae (group B streptococcus [GBS]) was determined. Phenotypic characterization of macrolide-resistant strains was performed by double-disc diffusion testing. A multiplex PCR was used to identify the erm(B), erm(TR), and mef(A/E) genes, capsular genotypes, and alpha-like (Alp) protein genes from the GBS strains. Determination of MIC was carried out using the microdilution broth method. The Etest method was used for penicillin, azithromycin, clarithromycin, and erythr…

To examine the global diversity of Streptococcus agalactiae (group B streptococci [GBS]) and to elucidate the evolutionary processes that determine its population genetics structure and the reported changes in host tropism and infection epidemiology, we examined a collection of 238 bovine and human isolates from nine countries on five continents. Phylogenetic analysis based on the sequences of 15 housekeeping genes combined with patterns of virulence-associated traits identified a genetically heterogeneous core population from which virulent lineages occasionally emerge as a result of recombin…

Infection due to Streptococcus agalactiae or Group B streptococcus may be acquired during parturition or gestation. Discordant twin gestational Group B streptococcus infections are rarely reported. We describe two cases of fatal discordant gestational Group B streptococcus infection in both a monochorionic/diamniotic pregnancy and in a dichorionic/diamniotic pregnancy. In both instances, cultures, examination of the placentae, and autopsy findings demonstrated infection by Group B streptococcus in only the presenting fetus. Despite the ubiquity of this organism, this is the first documented ca…

Streptococcus agalactiae, also known as Group B Streptococcus (GBS), is a major pathogen responsible for mastitis in dairy cows. It causes persistent and difficult-to-treat mammary infections, leading to reduced milk production. Baicalein, a flavonoid compound, exhibits anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial activities; however, its specific mechanism of action against GBS remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the mechanism by which baicalein inhibits GBS invasion of bovine mammary epithelial cells (bMECs). The results showed that baicalein at concentrations of 4 μg/mL or …

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus agalactiae (GBS) is the causative pathogen of puerperal sepsis in pregnant women and pneumonia, sepsis and meningitis in infants. Infection of GBS is responsible for the increased morbidity in pregnant women and the elderly, and bring challenges to clinical diagnosis and treatment. However, culture-based approaches to detect S.agalactiae is time-consuming with limited sensitivity. Besides, real-time quantitative PCR demands expensive instruments with tedious steps. Thus, we aim to establish a new detection method for more accurate and rapid detection of S.agalactiae.

A 39-year-old previously healthy man was referred to our hospital because of acute onset of fever and consciousness disturbance. Neurological examinations revealed deteriorated consciousness, nuchal rigidity and Kernig's sign. A lumbar puncture yielded clouded fluid with a WBC 1,012/μl (polynuclear cell 96%), 147.3 mg/dl of protein, 44 mg/dl of glucose and Gram positive cocci. At first, he was treated with ceftriaxon and ampicillin. At Day 2, meropenem was added. Streptococcus agalactiae was isolated from blood and cerebrospinal fluid. He responded promptly to antimicrobial therapy, and within…

A case of severe endocarditis, with complications of multiple infarction, meningitis, and ruptured mitral chordae tendineae, caused by Streptococcus agalactiae in a healthy man, is reported. Emergency cardiovascular surgery was performed on the day of admission. Infective endocarditis caused by S. agalactiae is very rare, particularly in a healthy adult. In addition, microbiological analysis revealed that S. agalactiae of sequence type (ST) 19, which belongs to serotype III, was present in the patient's vegetation, mitral valve, and blood culture. It was therefore concluded that the endocardit…

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus, GBS), a leading cause of sepsis and meningitis in infants, can be transmitted vertically from mother to infant during passage through the birth canal. Detection of GBS colonization in perinatal women is a major strategy for the prevention of postpartum neonatal disease. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all women undergo vaginal-rectal screening for GBS colonization at 35-37 weeks of gestation. ChromID Strepto B (STRB) is a chromogenic GBS screening media on which GBS colonies appear pink or red, whi…
