Supplementation with Robuvit® in post-traumatic stress disorders associated to high oxidative stress.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated to recurrent, obsessive recollection of severe traumatic events. This condition is still not completely understood. Elective treatment of PTSD is psychotherapy. Standardized supplements, used for improving chronic fatigue syndrome (i.e. Robuvit®, Horphag Research Ltd) can also be used to control some of the symptoms associated to PTSD, as well as to control the associated increased oxidative stress, present in many of these patients. The aim of this open registry was to evaluate the effects of supplementary Robuvit® 300 mg/day, ad

Anxiety sensitivity in relation to post-traumatic stress disorder symptom clusters among young adults with probable post-traumatic stress disorder.

Despite the promise of past research on anxiety sensitivity (AS) and posttraumatic stress, extant work is limited, given (1) most studies consist of non-Hispanic White and middle-aged samples, (2) few have demonstrated incremental validity to general emotional traits and social determinants of health, and (3) limited work has characterized how AS relates to specific Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptom clusters among those with (probable) PTSD. The current study evaluated the role of AS in relation to PTSD symptom clusters among a racially/ethnically diverse sample of young adults with

Pharmacotherapy for disordered sleep in post-traumatic stress disorder: a systematic review.

Sleep disorders, such as insomnia and nightmares, are common problems in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), exert a strong negative influence on the quality of life and are a great challenge for clinical psychiatry. Several studies have reported on the efficacy of drugs for the treatment of PTSD-related sleep disorders. These studies have not been systematically reviewed. This is the first review on the effectiveness of sleep medication in PTSD. We performed a Medline, EMBASE and Cochrane Library Indexed search, using the keywords: PTSD, pharmacotherapy, therapy, sleep, nightmares, insomni

The relationship of borderline personality disorder to posttraumatic stress disorder and traumatic events.

OBJECTIVE: The authors examined the relationship of borderline personality disorder to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with respect to the role of trauma and its timing. METHOD: The Trauma History Questionnaire and the PTSD module of the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R were administered to 180 male and female outpatients with a diagnosis of one or more DSM-III-R personality disorders. Path analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between borderline personality disorder and PTSD. RESULTS: High rates of early and lifetime trauma were found for the subject group as a whol

Cerebellar Contributions to Traumatic Autobiographical Memory in People with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating mental health condition characterized by recurrent re-experiencing of traumatic events. Despite increasing evidence suggesting that the cerebellum is involved in PTSD pathophysiology, it remains unclear whether this involvement is related to symptoms directly resulting from previous trauma exposure, such as involuntary re-experiencing of the traumatic events, or reflects a broader cerebellar engagement in negative affective states. In this study, we investigated the specific role of the cerebellum in PTSD by employing a script reactivatio

Bupropion in Comorbid Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Methamphetamine Use Disorder.

Background: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorder (SUD) frequently occur together. Serotonergic agents are preferred medications to treat PTSD, while bupropion is reserved due to limited evidence. Ongoing studies suggest bupropion may be effective for treating methamphetamine use disorder (MUD). Investigators aimed to evaluate if bupropion would confer benefit to patients with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth edition diagnoses for PTSD and MUD compared to traditional pharmacotherapy. Methods: This report describes four patients with comorb

Post-traumatic stress disorder: a psychiatric disorder requiring urgent attention.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a severe and heterogenous psychiatric disorder that was first defined as a mental disorder in 1980. Currently, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Edition (DSM-5) and the International Classification of Diseases 11th Edition (ICD-11) offer the most widely accepted diagnostic guidelines for PTSD. In both diagnostic categories, experiencing a traumatic event (TE) is the necessary criterion for diagnosing PTSD. The TEs described in the DSM-5 include actual or threatened death, serious injury, sexual violence, and other extreme s

Applicability of the Hebrew Bible to Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and Post-traumatic Growth.

Since the new millennium, biblical scholars have begun to reread certain writings in the Hebrew Bible through the concepts of post-traumatic stress disorder and post-traumatic growth. Some scholars believe such a reading is legitimate, whereas others think it problematic, and still, others hold a midway perspective. This article argues for the midway, the position that accepts the applicability of the Hebrew Bible to today's psychological concepts but calls for caution. Because ancient Israelites reacted to traumatic events and distinguished the human mind from the body like modern people, it

Neural oscillations while remembering traumatic memories in post-traumatic stress disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The current study investigated the oscillatory brain activity of PTSD patients during directed and imaginal exposure to the traumatic memory using magnetoencephalography (MEG), in a paradigm resembling exposure therapy. METHODS: Brain activity of healthy trauma-exposed controls and PTSD participants was measured with MEG as they listened to individualized trauma narratives as well as to a neutral narrative and as they imagined the narrative in detail. Source localization analysis by frequency bands was conducted in order to map neural generators of oscillatory activity. RESULTS: E

The Association of Traumatic Brain Injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, and criminal recidivism.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the study was to assess the prevalence of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and to determine whether TBI or PTSD is associated with an increase in general or violent criminal recidivism among a representative sample of released prisoners. In-person interviews were conducted with a stratified random sample of individuals incarcerated with the South Carolina Department of Corrections approximately 90 days prior to the prisoners' releases. In addition to a variety of items and scales, respondents were screened for TBI and were asked

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Post-Traumatic Growth following Kidney Transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Kidney transplantation (KT) is a life-saving therapy for kidney failure. However, KT recipients can suffer from debilitating depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and suicide. In contrast to PTSD, post-traumatic growth (PTG) is a positive psychologic change in response to a challenging situation. PTG has been studied in other chronic diseases, but less is known about its role in the setting of KT. We sought to elucidate the prevalence, predictors, and the effect of PTSD and PTG on post-KT outcomes. We also considered the roles of benefit finding and resilience. METHOD

An Ambulatory Polysomnography Study of the Post-traumatic Nightmares of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: This study used ambulatory polysomnography (PSG) to investigate post-traumatic nightmares of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The key research question was whether post-traumatic nightmares occur in both rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM sleep, and if so, whether nightmares in each sleep stage differed in content, phenomenology, and heart rate response. Underlying sleep disorders were investigated in an exploratory way. METHODS: Thirty-five treatment-seeking veterans, current serving military members, and emergency service personnel undertook full PSG using the Comp

Mental Health in Offspring of Traumatized Refugees with and without Post-traumatic Stress Disorder.

Intergenerational transmission of psychological trauma and the impact of parental post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on offspring are controversially discussed. We studied 50 offspring (36 women and 14 men, mean age 42.1 years) of refugees who were severely traumatized as children at the end of World War II. From these, 25 of the refugees currently suffered from chronic PTSD, and 25 had no PTSD. Parental PTSD status did not significantly influence mental health [as per the Symptom Checklist (SCL)-90-R] or quality of life (assessed by the 36-item Short-form Health Survey) in their children.

Mild traumatic brain injury does not produce post-traumatic stress disorder.

It has been widely assumed that patients who sustain mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) or post-concussive syndrome develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in response to their cognitive difficulties, diminished coping skills, or other losses. This study examined 70 patients who had previously been diagnosed as having either PTSD or MTBI. Each patient was asked to provide a highly detailed chronological history of the events which preceded, followed, and occurred during the traumatic event, to indicate whether they were rendered unconscious or had amnesia for the event, and to describe t

[Stellatum ganglion block and post-traumatic stress disorder].

PTSD treatment in Denmark is difficult, with many treatment-resistant patients and a high dropout rate from conventional treatments. This review describes a newer supplementary therapy, stellatum ganglion block (SGB), which may prove to have a good effect by; 1) reducing patients' hyperarousal symptoms such as flashbacks, palpitations and anxiety, and 2) improving patients' ability to process intrusive memories due to increased hippocampal activity, and 3) leading to better compliance with behavioral therapy such as trauma-focused psychotherapy or EMDR.

Mentalization in Asylum Seekers with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

This study explores the relationship between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the two major dimensions of mentalization (self and other-oriented) in asylum seekers resettled in Italy. It is important because it is the first study addressing the role of mentalization in asylum seekers with PTSD. Twenty asylum seekers scoring above the cut-off for the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5) were contrasted to twenty asylum seekers without PTSD on mentalization and somatization. The Certainty About Mental States Questionnaire (CAMSQ) and the Bradford Somatic Inventory (BSI-21) were used to asse

Mechanisms of Epigenetic Inheritance in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disorder that causes debilitating functional impairment in patients. Observations from survivors of traumatic historical events solidify that this disease is not only associated with personal experiences but can also be inherited from familial traumas. Over the past decades, researchers have focused on epigenetic inheritance to understand how responses to adverse experiences can be passed down to future generations. This review aims to present recent findings on epigenetic markers related to PTSD and research in the intergenerational inher

Neuroimaging in post-traumatic stress disorder: a narrative review.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric pathology arising from severe trauma exceeding an individual's adaptive capabilities. Clinical presentations include flashbacks, nightmares, emotional detachment, avoidance of trauma-related stimuli, and heightened vegetative arousal. High-risk groups encompass veterans, survivors of sexual assault, and those impacted by warfare, terrorism or calamities. Therapeutic approaches involve pharmacological and psychological interventions, particularly cognitive-behavioral modalities and prolonged exposure therapy. Eye movement desensitization an
