Strongyloidiasis is a parasitic disease of tropical regions and to some extent of the South of Europe. In immunocompromised patients, particularly under steroid medication, infestation by this nematode may sometimes lead to life-threatening hyper-infestation. Diagnosis is often difficult because of a polymorphic clinical picture and usually low larvae excretion in the stool. The case is reported of a Yugoslavian patient who under corticosteroid therapy suffered from severe diarrhea and dehydration due to hyperinfestation by nematode larvae. Several attempts at treatment were necessary to eradi…

Strongyloides stercoralis causes a distinctive form of cutaneous larva migrans that is recognized as larva currens. The rapid rate of intracutaneous migration, the cutaneous localization, the chronicity of recurrence, and the frequency of urticarial reaction justify its presentation as a clinically distinguishable form of creeping eruption. This clinical complex should be identified as a cutaneous sign of systemic disease.

A female entire dog with a history of travel from Eastern Europe, coprophagia, and absent prophylactic treatment against parasites, develope … of hyperfibrinolysis. This is the first description of transient hyperfibrinolysis associated with strongyloidiasis in the dog, although hyperfibrinolysis has been described in association with other helminth infections in the dog and in other host species. Strongyloidiasis should be considered as an uncommon cause of acquired clinical hyperfibrinolysis, particul …

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to assess the epidemiological, laboratory, and clinical features of imported strongyloidiasis in a tropical medicine referral unit in Madrid, Spain.
METHODS: This was a retrospective study based on a review of medical records. A patient was diagnosed with strongyloidiasis when the infection could be detected by conventional stool analysis and/or serology against Strongyloides stercoralis, regardless of the presence of symptoms.
RESULTS: One hundred and seventy-eight cases of strongyloidiasis were included in the study. Stool tests were performed in…

The objective of the present study was to assess intestinal permeability in patients with infection caused by Strongyloides stercoralis. Twenty-six patients (16 women and 10 men), mean age 45.9, with a diagnosis of strongyloidiasis were evaluated. For comparison, 25 healthy volunteers (18 women and 7 men), mean age 44.9, without digestive disorders or intestinal parasites served as normal controls. Intestinal permeability was measured on the basis of urinary radioactivity levels during the 24 h following oral administration of chromium-labeled ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid ((51)Cr-EDTA) expr…

Strongyloides stercoralis (SS) is endemic in tropical and subtropical areas worldwide and in the southeastern United States. The lifecycle of SS is both unique and complex. Human infection begins with the penetration of skin by filariform larvae that migrate hematogenously to the lungs. Larvae then ascend the airway, are swallowed, and mature in the gut. Unlike other nematodes, SS can autoinfect the same host and persist for decades. Categorization of infection includes acute, chronic-uncomplicated, and disseminated forms. Clinical manifestations depend on the particular organs involved. Fifte
