BACKGROUND: Stuttering is often accompanied by involuntary movements, abnormal gestures or changes in facial expression.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the incidence and phenomenology of abnormal movements (AMs) in stuttering patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty-five consecutive patients with stuttering and 119 normal controls videotaped and subsequently reviewed, in which AMs were classified as voluntary or involuntary, and as concurrent or unrelated to speech. Movement phenomenology was correlated with disease severity.
RESULTS: Of 85 stuttering patients studied, 51.7% had AMs and 22 more than…

Stuttering priapism is a clinical phenomenon that occurs commonly in certain patient populations, including sickle cell anemia and other hematologic dyscrasias. Although the mechanism is still not completely understood, treatment is focused on prevention of recurrence in the outpatient setting, and immediate detumescence and minimizing corporal fibrosis in the acute setting. We present a case of stuttering priapism in a 44 year-old male with hereditary spherocytosis and discuss the pathophysiology and clinical management of this entity.

A patient who presented with priapism after ingestion of alfuzosin is described. He presented with recurrent priapism, which was relieved temporarily after physical exercise. It did not subside with pharmacologic management and was managed surgically using Winter's procedure. It remained quiescent for a short period, only to reappear later. After additional conservative management, he was well enough to be discharged. At 12 months of follow-up, he was well, had no penile fibrosis, was able to have unaided intercourse, and had moderately bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms. This case illust

UNLABELLED: Stuttering has been considered a heritable disorder since the 1930s. There have been different models of transmission that have been proposed most involving a polygenic component with or without a major locus. In spite of these models, the characteristics being transmitted are not known. This study used two different tasks-a tapping task that is thought to probe hemispheric differences and a Stroop task, which appears to create interferences in speech motor programming and/or execution. The 48 participants in this study included individuals who stutter, high risk family members and…

UNLABELLED: Neuroimaging studies have indicated that persistent developmental stuttering (PDS) may be associated both with an abnormality in white matter of left-hemispheric speech areas and a right-hemispheric hyperactivity. The latter may compensate for the deficient structural connectivity in the left hemisphere. To investigate the effects of stuttering therapy on brain activity nine male adults with PDS underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) before and within 12 weeks after fluency shaping therapy. Brain response differences during overt sentence reading before and after th…

This study examined fluency enhancement in people who stutter via the concomitant presentation of silently mouthed visual speech. Ten adults who stutter recited memorized text while watching another speaker silently mouth linguistically equivalent and linguistically different material. Relative to a control condition, in which no concomitant stimulus was provided, stuttering was reduced by 71% in the linguistically equivalent condition versus only 35% in the linguistically different condition. Despite being an 'incomplete' second speech signal, visual speech possesses the capacity to immediate…

We reported a sixty-year-old man who developed acquired stuttering after a brainstem infarction. Infarctions were detected in the midbrain and upper pons. Neurogenic stuttering of this patients indicated that the midbrain and upper pons could be lesion sites responsible for acquired stuttering. We speculated that the reticular network extending from the brainstem to the frontal cortices, and the periaqueductal gray matter could be closely related regions generating neurogenic stuttering.

Stuttering is an uncommon presentation of acute stroke. Reported cases have often been associated with left sided cortical lesions, aphasia, and difficulties with other non-linguistic tests of rhythmic motor control. Three patients with subcortical lesions resulting in stuttering are discussed. In one patient the ability to perform time estimations with a computerised repetitive time estimation task was characterised. One patient had a pontine infarct with clinical evidence of cerebellar dysfunction. A second patient had a left basal ganglionic infarct and a disruption of timing estimation. A …

We investigated the role of respiratory muscle incoordination during stuttering by measuring esophageal, gastric, and transdiaphragmatic pressures to obtain subglottic pressure (Psg) and indices of diaphragmatic, rib cage, and abdominal muscle contraction during speech in normal volunteers and in severe stutterers. We found in contrast to the relatively constant subglottic pressure during normal conversational speech that speech in stutterers was characterized by failure to control Psg because of contraction of the diaphragm, rib cage, and abdominal muscles singly or in various combinations. A…

Parents of children who have begun to stutter need an explanation why this has occurred. For that explanation, clinicians have many research … each. There was general agreement about core material to be conveyed to parents: An explanation of stuttering onset needs to be multifactorial, incorporating a physical mechanism driving causality. We recommend this explanation needs to include current empirical research and theoretical perspectives about stuttering. To do that, clinicians need to keep up t …

PURPOSE: The experiences of women who stutter have been underresearched. Clinicians have little guidance from the research literature on issues specific to women who stutter and are likely to have less clinical contact with this group than with men who stutter because of the higher prevalence of stuttering in men. This study explored the experiences of a small group of women who stutter with a particular focus on what the main current issues are and how gender may have influenced experiences with stuttering.
METHOD: This qualitative study involved recruitment of 9 women who stutter (aged 35-8…

PURPOSE: This study compared a new adult stuttering treatment program (Modifying Phonation Intervals, or MPI) with the standard of care for reducing stuttered speech in adults (prolonged speech).
METHOD: Twenty-seven adults who stutter were assigned to either MPI or prolonged speech treatment, both of which used similar infrastructures. Speech and related variables were assessed in 3 within-clinic and 3 beyond-clinic speaking situations for participants who successfully completed all treatment phases.
RESULTS: At transfer, maintenance, and follow-up, the speech of 14 participants who success…
