Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the unexpected death of an infant under the age of 1 year, where a complete autopsy, including scene investigation, fails to reveal a cause of death. Although the frequency of SIDS has decreased almost 50% over the past 10 years, it remains the leading cause of death in infants aged 1 to 6 months. SIDS is a diagnosis of exclusion and requires the elimination of a wide range of possible causes, including asphyxia, poisoning, abuse, occult heart disease, and other natural disease processes. In this report, we describe the case of an infant death initially s

In a sudden infant death syndrome review Valdès-Dapena describes Naeye's report of increased medial muscle mass in walls of small pulmonary arteries and increased weight of cardiac right ventricles. These findings point to cardiorespiratory insufficiency, a problem in fast growing chicks raised at high altitudes. The vascular epithelium lining all blood vessels synthesises nitric oxide which induces relaxation of smooth muscle in vessel walls, and is possibly an important neurotransmitter. Others demonstrate that nitric oxide is involved in regulating vessel calibre, blood pressure and blood f

A case is described of sudden and unexpected death in a 5-month-old boy who was found to have acute inflammation with multifocal abscess formation at the base of his tongue adjacent to the epiglottis. The case demonstrates the vulnerability of the upper aerodigestive tract in infancy to possible anatomic or functional obstruction from intrinsic lesions and draws attention to the potentially lethal effects of critically-placed posterior lingual inflammation.

Investigations linking sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and type II intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) have thus far failed due in part to technical limitations. Recently developed stereological methods for the unbiased estimation of total nephron number in the human kidney are capable of detecting deviations from normal values of greater than 10%. We compared the total number of nephrons in the kidneys of 24 SIDS victims with those from 16 controls with the same age range. Mean nephron number was significantly (P < 0.001) reduced in ex-IUGR SIDS cases (birthweight under the 10th centil

A definitive explanation of "crib" or "cot" death remains unknown. An unusual incidental autopsy finding of agenesis of the corpus callosum in a case presenting as "near miss" sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is discussed. Hitherto, only a single case associated with SIDS has been reported in the literature. The condition may be easily missed outside the interest in neuropathology.

To examine a possible relationship between pineal function and the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), samples of whole blood, ventricular cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and/or vitreous humor (VH) were obtained at autopsy from 68 infants (45 male, 23 female) whose deaths were attributed to either SIDS (n = 32, 0.5-5.0 months of age; mean +/- S.E.M., 2.6 +/- 0.2 months) or other causes (non-SIDS, n = 36, 0.3-8.0 months of age 4.3 +/- 0.3 months). The melatonin concentrations were measured by radioimmunoassay. A significant correlation was observed for melatonin levels in different body fluids from

The sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the most common cause of death in infancy. The pathophysiological mechanism leading to SIDS is still obscure. In the QT hypothesis, the mechanism must be an arrhythmogenic sympathetic imbalance: the infants die suddenly of cardiac arrhythmia. Recently, it has been suggested that analysis of heart rate variability (HRV), expressed as standard deviation or variance analysis, can provide adequate information on sympathovagal interaction. We studied 150 newborns enrolled in a previous prospective electrocardiographic study to evaluate the predictive value

A case-control investigation of the association of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome with a family history compatible with susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia disclosed close agreement with a previously published uncontrolled study from Australia. A definitive investigation of this association will require development of a less invasive and simpler test than is currently available for identifying individuals at risk.

Budd-Chiari syndrome rarely occurs in infants. We report a case of a 1-month-old female infant who presented as a sudden infant death and was found at autopsy to have thrombi occluding both hepatic veins. Microscopically the liver showed perivenular fibrosis extending into the lobule and central venous congestion consistent with Budd-Chiari syndrome.

To find out whether there is any relationship between the ventilatory response to hypoxia and the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), we studied the effects of mild induced hypoxia (PIO2, 120 mm Hg = 17% oxygen) in 16 infants aged 2 weeks to 6 months. Eight had recurrent apneic spells (apnea group) (five had aborted SIDS and three had recurrent apnea in the intensive care nursery) and eight were "well" preterm infants about to fly in a pressurized airplane (PIO2, 120 mm Hg) (control group). Mean birth weights were 2,245 and 1,400 gm and mean gestational ages were 35 and 30 weeks. Postconceptu

Sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) in infancy which includes Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the commonest diagnosed cause of death in the United States for infants 1 month to 1 year of age. Central nervous system mechanisms likely contribute to many of these deaths. We discuss some of these including seizure disorders, prolonged breath holding, arousal from sleep and its habituation, laryngeal reflex apnea potentiated by upper airway infection, and failure of brainstem-mediated autoresuscitation. In the conclusions section, we speculate how lives saved through back sleeping might re

OBJECTIVE: To capacitate pregnant women to comply with measures designed to prevent sudden infant death syndrome.
METHODS: A quasi-experimental study was conducted before and after the intervention that included pregnant women attending the Course of Preparation for Childbirth and Parenthood of Health Centers Cluster. Six training sessions were given in the context of preventing this syndrome. Three questionnaires were applied, one to evaluate the knowledge of pregnant women before classes, other was submitted after the sessions, and another, one month after the birth of the babies, to identi

Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), the leading cause of postneonatal infant mortality, likely comprises heterogeneous disorders with the common phenotype of sudden death without explanation upon postmortem investigation. Previously, we reported that ∼40% of SIDS deaths are associated with abnormalities in serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) in regions of the brainstem critical in homeostatic regulation. Here we tested the hypothesis that SIDS is associated with an alteration in serum 5-HT levels. Serum 5-HT, adjusted for postconceptional age, was significantly elevated (95%) in SIDS infant

Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the major cause of death in infants between 1 month and 1 year of age. Two particular concerns are that (1) premature or low birth weight (<2500-g) infants have a 2- to 40-fold greater risk of dying of SIDS (depending on the sleep position) than infants born at term and of normal birth weight, and that (2) the proportion of premature infants dying of SIDS has increased from 12 to 34% between 1988 and 2003. Hypo- and hypersensitivity of peripheral arterial chemoreceptors (PACs) may be one biological mechanism that could help to explain the epidemiological

More than 25 years have elapsed since continuous cardiorespiratory monitoring at home was suggested to decrease the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). In the ensuing interval, multiple studies have been unable to establish the alleged efficacy of its use. In this statement, the most recent research information concerning extreme limits for a prolonged course of apnea of prematurity is reviewed. Recommendations regarding the appropriate use of home cardiorespiratory monitoring after hospital discharge emphasize limiting use to specific clinical indications for a predetermined period,

This study examined the effects of birth characteristics, which reported on birth certificates, on sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) based on vital statistics between 1995 and 1998 in Japan. One thousand eight hundred and fifty-nine cases of SIDS and 4,787,537 live births were analyzed. The mortality rate from SIDS was 0.388 SIDS deaths per 1000 live births. Based on multivariate analysis using Poisson regression model, risk factors associated with significantly increased SIDS rates included low birth weight, being a male infant, young maternal age, late birth in multiparity, maternal stillb

Hypoplastic pineal glands and decreased melatonin levels are found in sudden infant death syndrome. Excess oxygen radical production and inadequate radical quenching is suggested to cause oxidative stress in the brain of sudden infant death syndrome victims. Loss of intraventricular cerebrospinal fluid melatonin could play an important role in the disease process. Infants at risk might be protected by exogenous melatonin.
