An aqueous reaction of barium hydroxide and 3-amino-4-hy-droxy-benzene-sulfonic acid yielded a very small amount of an unexpected product, bis-(2-amino-3-oxo-3H-phenoxazine-8-sulfonato)-tetra-aqua-barium, [Ba(C12H7N2O5S)2(H2O)4], (I). The compound crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1 with all atoms on general positions. The barium cation is 8-coordinate with three sulfonate O atoms, one carbonyl O atom, and four water mol-ecules at Ba-O distances of 2.716 (2) to 2.807 (1) Å. The two independent anions have essentially planar phenoxazinone systems with an angle of ca 2.4° between them.

A radical sulfonation-ipso-cyclization cascade promoted by Mn(OAc)3·2H2O using functionalized alkynes or alkenes and potassium metabisulfite (K2S2O5) is reported. A total of 30 spirocyclic sulfonates were synthesized under mild conditions. We also demonstrate a modular synthesis approach in multiple steps for the preparation of various azaspiro[4,5]-trienone-based sulfonamides and sulfonate esters.

Sulfone motifs play important roles in bioactive compounds and functional materials. The development of efficient methodologies for constructing sulfonyl-containing compounds has thus attracted considerable attention. Here, we introduce a protocol for the preparation of alkyl aryl sulfones under mild conditions. This protocol employs β-thioamide sulfone as a novel sulfone motif donor. It forms sulfinates in situ under basic conditions, which then undergo cross-coupling with the intermediates that were generated from ligand-free copper-catalyzed cyclopropenes (CPEs) ring opening.

It was possible to isolate several strains of Micromonospora sp. from waters of Rio Reconquista. They all were filamentous bacteria with lateral spores, highly resistant to Cr(III) and another heavy metal cations. All these strains were able to grow on naphthalene-2-sulphonate as sole carbon source in a mineral medium. The biodegradation of the xenobiotic proceeds via the formation of salicylate and gentisate. These compounds have been isolated and mass spectrometry identified.

A male patient who was being treated with oral prednisone for erosive mucocutaneous pemphigus lesions developed fever, jaundice, a rash, and anemia within 2 wk of starting dapsone therapy. We present a patient with annular subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus who was successfully treated with low doses of sulfones. A very photosensitive cutaneous eruption and scanty systemic symptoms are characteristics. Also there are ANA and anti-Ro positives but the anti-DNA antibodies negatives as immunological markers. The treatment with sulfones will be a valid treatment when safer drugs have failed.
