China's functioning market for sulfur dioxide scrubbing technologies.

Countries' differing positions in technology transfer have been a barrier in climate negotiations. Developed countries want market-based solutions with effective protection of intellectual property rights, whereas developing countries look for external support and nonmarket solutions. Although China has shared common negotiation positions with other developing countries, it has actually relied heavily on markets to acquire foreign technologies. This paper systematically examines the case of sulfur dioxide (SO(2)) scrubbing technologies, with first-hand information from the author's field inter…

Endogenous generation of sulfur dioxide in rat tissues.

While sulfur dioxide (SO(2)) has been previously known for its toxicological effects, it is now known to be produced endogenously in mammals from sulfur-containing amino acid L-cysteine. L-cysteine is catalyzed by cysteine dioxygenase (CDO) to L-cysteinesulfinate, which converts to β-sulfinylpyruvate through transamination by aspartate aminotransferase (AAT), and finally spontaneously decomposes to pyruvate and SO(2). The present study explored endogenous SO(2) production, and AAT and CDO distribution in different rat tissue. SO(2) content was highest in stomach, followed by tissues in the rig…

Sulfite oxidase protects plants against sulfur dioxide toxicity.

The gaseous pollutant SO(2) readily reacts with water to form sulfite that impacts deleteriously on animal and plant health. By modulating the level of sulfite oxidase (SO) that catalyzes the transformation of sulfites to the non-toxic sulfate, we show that Arabidopsis and tomato plants can be rendered resistant or susceptible to SO(2)/sulfite. Plants in which sulfite oxidase expression was abrogated by RNA interference (RNAi) accumulated relatively less sulfate after SO(2) application and showed enhanced induction of senescence and wounding-associated transcripts, leaf necrosis and chlorophyl

A sulfur dioxide climate feedback on early Mars.

Ancient Mars had liquid water on its surface and a CO2-rich atmosphere. Despite the implication that massive carbonate deposits should have formed, these have not been detected. On the basis of fundamental chemical and physical principles, we propose that climatic conditions enabling the existence of liquid water were maintained by appreciable atmospheric concentrations of volcanically degassed SO2 and H2S. The geochemistry resulting from equilibration of this atmosphere with the hydrological cycle is shown to inhibit the formation of carbonates. We propose an early martian climate feedback in

Sulfamides and sulfamide polymers directly from sulfur dioxide.

SO2 gas is effectively used for the preparation of N,N'-diarylsulfamides and shape-persistent sulfamide polymers, which utilize a network of intermolecular N-H...O=S hydrogen bonds to self-assemble into soft porous materials.

Modeling sulfur dioxide absorption by fine water spray.

A novel theoretical model was developed to determine the removal efficiency of sulfur dioxide using fine water spray. The droplet pH, diameter, S(IV) concentration, sulfur dioxide concentration, and liquid-to-gas ratio are found to influence the absorption of sulfur dioxide by the fine water spray. The results demonstrate that the absorption of sulfur dioxide by the fine water spray increases as the droplet diameter falls. The concentration gradient between the interface of the gaseous and liquid phases causes the absorption of sulfur dioxide by the droplets to increase as the initial S(IV) co…

Neonatal development altered by maternal sulfur dioxide exposure.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is one of the commonly encountered environmental contaminants. Experiments were carried out to test for neonatal behavioral alterations associated with maternal SO2 exposure. Pregnant CD-I mice were exposed to 0, 32, or 65 PPM SO2 in environmental chambers from gestation day 7 to 18 (plug = day 1). The SO2 air flow was set at 500 ml/min. Food and water were available at all times. The dams were allowed to deliver and neonatal behavioral development of the pups was studied. Maternal SO2 exposure did not affect the mean number of live pups born/litter; however, the exposure …

Sulfur dioxide-induced chronic bronchitis in beagle dogs.

This study was done to produce a model of chronic bronchitis. Twelve beagle dogs were exposed to 500 ppm sulfur dioxide (SO2) for 2 h/d, 5 d/wk for 21 wk and 4 dogs were sham-exposed to filtered ambient air for the same period. Exposure effects were evaluated by periodically examining the dogs using chest radiographs, pulmonary function, tracheal mucous clearance; and the cellular and soluble components of bronchopulmonary lavage fluids. Dogs were serially sacrificed after 13 and 21 wk of exposure and after 6 and 14 wk of recovery. Clinical signs produced in the SO2-exposed dogs included mucoi…

Sulfur dioxide inhibition of translocation in bean plants.

Exposure of the source leaf of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Black Valentine) for 2 hours to 2.9 microliters per liter SO(2) inhibited the net photosynthetic rate an average of 75% and, simultaneously, the translocation rate an average of 45%. Calculations indicated that the experimentally determined translocation rates from SO(2)-stressed leaves were lower than were the rates expected on the basis of the observed reductions in photosynthesis. It is inferred that, under SO(2) stress, the phloem-loading system becomes a major limiting step in controlling the translocation rate.Following remov

Sulfur dioxide induced airway hyperreactivity in allergic sheep.

The effects of a four-hour exposure (via a Plexiglas hood) to sulfur dioxide (SO2) on airway reactivity was studied in both normal and allergic conscious sheep. Allergic sheep were defined as animals in whom inhalation of Ascaris suum extract resulted in an increase in mean pulmonary flow resistance (RL). Airway reactivity (delta RL) was assessed by measuring the increase in RL after 18 breaths of 0.25% carbachol, from an initial value obtained after 18 breaths of buffered saline. RL and delta RL were determined prior to, immediately after and 24 hours following SO2 exposure in three groups of…

Obstructive lung disease from acute sulfur dioxide exposure.

A previously healthy, non-smoking young man is presented who was briefly exposed to a high concentration of sulfur dioxide. An immediate episode of pulmonary edema was followed by a silent interval with subsequent development of a severe, irreversible obstructive syndrome. This history, together with radiographs showing hyperinflation and sequential physiologic studies indicative of obstruction without bronchospasm and without loss of parenchyma suggest bronchiolitis obliterans as the causative lesion. The literature concerning this syndrome and its relationship to toxic inhalation is briefly …
