The lateral part of intermediate layer of superior colliculus (SCl) is a critical substrate for successful predation by rats. Hunting-evoked expression of the activity marker Fos is concentrated in SCl while prey capture in rats with NMDA lesions in SCl is impaired. Particularly affected are rapid orienting and stereotyped sequences of actions associated with predation of fast moving prey. Such deficits are consistent with the view that the deep layers of SC are important for sensory guidance of movement. Although much of the relevant evidence involves visual control of movement, less is known

To observe the sequential radiation-induced apoptosis in a living embryo, we injected Acridine Orange (AO) solution into the yolk of embryo and visualized radiation-induced apoptosis in developing optic tectum (OT). Medaka embryos at stage 28, when neural cells proliferate rapidly in the OT, were irradiated with 5 Gy X-rays which is a non-lethal dose for irradiated embryos at hatching. The irradiated embryos hatched normally without morphological abnormalities in their brains, even though a large number of apoptotic cells were induced transiently in OT. By yolk injection, apoptotic cells in OT

Visual system anomalies in albino mammals are generally caused by a lack of retinal pigment and misrouting of retinofugal optic fibres. This study shows that the visual system of white zebra finches differs morphologically from that of normally coloured (wild type) birds, although eye pigmentation and retinofugal projection are normal. In white zebra finches, the recrossing tectorotundal projection is enhanced and a new (reciprocal) connection is established between the n. rotundi of both hemispheres. The morphological alterations found in this study may contribute to the previously described

The thalamogeniculate (TG) arteries of 30 forebrain hemispheres were examined. These vessels varied from 2 to 12 in number (mean, 5.7), and from 70 to 580 microns in caliber (mean, 345.8 microns). The average caliber of all the TG vessels per posterior cerebral artery ranged from 700 to 3400 microns (mean, 1972 microns). The TG arteries most often originated as individual vessels; however, in 26.67% of the hemispheres examined they shared a common site of origin, and 33.33% of the hemispheres they arose from common stems. The common stems ranged from 320 to 800 microns in diameter (mean, 583 m

The projection of the retina onto the optic tectum of the pigeon has been investigated using silver impregnation methods for degenerating axons and terminals, autoradiographic tracing, and the Golgi methods. Degenerating optic afferents distribute to sublaminae a-d and f of the stratum griseum et fibrosum superficiale over the whole tectum, but two major fields are observed. One occupies the caudal and ventral tectum (in which region laminar cytoarchitecture is marked), and the other rostral and dorsal tectum (where demarcation of cell laminae is relatively poor). Degeneration in the latter fi

Motion-sound synesthesia is characterized by illusory auditory sensations linked to the pattern and rhythms of motion (dubbed "Mickey Mousing" as in cinema) of visually experienced but soundless object, like an optical flow array, a ball bouncing or a horse galloping. In an MRI study with a group of three synesthetes and a group of eighteen control participants, we found structural changes in the brains of synesthetes in the subcortical multisensory areas of the superior and inferior colliculi. In addition, functional magnetic resonance imaging data showed activity in motion-sensitive regions,

PURPOSE: The cerebral aqueduct (CA) is the narrowest part of the ventricular system, connecting the third and fourth ventricles. This structure is encircled by important neuroanatomical features, and with the increasing application of neuroendoscopic techniques, a comprehensive understanding of the anatomy of the CA is essential. This study aims to provide a comprehensive, multi-perspective anatomical analysis of the cerebral aqueduct and its surrounding structures, integrating microsurgical dissections with endoscopic anatomical correlations to support safer surgical planning.

Retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) have been shown to die by apoptosis after damage to their axons caused by optic nerve crush and the death can be reduced by some neurotrophic factors. Since (-)-deprenyl can reduce apoptotic death in some neuronal systems, we determined whether it can increase RGC survival after optic nerve crush. Fluoro-Gold (FG), a fluorescent retrograde tracer, was injected into both superior colliculi to pre-label RGC cells bodies in the retinal ganglion cell layers (RGCLs) of adult Sprague-Dawley rats. Fours days later, the left optic nerve was crushed immediately behind the …

The occurrence of retrogradely labeled cells in the pontine nuclei was mapped following injections of 0.3-0.4 microliter of a horseradish peroxidase suspension (50% weight/volume) into the uvula (lob. IX of Larsell) in the cat. The uvula was found to receive afferents from three pontine cell collections. One of these is situated in the paramedian pontine nucleus close to the midline. It forms a fairly distinctly outlined longitudinal column of cells and is present at all levels of the pons except most rostrally and caudally. Another group, in the dorsolateral and lateral pontine nuclei, extend

The mammalian superior colliculus and its non-mammalian homolog, the optic tectum (OT), are midbrain structures that integrate multimodal sensory inputs and guide non-voluntary movements in response to prevalent stimuli. Recent studies have implicated this structure as a possible site affected in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Interestingly, fetal exposure to valproic acid (VPA) has also been associated with an increased risk of ASD in humans and animal models. Therefore, we took the approach of determining the effects of VPA treatment on zebrafish OT development as a first step in identifyin

It has been suggested that stochasticity acts in the formation of topographically ordered maps in the visual system through the opposing chemoaffinity and neural activity forces acting on the innervating nerve fibers being held in an unstable equilibrium. Evidence comes from the Islet2-EphA3 knock-in mouse, in which ∼50% of the retinal ganglion cells, distributed across the retina, acquire the EphA3 receptor, thus having an enhanced density of EphA which specifies retinotopic order along the rostrocaudal (RC) axis of the colliculus. Sampling EphA3 knock-in maps in heterozygotes at different po

Spexin (Spx) is a recently characterized neuropeptide implicated in multiple physiological processes in vertebrates, including reproduction, food intake, and regulation of anxiety and stress. Two orthologs (Spx1 and Spx2) are present in some nonmammalian vertebrates, including teleosts. However, information on the distribution of Spx in the brain and its interactions with other neuroendocrine systems in fish is still scarce. In this work, we cloned and sequenced the sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) Spx1, which included a 27 aa signal peptide and a mature peptide of 14 aa that is C-terminal amid

Sound localization critically relies on brainstem neurons that compare information from the two ears. The conventional role of the lateral superior olive (LSO) is extraction of intensity differences; however, it is increasingly clear that relative timing, especially of transients, is also an important function. Cellular diversity within the LSO that is not well understood may underlie its multiple roles. There are glycinergic inhibitory and glutamatergic excitatory principal neurons in the LSO, however, there is some disagreement regarding their relative distribution and projection pattern. He

The oculomotor capture triggered by a peripheral onset is subject to habituation, a basic form of learning consisting in a response decrement toward a repeatedly presented stimulus. However, it is unclear whether habituation of reflexive saccades takes place at the saccadic programming or execution stage (or both). To address this issue, we exploited the fact that during fixation the programming of a reflexive saccade exerts a robust but short-lasting phasic inhibition in the absolute microsaccadic frequency. Hence, if habituation of reflexive saccades occurs at the programming stage, then thi

Defense and social mechanisms in primates seem to share, at least in infancy, common neural substrata.Among these, recent research has implicated the primate superior colliculus (SC) on tasks involving visual detection and recognition of threatening stimuli, such as snakes and faces with emotional expressions. There is also evidence that both kinds of stimuli share specific characteristics and command special attention in the primate visual system. The present review focuses on the role of the SC in these seemingly overlapping functions. We present social behavioral data from capuchin monkeys i

In goldfish and frog, optic nerve regeneration is successful, with restoration of retinotopic projections in visual brain centres and the return of functional vision within 1-2 months. By contrast, at 1 year after unilateral optic nerve crush in the ornate dragon lizard (Ctenophorus ornatus), the regenerated retinotectal projections lack topographic order, presumably explaining why the lizards are blind via the experimental eye (Beazley et al. [1997] J. Comp. Neurol. 377:105-120). To determine whether other abnormalities are associated with the inability to restore topographic projections in t

Interconnections between the visual thalamus and the pretectum were investigated in one species of reptiles, Caiman crocodilus, by injections of horseradish peroxidase into nucleus rotundus. Nucleus pretectalis was identified as a major target of rotundal efferents as well as a significant input to nucleus rotundus. The presence of a pretectal nucleus with neural connections and topographic location similar to nucleus pretectalis of Caiman has been described in lizards and pigeons. Taken together, these observations suggest that this pretectal nuclear group and its associated fiber path may be

Electrical stimulation of the superior colliculus in rats elicits not only orienting movements, as it does in other mammals, but also behaviours resembling such natural defensive responses as prolonged freezing, cringing, shying, and fast running and jumping. To investigate the location of the cells mediating these behaviours, the superior colliculus was systematically mapped with microinjections of sodium L-glutamate (50 mM, 200 nl), and the resultant behavioural changes as assessed in an open field were analysed for defence-like responses. The main regions that gave defensive behaviour were

Previous work suggests that organelles contacting microtubules in axons are in fast transport. Here, we examine the distribution of organelles contacting microtubules in growing axons and growth cones from chick optic tectum. Five axon segments, each 10 microns long, and 4 entire growth cones were reconstructed from serial electron micrographs of quick-frozen, freeze-substituted chick optic tectum. Organelles contacting microtubules in axons are evenly distributed along all microtubules. Smaller organelles, presumably in anterograde transport, are enclosed in fascicles of microtubules, while l
