Combined cataract and strabismus surgery with adjustable sutures.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To report the results of combined cataract and strabismus surgery using an adjustable suture technique in patients of different ages. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty patients underwent combination surgery between March 1999 and January 2004. All adjustments of the muscle sutures were done 24 hours postoperatively to prevent diplopia, and topical anesthesia was used for all but 1 patient. Bilateral lateral rectus recession was performed for 5 patients; medial rectus resection and lateral rectus recession was performed for 11 patients, and medial rectus recession and late…

Polydioxanone sternal sutures for prevention of sternal dehiscence.

BACKGROUND: Sternal dehiscence and wound instability are troublesome complications following median sternotomy. Classic sternal approximation with stainless steel wires may not be the ideal approach in patients predisposed to these complications. We tested the efficacy of polydioxanone (PDS) suture in sternal closure and in prevention of complications in comparison to steel wires in high-risk individuals. METHODS: Three hundred sixty-six patients undergoing elective cardiac surgery with full median sternotomy and having body surface area (BSA) less than 1.5 m(2) were randomly assigned to rece

A morphometrical study of the human palatine sutures.

The paper presents metrical data on the palatine sutures of a dry skull collection comprising 29 male and 33 female specimens. The length and mutual proportions of the mid-palatal, interpalatine and transverse palatine sutures were considered. These properties led to a conclusion as to the extent to which the palatine process of the maxilla and palatine bones dominate in the formation of the hard palate. We discovered that the palatine process of the maxilla is prevalent and that it constitutes approximately 65% of the hard palate in both sexes. Moreover our findings indicated a significant co…

[Single layer continuous absorbable sutures for gastrointestinal anastomosis].

Authors evaluated the safety of single layer continuous sutured anastomosis technique with two different types of absorbable sutures in 252 anastomoses performed on 178 patients. In the prospective, randomized study 5 oesophagus, 26 stomach, 117 small intestine, 32 colonic, 29 pancreatic and 43 biliary anastomoses were performed. In 136 cases poliglecaprone 25 (Monocryl), in 116 cases glycomer 631 (Biosyn) were used. All procedures were carried out by the same surgeon. Anastomosis related complication was detected in 7 cases (2.8%), some kind of anastomosis insufficiency--including minor leaka…

Peripheral nerve injuries. Nerve sutures and nerve grafting.

In the repair of transected peripheral nerves it is attempted to achieve an optimal coaptation of the fascicular tissue. A certain amount of fibroblast activity is essential for nerve regeneration but the fibroblast activity should not be overwhelming. At present fibroblast activity can be reduced only -by resection of the epineural tissue in nerve segments, in which it represents a high percentage of the cross-section (polyfascicular nerve structure with group arrangement), -by reducing the surgical trauma to a minimum, -by reducing the application of foreign material to a minimum, -by avoidi

Comparative evaluation of two antibacterial-coated resorbable sutures versus noncoated resorbable sutures in periodontal flap surgery: A clinico-microbiological study.

BACKGROUND: Sutures at the surgical site can act as a reservoir for microbes, leading to surgical site infection. This mainly occurs in braided sutures due to wicking action. The use of triclosan-coated suture (TCS) or chlorhexidine-coated suture (CCS) could be one of the possible alternatives to reduce the microbial load. OBJECTIVES: The study was designed to assess the antibacterial efficacy of resorbable TCS and CCS along with its effect on healing after periodontal flap surgery in comparison to noncoated sutures (NCSs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty patients with chronic periodontitis in…

Skull Sutures and Craniofacial Disorders: Mind the Gap.

The human skull, whose 22 separate bones make up the cranial vault, facial bones and jaw, is arguably the most complex skeletal structure in … derlying expansion of the brain, a process that is mediated by two specific growth centers, cranial sutures and cranial base synchondroses. This Perspective will provide an overview of general principles governing craniofacial development, growth, and regeneration with emphasis on the unique functions of neural crest cells, cranial sutures, cranial base s …

Progressive Contouring of the Platysma With Barbed Sutures.

BACKGROUND: As the prevalence of neck lift surgeries increases, the field is continually enriched by evolving techniques for enhancing neck aesthetics. While many recent publications focus on deep neck procedures, it is essential not to overlook the significance of platysmal contouring as an integral aspect of neck rejuvenation surgery. Accordingly, we would like to elucidate our unique approach to contouring the platysma. OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to assess the efficacy of the progressive contouring concept, a technique in which the neck is reshaped with barbed sutures synergistica…

In vitro cytocompatibility of triclosan coated Polyglactin910 sutures.

Bioabsorbable sutures can improve the medical functions of existing non-absorbable sutures, and may produce new medical effects, and are expected to become a new generation of medical degradable materials. In this study, the cytocompatibility of triclosan coated polyglactin910 sutures (CTS-PLGA910) was analyzed and different concentrations of sutures were prepared. The effects of sutures on the cytotoxicity and cell proliferation of HUVEC were studied by CCK-8 assay. The hemolysis, total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) activity and nitric oxide (NO) content were investigated to improve the blood …

Mechanics of elliptical interlocking sutures in biological interfaces.

Biological materials, such as beetle elytra and bird beaks, exhibit complex interfaces with diverse morphologies that have evolved to enhance their mechanical properties. However, the relationships between their geometric forms and mechanical properties remain inadequately understood. Here, we develop a theoretical model, supported by finite element simulations and experiments, to explore the strengthening and toughening mechanisms of biological interfaces characterized by elliptical interlocking sutures. We examine how aspect ratio, interlocking angle, and friction influence the stiffness, st…

Trigger Finger Release: Are Sutures Requiring Removal Necessary?

PURPOSE: There is no consensus regarding optimal closure for trigger finger release (TFR) surgery. The purpose of this study was to compare the number of postoperative visits and complications following TFR closure with nonabsorbable sutures versus those following TFR closure with absorbable sutures and skin glue. The hypothesis was that wound closure with absorbable sutures and glue will result in fewer postoperative visits, while having similar complication rates as that with nonabsorbable sutures. METHODS: A retrospective review identified all patients undergoing open TFR over a 3-year per…
