[An outbreak of cryptosporidiosis associated with swimming pools].

A waterborne outbreak of cryptosporidiosis occurred among visitors at a hotel with a swimming pool, gymnasium, and other sports facilities, in northern Nagano Prefecture. The outbreak began in late August, peaked on August 27 and 28, and tapered off at the beginning of September 2004. On August 30, 288 clinical cases with digestive symptoms, including watery diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and tenesmus, were reported to local authorities. Among case-patients who submitted stool samples, 74 were positive for Cryptosporidium. Descriptive epidemiology, environmental investigations, and labor…

An outbreak of cryptosporidiosis associated with a swimming pool.

In August 1988 an increase was noted in the number of cases of cryptosporidiosis identified by the microbiology laboratory at Doncaster Royal Infirmary. By 31 October, 67 cases had been reported. Preliminary investigations implicated the use of one of two swimming pools at a local sports centre and oocysts were identified in the pool water. Inspection of the pool revealed significant plumbing defects which had allowed ingress of sewage from the main sewer into the circulating pool water. Epidemiological investigation confirmed an association between head immersion and illness. The pools were c…

Swimming with a mastoid cavity: what are the risks?

The authors have found no studies and little guidance in the literature on the advisability of people swimming with a modified radical mastoid cavity. Two groups of such outpatients were therefore followed up at 2-monthly intervals for 6 months. One group of 56 patients swam (81% without ear protection) and the other group of 55 patients maintained their ears quite dry. Swimming did not increase the incidence of an infected mastoid cavity. The most important risk of swimming was vertigo which occurred in 5% of swimmers.

X-Irradiation at 0.5 Gy after the forced swim test reduces forced swimming-induced immobility in mice.

The forced swim test (FST) is a screening model for antidepressant activity; it causes immobility and induces oxidative stress. We previously reported that radon inhalation has antidepressant-like effects in mice potentially through the activation of antioxidative functions upon radon inhalation. This study aimed to investigate the effect of prior and post low-dose X-irradiation (0.1, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 Gy) on FST-induced immobility and oxidative stress in the mouse brain, and the differences, if any, between the two. Mice received X-irradiation before or after the FST repeatedly for 5 days. In

Swimming velocity modulates enhanced diffusion in bacterial suspensions.

The activity of swimming bacteria fundamentally alters the transport properties of passive particles through active agitation. While particle diffusion enhancement is known to scale linearly with the active bacterial flux (the product of swimmer density and velocity), the factors controlling the proportionality coefficient β, which represents the efficiency of energy transfer per swimmer, remain unclear. Here, we systematically investigate how bacterial swimming behavior modulates diffusion enhancement using Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa suspensions. We compare wild-type and smoo…

Dental Health Benefits of Swimming in Chlorinated Water.

Poor oral health is an important concern for athletes, as it can affect both general health and athletic performance. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of activity in chlorinated water on oral health in elite swimmers compared to non-swimming athletes. This cross-sectional study included 101 swimmers and 100 other athletes aged 13-26 years with a minimum training intensity of five hours per week (for at least the preceding two years). Oral health was assessed using the approximal plaque index (API) and the decayed/missing/filled teeth (DMFT) index. A DIAGNOcam was used to det…

Swimming for low back pain: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Guidelines recommend exercise for treatment of chronic low back pain and prevention, but the amount and quality of evidence for different exercise modes is highly variable. Swimming is commonly recommended by health professionals, but the extent and quality of research supporting its relationship with back pain is not clear. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this scoping review was to map the extent, characteristics and findings of research investigating the relationship between swimming and low back pain. DESIGN: Scoping review. METHOD: Four electronic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, …

Swimming short fibrous nasal drops achieving intraventricular administration.

Adequate drug delivery across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a critical factor in treating central nervous system (CNS) disorders. Inspired by swimming fish and the microstructure of the nasal cavity, this study is the first to develop swimming short fibrous nasal drops that can directly target the nasal mucosa and swim in the nasal cavity, which can effectively deliver drugs to the brain. Briefly, swimming short fibrous nasal drops with charged controlled drug release were fabricated by electrospinning, homogenization, the π-π conjugation between indole group of fibers, the benzene ring of …

Swimming performance of Cyprinus carpio (Carp) in China.

Cyprinus carpio (Carp) is a fish of great economic importance in China. However, its population has declined considerably due to the construction of barrages. Thus, fishways need to be constructed at barrages to protect fish resources. It is essential for the fishway design to study the swimming performance of carp. By applying incremental flow velocities in a glass open-type flume, three indicators of swimming performance of the carp in China with the body length (BL) of 13-21 cm, including the induced flow velocity (IFV), the critical swimming speed (Ucrit) and the burst swimming speed (Ubur…

Swimming Program on Mildly Diabetic Rats in Pregnancy.

The present study aims to confirm if the moderate-intensity swimming has successful glycemic control and non-toxic oxidative stress levels and to verify the influence on pancreatic adaptations, embryo implantation, and placental efficiency. Female Wistar rats were randomly distributed to obtain mildly diabetic by streptozotocin induction at birth and the non-diabetic females given vehicle. At adulthood, pregnant rats were put at random into sedentary non-diabetic rats (ND); exercise non-diabetic rats (NDEx); sedentary diabetic rats (D); and exercise diabetic rats (DEx). The rats of the groups …

Association between infant swimming and rhinovirus-induced wheezing.

AIM: Infant swimming has been considered as a risk factor for wheezing, but the role that respiratory viruses play is unclear. We explored the effects of infant swimming on the risk of all wheezing illnesses and wheezing associated with rhinoviruses. METHODS: We followed up a birth cohort of 1827 children until 17 months of age, collecting data on infant swimming, other risk factors and physician-diagnosed bronchiolitis or recurrent wheezing. Viral diagnostics were performed in a subset of children with all respiratory tract infections. RESULTS: Data on infant swimming were obtained for 1038…

[Ventricular fibrillation following hyperventilation and apneic underwater swimming].

This is a case study of an 18 years old boy who lost consciousness during apneic underwater swimming. When cardiopulmonary resuscitation was initiated ventricular fibrillation was seen on cardiac monitoring. Bradycardia, atrial and ventricular premature beats are a known response to hyperventilation and apneic underwater diving. This case is the first documentation of ventricular fibritllation as a cause of sudden cardiac death during apneic underwater swimming.

Swimming pool deck as environmental reservoir of Fusarium.

While investigations on fungal contamination of swimming pools usually focus on dermatophytes, data on other potentially pathogenic molds are scarce. Here, we report the investigation of fungal colonization of the deck surrounding a hospital physical therapy swimming pool. Five series of samples from 8 sites were collected over one year from the pool surroundings. Concomitantly, 58 patients using the swimming pool were examined and samples obtained from those with suspected onychomycosis. All surface samples were positive for fungi, with Fusarium the most frequently recovered from 22 of 27 sam…

Rotational swimming tendencies in the dolphin (Tursiops truncatus).

Anecdotal evidence suggests that dolphins placed in a pool exhibit stereotypic swimming in circles. The present study confirmed these observations in a sample of thirteen dolphins. The majority of dolphins (84.6%) showed highly consistent directional swimming in counterclockwise circles. The latter directionality held throughout the circadian cycle and resisted environmental manipulations. Only social interaction was capable of altering the directionality of circumnavigation. The consistency of unidirectional swimming is considered paradoxical in view of the existing evidence regarding the alt…
