Histopathological examination of chemo-sympathectomy in cats.

In recent decades, there has been an increase in both the number of sympathectomy techniques, as well as the surgical findings of sympathetic anatomy. Currently the advanced technique of C-arm guided percutaneous thoracic chemo-sympathectomy is widely used for the treatment of palmar hyperhidrosis. However, a better understanding of chemical agents in sympathectomy is required. In this study, chemo-sympathectomy was performed in cats, using alcohol, glycerol and various concentrations of phenol, to determine the chronic neurotoxic effects of these chemical agents on the stellate ganglia. The s…

Sympathectomy for causalgia: experience with military injuries.

BACKGROUND: Causalgia is a rare disease in civilian practice, and most reports regarding causalgia in the literature are from major extended … atients had no response to the blocks (11%). Of 45 patients who had temporary relief, all underwent sympathectomy. All of these patients had complete relief of symptoms in the immediate postoperative period and for follow-up from 1 to 6 years. CONCLUSION: Causalgia is essentially a war casualty disease. The condition is associated with burning pain, hyperesthe …

The effect of cervical sympathectomy on cochlear electrophysiology.

The purpose of this study was to examine the electrophysiologic responses to sound from guinea pig cochleas, 3--6 days after a unilateral cervical sympathectomy. After recovery from surgery the guinea pigs developed a Horner's syndrome on the sympathectomized side. Some days later their bullas were opened and electrodes were placed bilaterally on the round windows. Most of the sympathectomized cochleas showed signs of decreased sensitivity to sound. They had a smaller dynamic range for the click- and tone-burst evoked compound action potential (CAP) compared with the non-sympathectomized cochl…

[Surgical indications and results of thoracic sympathectomy].

Between the 1st of July 1971 and the 31st of December 1974, among 1,459 operations on vascular surgery, we carried out 77 thoracic sympathectomies in 46 patients. In most patients there was an oblitering angiopathie of digital type, stage II to IV, confirmed by angiography. Two patients had mixed type obstructions, two others had hyperhidrosis, one patient suffered from cleroderma, another had a thoracic outlet syndrome with digital arterial obstruction. In all cases, the transaxillary approach was that which caused the least complications and which permitted satisfactory exposure of the sympa

Video-assisted thoracoscopic sympathectomy for Harlequin syndrome.

Harlequin syndrome is an exceedingly rare condition, characterized by unilateral facial flushing and hyperhidrosis. Postulated to be dysregulated sympathetic nervous system stimulation of the dermal vasculature and blood vessels of the face. There is no clear unifying pathological cause. Due to its heterogeneity and rarity, very little is known about the treatment of it. Hereafter, we describe our experience in successfully curing right-sided Harlequin syndrome through video-assisted thoracoscopic sympathectomy.

Objective evaluation of plantar hyperhidrosis after sympathectomy.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to prospectively, randomly, blindly, and objectively investigate how surgery affects plantar sudoresis in patients with palmar and plantar hyperhidrosis over a one-year period using a sudorometer (VapoMeter). METHODS: From February 2007 to May 2009, 40 consecutive patients with combined palmar hyperhidrosis and plantar hyperhidrosis underwent video-assisted thoracic sympathectomy at the T3 or T4 ganglion level (15 women and 25 men, with a mean age of 25 years). RESULTS: Immediately after the operation and during the one-year follow-up, all of the p…

Predictors of outcome following endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS) provides definitive management for primary focal hyperhidrosis and facial blushing. These conditions are debilitating and not uncommon, but many clinicians avoid ETS due to the risk of complications, particularly compensatory sweating (CS). This retrospective cohort study aimed to evaluate the degree of symptom resolution, patient satisfaction and adverse reactions after ETS and to identify subgroups of patients more likely to achieve a satisfactory outcome. METHODS: From 2004 to 2010, 210 patients underwent ETS performed by a single surgeon…

[Irreversible Horner's syndrome after bilateral thoracoscopic sympathectomy].

CASE REPORT: A 19 year-old boy who developed a right Horner's syndrome after a bilateral sympathectomy as a treatment for palmoplantar hyperhidrosis. DISCUSSION: Horner's syndrome is defined by the occurrence of miosis, ptosis and enophthalmos as a result of involvement of sympathetic innervation. This is quite rare, but identification is very important because it may also be an ominous sign secondary to a neoplasm, neurological diseases, or surgery of the sympathetic chain, as in our case.

Thoracoscopic Sympathicotomy vs Sympathectomy in Primary Hyperhidrosis.

BACKGROUND: Primary hyperhidrosis (P.H.H.) is characterized by excessive sweating in certain parts of body. It's estimated prevalence is 0%-6.1% in different populations. In Asian population its prevalence is around 3%. In 57% of cases, there is a positive family history. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate and compare the early and late satisfaction, outcomes and complications of thoracoscopic sympathectomy and sympathicotomy in the treatment of primary hyperhidrosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From April 2007 to January 2011, we prospectively treated 60 primary hyperhidrosis patients via thoracoscopic sur…

Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy for long QT syndrome.

BACKGROUND: A 54-year-old woman was referred to our service with intractable ventricular arrhythmias secondary to a familial long-QT syndrom … ing significant amount of distress. RESULTS: She underwent a left transthoracic endoscopic cardiac sympathectomy and made a good postoperative recovery. She remains asymptomatic at four months. CONCLUSION: Though open sympathectomy is an established treatment, there are only isolated reports of thoracoscopic sympathetic cardiac denervation in the literature.

Needlescopic thoracic sympathectomy: treatment for palmar hyperhidrosis.

BACKGROUND: Open thoracic sympathectomy has been the established option for patients with essential hyperhidrosis. Recently, video-assisted endoscopic sympathectomy has provided a simple, safe, reliable, and cost-effective alternative to the earlier technique. With advances in instrumentation, performing the procedure through 2-mm and 3-mm needlescopic ports is now possible. The authors evaluate the effectiveness of so-called needlescopic thoracic sympathectomy for the treatment of primary hyperhidrosis. METHODS: Thirty five consecutive patients with a mean age of 24 years, including 23 men a…

[Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy for isolated axillary hyperhidrosis].

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy is accepted as the treatment of choice for palmar hyperhidrosis. But the interest and the results of endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy for isolated axillary hyperhidrosis are still discussed. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a series of 435 patients operated on for hyperhidrosis of the upper limbs during the 5 past years, 23 were suffering from isolated axillary hyperhidrosis (5.2 p. 100). All patients had been previously treated by local agents and 3 had iontophoresis. All patients underwent a bilateral endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy that was performe…
