Taeniasis is very common all over the world and invades the upper small bowel in humans. It is very unusual to see this parasite in the stomach. We report a case of gastric taeniasis that led to granulomatous gastritis. The elimination of the parasite resulted in complete disappearance of the granulomas in the corpus and antrum and in complete recovery of the patient.

This Memorandum discusses the epidemiology of taeniasis-cysticercosis, particularly the survival of taeniid eggs in nature, and goes on to consider diagnostic procedures (parasitological and serological), resistance to infection, pathogenesis and clinical pathology, chemotherapy, and the economic and social consequences of infection. Topics requiring further research are listed, and recommendations are made concerning the approach to the problem.

Taeniasis is one of the major food-borne parasitic zoonoses in Thailand. During the years 1957-1997, the prevalence was low in most parts of the country. Recent (2000-2005) country prevalence was lower than 1%. A high prevalence (5.9%) was found among 1450 villagers from 30 villages in the North, and among 1233 stool samples from 19 provinces in the Northeast (2.8%). The aim of the epidemiological analysis was to detect the distribution and changes in the incidence of Taenia saginata and to find the relations between taeniosis and cysticercosis in the district of Halle (Saale). The morbidity rate of taeniosis was calculated at first by the number of notified cases and also by the quantity of anthelmintics in the treatment of T. saginata infections in humans. We present a review of the biological aspects of taeniasis-cysticercosis binomial, emphasizing those related to its biotic potential, resistance, and viability of eggs in the environment, as well as the morphological features of the corresponding adults, which are instrumental for the diagnosis of taeniasis. A new infection mechanism through the ingestion of posoncospheres present in macerated meat is discussed. The significance of unifying epidemiological criteria to control this important binomial is pointed out.

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the prevalence rate of Taenia spp. infection and distribution of taeniasis caused by T. solium among Koreans in several localities in Korea during the period from 1977 to 1980.
